Looters taking advantage of B.C. fires are typical at natural disaster
via vancouversun.com
As if the risk of losing their homes isn’t enough, wildfire evacuees in British Columbia have faced the additional threat of looters searching through their belongings after they rushed to safety.
Rob Gordon, a criminologist at Simon Fraser University in Surrey, says looting is an unfortunate but routine part of virtually every natural disaster, from fires to floods, hurricanes to earthquakes.
“It’s predatory behaviour of the worst kind,” Gordon said, adding that looters -
Girl falls five storeys from Richmond highrise, survives

The RCMP said a young girl’s fall from the seventh floor of a Richmond highrise building is under investigation.
The child plummeted about 17 metres onto a second-floor gravel-topped canopy on Wednesday and escaped without life-threatening injuries.
A family living on the second floor discovered the girl, believed to be less than six-years-old, after hearing her hit the canopy.
The investigation into what happened is still in the early stages and it’s unclear how the girl fell. -

via vancouversun.com
SIDNEY — A birder and wildlife photographer who’s been documenting the strange case of a baby red-tailed hawk being raised by eagles says the adopted little bird is acting like its eagle “siblings” and devouring fish.
Terry Venables said while red-tailed hawks aren’t known to be fish eaters, this baby hawk likes its fish and is thriving under the care of his much larger parents, who seem to be lavishing attention on the bird to which they’d normally be natural -

Summer a time for wine fun and refreshment
via vancouversun.com
Summer has always been a fleeting experience on the West Coast, which is why we need to embrace it as quickly as possible before it’s gone.
Instinctively we stash our sweaters and rain jackets for shorts and sunscreen, but when it comes to wine we seem reluctant to jettison the Cabernets and Chardonnays for something just a little lighter and fresher. Today we look at some summer classics built more for refreshment and fun than contemplation.
We begin with a Portuguese classic: Vinho Verde -

Lumber prices see 'big jump' after wildfires in British Columbia
via vancouversun.com
VANCOUVER — The wildfires in the B.C. Interior that have forced some sawmills to halt operations have resulted in a boost in lumber prices at a time when forestry companies have been squeezed by softwood duties on exports to the U.S.
By Wednesday, the benchmark price of Western spruce-pine-fir lumber had risen by 5.5 per cent to US$400 per thousand board feet from US$379 last Friday, according to figures from Random Lengths, which tracks lumber and panel prices.
