Four people were taken to hospital and a horse was killed after a wagon crashed over a 40-foot embankment near Williams Lake on Tuesday.
The accident happened near Farwell Canyon during an eight-day wagon train from the Xeni Gwet’in First Nation to Williams Lake.
The horse-pulled wagon was carrying eight people when it lost control coming down a hill and went off the road, plunging and rolling approximately 40 feet down an embankment.

SALUT: Outdoor decor gets a Canadian twist
via vancouversun.com
Canada’s 150th birthday celebrations are sure to influence outdoor parties this year, from the types of food served to the style of decor.
But while dollar-store flags and red cups may suffice for some, there are ways to incorporate Canadiana to a backyard bash or patio party that are altogether more stylish.
“If you’re looking to style your home in celebration of Canada’s 150th birthday, focus on creating a heritage feel rather than purchasing novelty pieces -
B.C. Liberals tout $2.8B surplus, reduced debt on eve of expected defeat
via vancouversun.com
VICTORIA — British Columbia’s finance minister has painted a rosy picture of the province’s finances a day before his government is expected to be defeated in a confidence vote, saying a $2.8-billion surplus helped support a bevy of new promises in the Liberal throne speech.
The unaudited fiscal update released by Mike de Jong on Wednesday says the higher-than-expected surplus in the 2016-17 fiscal year helped reduce the province’s taxpayer-supported debt by $1.2 billion, -

SALUT: Think beyond cheddar when buying Canadian cheese
via vancouversun.com
Praise cheeses we live in Canada. Although it doesn’t have the centuries of tradition that France does, this country produces hundreds of cheeses including some of the best in the world.
Sure, there’s plenty of ordinary commercial cheese. But we also make fine cheese from cow, goat, sheep and even buffalo milk, in almost every province, and in almost every style.
More than 1,050 different cheeses are listed in the Canadian Cheese Directory that’s compiled by the Canadian Dairy -

Karen Barnaby: Easy, breezy Canada Day meal inspired by Expo 67
via vancouversun.com
It’s hard to express the magic I felt the year that Canada turned 100 years old. It wasn’t because Canada was a century old, it was everything that went along with Canada becoming that age.
School that year was a breeze. We rehearsed and performed plays, made scores of centennial symbols out of paper, went to track and field events, and sang songs. All the girls in my class — including me — were crushing heavily on Mr. Cook, our Grade 5 teacher, which made 1967 even bette -
Canada Day Long Weekend: Celebration cookout menu keeps it simple but stunning
via vancouversun.com
Canadians know one thing for sure: Summer is short and sweet, so we need to make the most of it while we can. And that means getting outside and firing up the grill whenever possible.
The weekend around Canada Day, set as it is bang in the middle of our too-short sunny season, is prime grilling time, whether you cook over gas, propane, charcoal or campfire; whether you go hot and fast or low and slow; whether you keep it casual with burgers or go gourmet with a whole glorious prime rib.

COLWOOD — A court has heard that the man who sped his truck through a red light and rammed an RCMP cruiser, killing the officer inside, had been drinking before the crash and was distraught over the recent suicide of a friend.
Crown attorney Tim Stokes told Kenneth Fenton’s sentencing hearing that the man’s truck was going between 76 and 90 kilometres an hour when it entered the intersection and crashed into Const. Sarah Beckett’s vehicle in April 2016.

Sea otter pup found swimming alone near Vancouver Island rescued
via vancouversun.com
A sea otter pup found swimming alone in open waters off of northern Vancouver Island is now receiving around-the-clock care at the Vancouver Aquarium’s rescue facility.
The pup is estimated to be between two to four weeks old and was spotted by passersby Sunday; it appears to be healthy but continues to require a high level of care due to its young age.

SALUT: Global movers and shakers in the B.C. wine industry
via vancouversun.com
One of the more appealing aspects of the wine business is global collaboration and exchange of information.
When I think about the thousands of wineries I’ve visited around the globe I am always amazed how open and honest winery folks are, and how generous they can be with sharing information.
The very best often say there are no secrets in wine, and after all these years I have come to think that philosophy usually leads to success.

Story of Vancouver Island red-tailed hawk’s bald eagle family winging its way around globe
via vancouversun.com
The story of a red-tailed hawk fostered by a family of bald eagles in Sidney is reaching beyond the world of bird watchers and wildlife biologists.
Rare migrant birds often attract enthusiastic hobbyists who will travel great distances to gain another checkmark on their life lists of species spotted.
But this hawk is different. It’s getting interest from around the world, including the BBC, and from those who normally don’t care about birds.

To mark Canada’s 150th birthday, we are counting down to Canada Day with profiles of 150 noteworthy British Columbians.
The McGeer family has been a fixture in Vancouver since the 1880s, when Irish immigrant James McGeer settled in Mt. Pleasant.
He was known as Big Jim, and had a personality to match his size — he was constantly in the papers arguing over politics.
He passed on his love of politics to his son Gerry, a fiery orator who was Vancouver’s mayor for several years dur -
B.C.'s official tree is a source of health problems for many in forestry industry
via vancouversun.com
They are a central part of Northwest Coast aboriginal culture, not to mention the construction industry and provincial economy, but western red cedar trees — B.C.’s official tree — also cause serious lung problems for those who inhale their dust on the job.
Hans Brezina, 57, knows this too well. The Mission-area man happily worked in the forestry industry for three decades, but had to give it up a few years ago because of serious asthma.
“I had a mild form of asthma when -
Letters: No one voted for an NDP-Green coalition, reader says
via vancouversun.com
Who says B.C. doesn’t want another election? Are those the same pollsters that said that Adrian Dix and the B.C. NDP were going to win big and form government in 2013? That’s funny, as election day results proved quite the opposite. Not only did the NDP not win, but they also suffered a huge loss.
In our last election, voters gave the Liberals the most seats to form government — no one voted for a back-door deal between the NDP and Green Party. As such, if the opposition partie -

“We are confident that we will be able to make this house work,” Farnworth told reporters after the B.C. Liberals again expressed doubt that the NDP-Green alliance could manage a one-seat majority.

Jason Botchford: If Miller 'Ducks' out, Canucks could have crease crisis
via vancouversun.com
Vancouver needs to start preparing for life without goaltender Ryan Miller.
Wanted but unsigned, Miller has already been discussing his options with other National Hockey League teams and increasingly insiders believe the start of free agency will mark the end of his career as a Canuck.
Maybe the Canucks have a final push in them, but the best guess lately has been Miller-to-Anaheim, a team with Stanley Cup aspirations in a city which meets Miller’s desire to stay close to his wife (Nouree -
