Victoria police board bill tops $600,000 in case of former chief Frank Elsner
via vancouversun.com
The Victoria police board spent $602,444 on legal fees and two controversial investigations into former police chief Frank Elsner — a figure that does not include Elsner’s legal fees.
“I think the whole thing is a waste of tax dollars,” said Victoria Mayor Lisa Helps, co-chairwoman of the police board. “It’s been really expensive, it’s been really disruptive, but we’re beyond it. We’re taking fresh steps. We’ve got a new chief.”

via vancouversun.com
The B.C. Court of Appeal set the stage Friday for Phillip Tallio, who has spent the last 34 years in prison, to appeal his 1983 murder conviction.
Tallio was 17 years old in 1983 when he was arrested for the murder of a 22-month-old girl in a First Nations reserve in Bella Coola. Nine days into a jury trial, Tallio pleaded guilty to second-degree murder, which led to a sentence of life in prison with no chance of parole for 10 years. Ever since Tallio’s sentencing, he has maintained his in -

Town Talk: Canada's birthday keeps on giving
via vancouversun.com
Virtually “fresh off the boat,” as folk once said, columnist-to-be Malcolm Parry admired the Bridge River gorge to begin his first July 1 in Canada.
MANY HAPPY RETURNS: Waking on his first July 1 in Canada, the young man marvelled at B.C.’s Bridge River gorge rising to twice the height of mountains he’d known in Wales. Spiralling in its sun-warming vortex, hawks scanned the valley floor for breakfast. Fifteen weeks earlier, the young immigrant had done much the same by fl -
More than four people a day on average die in B.C. from illicit drugs: coroner
via vancouversun.com
VANCOUVER — More than four people a day on average died in British Columbia in May from illicit drugs, a death toll the coroner’s service says should serve as a warning to people who are not drug-dependent to avoid experimentation.
The service says provisional data show 129 persons died in May, down slightly from 136 who died in April.
It says until November 2016, there had never been as many as 100 drug deaths in the province for a single month, but in every month since then the num -

Brian Minter: Make your lawn more eco-friendly with micro clover
via vancouversun.com
Can our lawns be more environmentally friendly? Already they produce oxygen for us to breath, collect pollutants, sequester carbon, hold soils together, minimize dust and give us a soft place to walk, sit and connect with the outdoors. The answer is yes, we can tweak our lawns to be much more eco-friendly than they are now.
As lawn stewards, we need to employ better practices to manage invasive weeds by spot treating them with safer controls and over-seeding with grass blends that are more weed -

How Deep is the Lake — A Century at Chilliwack Lake
By Shelley O’Callaghan
(Caitlin Press, $24.95)How Deep is the Lake is a welcome surprise for a memoir-weary reviewer, and this well written, closely observed memoir is both a family album, a love letter to a stunning natural environment, an account of First Nations history, and the testimony to the author’s burgeoning awareness of the great Canadian land theft that made land on Chilliwack Lake available to her family.

Opinion: It’s time to end precarious work in B.C.’s hospitals
via vancouversun.com
Hospital cleaners are on the front-line of the battle against the hospital-acquired infections that put vulnerable patients at risk.
Similarly, dietary workers take great care to ensure that the nutritional content and consistency of meals is appropriate for the medical condition of patients.
These workers are essential for quality, safe patient care. But there is a dirty secret in many B.C.’s hospitals.
Government legislation and policies over 16 years have created a disposable workforce -

When Phillip James Tallio went to jail 34 years ago for killing a child in Bella Coola, he left behind the world he knew and everyone important to him — including one special person still a few months from being born.
The RCMP arrested Tallio, at age 17 in April 1983, for the murder of a 22-month-old girl in a remote First Nations community on B.C.’s central coast. At the time, Tallio and his 14-year-old girlfriend Theresa Hood had just found out she was pregnant with their child.

Vaughn Palmer: Horgan's next challenge begins now
via vancouversun.com
VICTORIA — After weeks of speculation, Lt-Gov. Judith Guichon acted decisively and simply Thursday to end 16 years of Liberal government in B.C. and invite the NDP back to office in an unusual partnership with the Greens.
The drama started in the legislature just before 5 p.m. as Premier Christy Clark delivered a last plea to defend her government record and save it from defeat. To no avail.
The New Democrats and Greens then combined forces to terminate the Liberal throne speech and the Li -
Opinion: Removing statue of Judge Begbie benefits no one
via vancouversun.com
I have been disturbed by the public discussion of the removal of the statue of Judge Begbie in New Westminster. While I’m not an authority on him, I am a historian and was, at one time, the curator of B.C. history at the Museum of Canadian History.
To remove this statue would be to deny both the positive and the negative sides of this important man in our history in B.C. As I’m sure you already know, Matthew Baillie Begbie was the person who brought law and order to the Colony of Bri -

B.C. premier-designate John Horgan now begins the challenging task of fulfilling key campaign promises to make B.C. better for workers and industry.
Irene Lanzinger, president of the B.C. Federation of Labour, said late Thursday that her federation looks forward to working with the B.C. NDP and Green party alliance, which she believes will work for workers across B.C.
“I’m excited to have a government that I think will be on the side of working people and families, I think it will be -
Vaughn Palmer: Site C passes all legal loopholes, but project still threatened
via vancouversun.com
VICTORIA — The news out of the highest court in the land Thursday was brief but fraught with implications for B.C. Hydro and the hydroelectric dam now under construction at Site C.
“Dismissed with costs,” ruled the Supreme Court of Canada in the first instance. “Dismissed with costs,” it ruled a second time.
In both cases, the high court denied applications for leave to appeal lower court rulings that were in favour of letting Site C proceed.
Both applications -

Opinion: Maintaining your customers' trust in your brand is critically important
via vancouversun.com
I was enjoying my cup of Irish Breakfast tea (no sugar, plenty of milk) one morning when I remembered the news about recently recalled milk. I quickly scoured the newspaper for the article about a recall of Natrel and Island Farms milk, due to the presence of unspecified “foreign material,” the vagueness of which sent my imagination into overdrive.
At the bottom, was a table showing the UPC codes of suspect milk. Squinting at the table, the milk carton and back again, I assured -
