What do you do when you get sued by “God” on behalf of all “Indians & Muslims”?
If you are the provincial government and City of Prince Rupert, you engage lawyers, they’ll book flights to the rainy northwest coast and the expensive machinery of the courts churns.
James Sterritt, who styles himself as “God,” didn’t show up for the hearing, but he listened by phone when B.C. Supreme Court Justice Robert Punnett issued a ruling tossing out hi

Vancouver police say Canada Day crowds were eh-OK
via vancouversun.com
Vancouver police say the large crowd who visited downtown Saturday during Canada Day festivities were very well behaved.
Despite a peak crowd estimated at 350,000 to 400,000 people, there were just three arrests for bad behaviour, and only 80 liquor pour-outs.
“The crowds were patient and generally well-behaved,” Const. Jason Doucette said in a statement. “I guess you could say they were very Canadian.”

Harrison Lake fire not yet under control
via vancouversun.com
Crews continue to battle a large forest fire on the edge of Harrison Lake that blanketed the popular recreational area in smoke over the holiday weekend.
The fire flared up Saturday near mouth of Big Silver Creek —about 30 kilometres north of Harrison Hot Springs —and by Sunday it had grown to 60 hectares. Fire officials believe the fire was sparked by humans, but the exact cause is not yet known, said Marg Drysdale, with the Coastal Fire Centre.

A quiet Maple Ridge neighbourhood got a fiery start to Sunday morning.
Firefighters were called to a house fire at 207th Street and Lorne Avenue around 7 a.m.

The cause of the blaze was undetermined, firefighters at the scene told Postmedia News.
The cause of the fire is under investigation and no one was believed to in the house at the time.

A $6 Compass card is apparently worth ten times as much, some Metro Vancouverites are guessing.
TransLink printed 20,000 special Canada 150-themed Compass cards ahead of this year’s Canada Day; the $6 cards sold out pretty quick.
Some purchasers now appear to be looking to flip the cards for $50 or $60 on sites like Craigslist and eBay.

Jason Botchford: Canucks' power play gets a jolt with addition of Sam Gagner
via vancouversun.com
Don’t call him the power-play saviour.
Heck, a year ago, there was doubt whether you could still call Sam Gagner an NHLer.
Back then, he waited until August before the Columbus Blue Jackets kept him in the league with a one-year, $650,000 contract.
My, how things have changed.
The Vancouver Canucks scooped Gagner on the first day of free agency and the $9.45 million offer he accepted wasn’t the only three-year deal he had on the table.
“Last year was a tough summer,” Gagn -
Keyboard Kimura: UFC 2017 first-half awards

How in the name of all things good and right in the world is it already July? It feels like just yesterday we were whining about the gloomy days of spring, longing for the sunshine and warmth and now here we are, smack dab in the middle of “complaining about the heat” season.
One of the good things about already reaching the midway point of the year is that it provides a chance to look back on the first six months and pick out some of the highlights as we prepare for what should be a -
Ed Willes: Buono's boasts of bigger, faster, better finally show up on defence
via vancouversun.com
KINGSTON — There were a couple of takeaways from the B.C. Lions’ gritty, imperfect win over the Toronto Argos on Friday night.
First, it should be clear by now that the Lions’ odds of winning improve exponentially when they keep Jonathon Jennings upright and in one piece.
Second, as long as Ty Long is handling the kicking chores, best to dispense with the directional-punting strategy and let the kid air it out.
Third — and here’s the big one — for the last mon -

He had been an inmate at the Pacific Institution, acting assistant warden Ronnie Gill said.
Giles had been ill throughout his trial in B.C. Supreme Court for conspiracy to import and traffic cocaine.

Saluting Canada Day 150 by crushing the Rock in flying colours

WHITE ROCK — Last year I “surprised” the wife, an extremely reluctant runner who detests setting a weekend alarm, with a his-and-her entry for the SFN Canada Day Rock 5K.
