via vancouversun.com
A mining company in northeast B.C. has received a provincial enforcement order to stop moving coal by truck instead of rail, a violation of its environmental certificate.
The problem is that there is not currently an active rail line to Tumbler Ridge.
Environmental Assessment Office documents show that a public complaint prompted an investigation into the transport of coal by Conuma Coal Resources Ltd. from its Wolverine coal mine near Tumbler Ridge.

History tends to repeat itself.
No one knows that better than my colleague John Mackie, who has been writing the “This Week in History” feature for some time. So when he took a couple weeks off and left me with instructions to fill in, I knew it would be a challenge to find something he hadn’t already written about.

“Little,” as she was known on the streets of Newton, stood just over five feet tall and weighed only 110 pounds, her dark brown eyes always framed by thick glasses to correct her poor vision.

Vancouver Island brothers ‘just having fun’ draw Mountie tactical team

Reports of two men in camouflage gear carrying what looked to be high-powered rifles led an RCMP helicopter, a tactical team, a canine team and several Mounties to surround a rural property south of Nanaimo on Wednesday night.
Once two brothers realized they might have attracted the heavy police presence, they walked over to the police blockade — without their guns — and told the officers they were playing an army game with non-lethal airsoft guns.
It started when Karl and Tylor Lofs -

Daphne Bramham: Can a charm offensive buy the Canadian navy support?
via vancouversun.com
The Royal Canadian Navy is on a charm offensive. It’s come after the Liberal government’s plans to increase defence spending by 73 per cent to $62-billion over the next decade.
Before the 2016 federal budget, Canadians were asked for their 15 top picks for where their money should be spent. Health care was first and defence spending was 14th, with only five per cent support.
Canadians may love the idea of peacekeepers, but are less keen on combat troops. Since the Second World War, C -

Readers react to Khadr's $10.5-million payout
via vancouversun.com
Re: Trudeau Liberals to pay Omar Khadr $10.5M for suffering at Guantanamo, July 4.
Is Canada so flush that the government can afford to throw around millions of taxpayers’ money? Canada had nothing to do with Omar Khadr’s conviction and incarceration. He was tried and found guilty of murder in a foreign court. And now our bleeding-heart government has made him a hero, deserving of apology and wealth.
Is it becoming a trend to make lawbreakers rich by our Liberal government in the nam -

Social media spurs risky behaviour in Lynn Canyon, North Shore slopes
via vancouversun.com
Rescuers fear warm weather and a thirst for recognition on social media is driving young adventurers to take dangerous risks by heading woefully unprepared into the North Shore mountains.
On Instagram, Facebook and Snapchat accounts, these adventurers post photos and video of yoga poses beneath waterfalls, hikes to Quarry Rock and cliff jumping in Lynn Canyon, but fail to warn of the risks involved in seeking such picturesque views.

Royal Canadian Navy's charm offensive aimed at buying public support
via vancouversun.com
The Royal Canadian Navy is on a charm offensive. It’s come after the Liberal government’s plans to slash defence spending by 73 per cent to $62-billion over the next decade.
Before the 2016 federal budget, Canadians were asked for their 15 top picks for where their money should be spent. Health care was first and defence spending was 14th, with only five per cent support.
Canadians may love the idea of peacekeepers, but are less keen on combat troops. Since the Second World War, Cana -
