Daily Poll: What should premier-designate John Horgan work on first?
via vancouversun.com
Now that B.C. NDP Leader John Horgan has been asked to form government and become the next premier, it’s time to get down to work.
The NDP and Green parties came to a power-sharing agreement soon after the election left B.C. in a state of political uncertainty, highlighting a number of issues to be worked on.
Among those issues are things such as the multi-billion dollar Site C dam, proportional representation, electoral finance, porverty reduction and the ongoing opioid crisis. Some issue -

Makeover: Looking for versatile and functional
via vancouversun.com
Jinnell Gunn recently lost over 50 pounds and wanted to see how a stylist would dress her body.
Jinnell describes her style to be easy going and casual. Her usual attire at work is jeans, T-shirts and athletic wear, as there is no strict dress code. She was hoping for a new pair of jeans and a wardrobe that she could work for social outings. My goal was to pull together a wardrobe that is versatile and functional, while showing off her new fit and slender frame.

The Home Front: Dressing up your digs for Canada's 150th
via vancouversun.com
For the patriotic — and for those who appreciate home decor — a number of Canadian companies have come out with new products in celebration of Canada’s 150th birthday. They balance style and pride, as well as practicality, given that they’re designed to last, and be loved, well past today.
Here’s a look at some of the goods on offer.
When it comes to iconic Canadian brands, it’s hard to beat the Hudson’s Bay Company. So when they approached Toronto&rsquo -
Aquilini touts value at Pelican Cove in Tsawwassen

With homes starting at under $600,000 in an established, master-planned community, the people behind Pelican Cove in Tsawwassen are confident about the value of their offering: 42 townhomes and 20 duplexes at Tsawwassen Shores.
“I think the value and the quality of the homes is unprecedented,” said Kevin Hoffman, president of Aquilini, the developers of the project. “I would challenge anyone to find a better deal in the market. We’re only 25 minutes drive into Vancouver, -

via vancouversun.com
Suggested dek: Arts and Crafts home one of 13 showcased in HGTV show that commemorates Canada’s 150th through our architecture and design
It was love at first site for Murray and Val Nunns. A Calgary businessman, former geologist and self -proclaimed “serial restorer,” Murray Nunns saw the Disher House online when the couple was on holiday in Maui in 2006.
He immediately put in an offer, then flew to Vancouver to inspect the 1912 granite Arts and Crafts heritage hom -
Creekside Estates geared to the 'move-down buyer'
via vancouversun.com
When Ignacio Lara-Faure, owner and lead architectural designer for Cutstone Home Designs, was creating his vision for Creekside Estates in Hope, he turned to the iconic Frank Lloyd Wright’s famous Prairie style for inspiration.
While Lara-Faure says he couldn’t use the flat roofs often associated with that architecture because of the area’s snow and rainfall, he believes the designs for the 30-home subdivision on Flood Hope Road present a unique and modern take on the style.

Opinion: Railroads are the foundation of modern-day Canada
via vancouversun.com
Across our great nation today, Canadians will celebrate our country’s 150th anniversary of confederation.
There are events and activities planned to commemorate this historic day from coast to coast, and CN is proud to be part of this year’s Canada 150 celebrations in communities across the country. Last month, CN hosted a special Fathers of Confederation train trip between Montreal and Ottawa as we welcomed mayors from across Canada to the annual meeting of the Federation of Canadia -
Letters: Critical heart care is great, but chronic cardiac conditions underfunded
via vancouversun.com
Re: I’m In Trouble: A Harrowing Story From The Heart, June 24
Jamie Lamb’s personal account highlights the excellent care the B.C. health system provides cardiac patients whose lives are threatened. But what about non-threatening cardiac care?
Atrial fibrillation, an irregular heartbeat and a non-life-threatening condition, affects about 44,000 people in B.C. When the disease progresses to persistent, an irregular heartbeat lasting more than seven days, our health system is slow in p -
Ian Mulgrew: Millennial Métis thug a victim of colonialism?
via vancouversun.com
Blame the fallout of colonialism for a chronic, violent Métis offender with a metre-long record who must be watched “at every moment” by the RCMP.
In a decision that is bound to spark controversy, B.C.’s top court has interpreted compassionate principles intended for First Nations offenders to be a veritable automatic sentence reduction.
It maintained society must share some of the blame for a longtime Kamloops offender, a habitual criminal who does not have official M&e -
Canada 150's legacy? Reconciling Canada's past with our shared future
via vancouversun.com
Tom Taylor killed Poor Jane by taking her to that terrible country. That country was Canada. Poor Jane was my great-grandmother. And that first sentence was spoken to me almost 30 years ago, within moments of my introduction to Welsh relatives.
Jane died at age 48, three days before Christmas 1909. She arrived in Canada barely three years earlier with her five children, who ranged in age from 22 to eight (my grandmother).
Tom — my great-grandfather — was a saddle maker in England, a -
Canada 150: Sir John A. Macdonald, the first Prime Minister from B.C.
via vancouversun.com
To mark Canada’s 150th birthday, we are counting down to Canada Day with profiles of 150 noteworthy British Columbians.
On Sept. 17, 1878, Sir John A. MacDonald was defeated in his bid for re-election in Kingston, Ont.
But he was still able to claim a seat in parliament, and become prime minister, because he was elected in two ridings out west, Marquette in Manitoba and Victoria, B.C.
What makes this even weirder is that the so-called “Father of Confederation” had never be -
Opinion: To know Canada, visit our fascinating national archive online
via vancouversun.com
So now our imperfect and yet, on the whole, relatively lucky country is 150 years old. Was that a sufficiently measured observation? I wouldn’t want to seem boastful, certainly not in these days of post-colonial comeuppance. But we’ve made it this far nonetheless — still intact, still a vast land mass with a not-too-large population.
Are we having fun, though, during this sesquicentennial year? Out here on the Pacific Rim, we’re about as removed from Ottawa&rsqu -
Editorial: Despite our problems, we're very blessed to live in Canada
via vancouversun.com
It’s easy, if one follows the news, to become overly burdened by the problems in our society. It’s practically an occupational hazard for journalists, who daily must focus on potentially depressing issues such as crime, homelessness, housing affordability, poverty, political disputes, drug abuse, environmental fears, Canada’s damaged relationship with First Nations … the list is long.
But with Canadians celebrating our nation’s 150th birthday today, it’s a go -
B.C. Parks licence plates raise $500,000 for park enhancement fund
via vancouversun.com
A portion of the sale price of these special licence plates goes to fund B.C. Parks. Sales have exceeded expectations and $500,000 has already been raised, says ICBC. This Kermode bear design has proved the most popular.
It was expected to take five years, but it only took five months to sell 37,000 commemorative B.C. Parks licence plates, raising hundreds of thousands of dollars for a park enhancement fund.
The B.C. government launched the licence plates on Jan. 29. According to ICBC -

That’s why they’ve whipped up a crowdfunding campaign to raise $25,000 toward buying a U.K. first edition of Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone when it goes to auction in London on July 20.
“If we don’t act now we’ll miss our opportunity to have this book as part of our collection,” s -

via vancouversun.com
The B.C. Court of Appeal set the stage Friday for Phillip James Tallio, who has spent the last 34 years in prison for killing a child, to appeal his 1983 murder conviction.
If Tallio’s appeal were to be successful, it would make Canadian legal history as the longest prison sentence served by someone found to be wrongly convicted.
Friday’s decision, which legal observers are already calling “historic,” allows the appeal to proceed.
The ruling hinged on the issue of DNA evi -
Canada 150 celebrations come a little early for B.C.
via vancouversun.com
Champagne corks may pop, artillery boom and Canada 150 party balloons waft above five eastern capitals, but out here on the wet, wild, western side of the Rocky Mountains, whatever celebrations may take place, the real birthday won’t come for another four years.
British Columbia wasn’t even part of Canada 150 years ago. And in 1867, if enthusiasm at the prospect of B.C. joining was mixed here, in newly minted Canada, several months’ travel away, it was downright tepid.

Growing up, Gloria Cranmer Webster never knew the story of how authorities raided a potlatch hosted by her father, Kwakwaka’wakw hereditary Chief Dan Cramner, at a remote village off of northern Vancouver Island, and seized a trove of some 600 traditional masks, rattles and other treasures.
That was in 1921, 10 years before she was born, and “no one ever talked about it,” Webster said in a phone interview from her home in Alert Bay.
Today, however, Webster’s work in helpi -
