Notorious slumlords the Sahota family, whose dilapidated Balmoral Hotel was evacuated last month, are fighting to operate a dispensary near an elementary school.
Herban Legends, at 3038 Arbutus St., seeks to sell cannabis 260 metres from York House School, against regulations that require all dispensaries to be at least 300 metres from schools.
On Wednesday at 4 p.m., Herban Legends has an appeal hearing with the city’s board of variance to try to continue operating at 3038 Arbutus.

Taxing the rich is Seattle's plan for preserving affordability
via vancouversun.com
Amid the mansions of tech billionaires and millionaires, the luxury stores and upscale eateries, Seattle is having an existential crisis.
There’s a deepening wealth gap and housing costs are soaring beyond the reach of many working people, including software engineers whose salaries average $120,000 a year (and those are U.S. dollars). And the question that’s being asked is: Is this a city only for the wealthy?
Sound familiar? Well, yes. But the solution that Seattle’s city cou -
B.C. wildfires’ impact on animals ‘to be horrific’: wildlife rehab facility

“It’s going to be horrific,” Angelika Langen, co-founder of non-profit Northern Lights Wildlife Society in Smithers, said in an interview Wednesday.
“We’re expecting a storm in the aftermath of the fires. It’s pretty horrible for the wildlife with this huge area affected. It’s all over. It’s going to have an impact on numbers. -
Lions middle linebacker still on top of his game
via vancouversun.com
He would have been awfully thick to have missed it, but when the B.C. Lions lined up for their first game of this CFL season, Solomon Elimimian was aware things had changed dramatically in his work environment.
Adam Bighill, his teammate of six years and alter ego at linebacker, was gone. Ryan Phillips, the COO of the secondary and an 11-year vet, was gone. There were, however, five new starters, including a safety, Louchiez Purifoy, who was a linebacker last year and a linebacker, Chandler Fenn -

via vancouversun.com
In what appears to the first evidence of the Trump brand profiting from Donald Trump’s presidency, freedom-of-information documents show that the U.S. State Department spent more than US$15,000 to book 19 rooms at the Trump Vancouver hotel in February during the grand-opening festivities.
The highly redacted documents were obtained by the Washington Post and reported Wednesday.
For the hotel’s grand opening on Feb. 28, Trump’s two sons Donald Jr. and Eric, his daughter Tiffany, -

Wildfire smoke blankets much of British Columbia, part of Alberta
via vancouversun.com

The bulletin is issued when smoke concentrations in an area could -

Slowly, steadily, tacos threaten to trounce sushi as the West Coast food mascot. The density of taco shops and tacos on casual menus are reaching epic or sushi proportions thanks to their price and user-friendly nature. Shops like Tacofino (with three popular locations and a couple of food trucks), La Taqueria Pinche (another three) and Sal y Limon certainly contributed to our taco love.

Indigenous consent is key to sustainable development

On June 30, the Trudeau government quietly released its highly anticipated approach to revamping the federal environmental assessment process. Expectations were high following the recommendations of the government-appointed expert panel. Sadly, the Liberal government opted for the status quo over innovative change.

HARRISON MOONEY: It’s ice cream season in Vancouver, otherwise known as summer. The heat is on, which means it’s time to find strategies to beat it, and you’d be hard-pressed to find a better one — or, at least, a more delicious one — than an ice cream cone.
Don’t give me any guff about ice cream in a cup, by the way. The only acceptable way to eat ice cream is scooped onto a cone, waffle wherever possible, and I will fight anyone who disagrees. Now, gran -

Outside, in the middle of a basketball court, members of the Secwepemc Health Caucus and the Tk’emlúps First Nation attended to people’s spiritual needs with a water ceremony.
At centre court, a blanket was spread out and on top lay drums, braids of sweetgrass, a bag of sage, eagle feathers and a smudging bowl with an a -

via vancouversun.com
WILLIAMS LAKE — The only thing that stopped Logan Piesse from leaving Rocky Mountain House in Alberta early Sunday morning to help out with the B.C. wildfires was a tornado warning.
When it cleared later that day, he began the 12-hour drive to Prince George.
Piesse towed a six-horse trailer, arriving Monday morning at the Prince George Exhibition Grounds, where he was immediately sent south to the City of Williams Lake — which is now under evacuation alert — to pick -

Vaughn Palmer: Greens' craving for electoral reform easier said than done
via vancouversun.com
VICTORIA — No political priority looms larger for the B.C. Greens than reforming the electoral system to establish proportional representation and improve their chances of winning seats in the legislature.
The commitment is foremost in the power-sharing agreement they struck with the New Democrats for obvious reasons.
In May, the Greens won 17 per cent of the vote but only three seats. With a system that allocated representation in proportion to the share of the vote, they would have -
UBC forest researcher posts video of harrowing wildfire escape

After filming her harrowing escape from the B.C. wildfires, a Vancouver forestry researcher worries that with ongoing climate change such devastation is now “the new normal” for the province.
Dr. Sally Aitken, associate dean for research and innovation at the University of B.C.’s Department of Forest and Conservation Sciences, said a two-week vacation to her recreational property in the west Chilcotin region was cut short Monday when smoke nearby grew and she and her -

B.C. wildfires put dent in interior resource industries
via vancouversun.com
Logging contractor John McNeil’s crews have been double-shifting since late last week, when they can, cutting fire breaks around the mills and northeast boundary of 100 Mile House, instead of stacking up timber for his employer.
“The big thing is to save those two big sawmills, because that’s what our town is,” McNeil said, “and to save the homes in the area, and that’s what the effort has been concentrated on.”

Caws for celebration: Canuck the Crow lands a paying gig at PNE
via vancouversun.com
IT specialists probably think they’ve heard it all, but Loredana Udovicic has a new one for them: The crow stole my keyboard.
Well, not the entire keyboard, but the manager of food and beverage at the Pacific National Exhibition has had to repeatedly ask her IT department for a replacement keyboard after Canuck the Crow flew through an open window into her office and made off with one of the keys.
“IT is upset with me, I’ve lost three keyboards and they don’t believe me w -
