via vancouversun.com
After decades of lagging other developed nations and decades of lobbying, Canadians may finally get universal access to good-quality and affordable childcare.
At long last, the political resistance to accessible and affordable early childhood education programs across the country appears to have been overwhelmed with all of the evidence that indicates the investment is good for the economy as well as the long-term health, wealth and happiness of the children who receive it.

via vancouversun.com
To mark Canada’s 150th birthday, we are counting down to Canada Day with profiles of 150 noteworthy British Columbians.
Tong Louie isn’t as well-known as B.C. business legends such as Jim Pattison or H.R. MacMillan. But he probably should be — his family company, H.Y. Louie, is one of the great B.C. business success stories.
It was Tong Louie who brought IGA to B.C. in the 1950s. In 1976, he purchased London Drugs, the retail giant. And he built the H.Y. Louie company from a re -

A B.C. Court of Appeal justice has lifted most of a publication ban on Phillip Tallio’s attempt to appeal his second-degree murder conviction.
Tallio pleaded guilty in 1983 to the murder of Delavina Lynn Mack, in Bella Coola, but as Postmedia News reported last month in a series of stories, he has maintained his innocence ever since he was sentenced to prison in early 1984.
Mack’s name, along with several volumes of documents, can now be reported publicly as a result of B.C. Court of -

Phillip James Tallio was arrested and charged in 1983 with the murder of a 22-month-old girl on a First Nations reserve near Bella Coola. Tallio, who was 17 at the time, initially pleaded not guilty to first-degree murder, but nine days into a jury trial he pleaded guilty to second-degree murder, which brought a sentence of life i -

Opinion: Vancouver’s Chinatown and redrawing the lines in the 'City of Optimists'
via vancouversun.com
In the reverberations following the 105 Keefer St. rezoning rejection, the hearings lay bare the painful realities of city life in Vancouver. Amongst the gleaming towers and $6 lattes, life for many Vancouverites is increasingly vicious, indifferent and cruel. The public hearing became a sign of the growing frustrations and shortcomings of civic governance.
However, 105 Keefer offers lessons from which a person could even develop a sense of optimism.
What can be learned?

Lt.-Gov. Guichon faces decision with few precedents assuming Liberals fall
via vancouversun.com
There is probably little in Lt.-Gov. Judith Guichon’s past as a rancher and advocate for conservation that would have prepared her for being thrust into the fulcrum of Canadian constitutional democracy, but there are few precedents for the position she is in.
Guichon left the ranges of her family’s historic ranch in the Nicola Valley near Merritt just before roundup in 2012 to take over the mostly ceremonial viceregal position from her predecessor, Steven Point, a Sto:lo First Nation -

The Legal Services Society of B.C. will stop paying lawyers to represent refugees as of Aug. 1 because it has run out of money and has not received promised funding from Ottawa to deal with the fallout from a global humanitarian crisis.
The non-profit legal aid organization handled 860 refugee contracts in 2016-17, compared to 350 in 2013-14, and it expects to accept around 1,400 of 1,900 applications this year.

Kelowna jury ponders sucker punch or self-defence?

KELOWNA — Was it a sucker punch or self-defence? It all comes down to that question in the trial of Cory Van Gilder, a Kelowna man charged with manslaughter in the February 2016 death of 30-year-old Zachary Gaudette.
“This is essentially a sucker punch,” said Crown counsel Andrew Vandersluys in his final submission Monday to the eight-man, four-woman jury in courtroom No. 3 at the Kelowna Law Courts.
“Mr. Van Gilder was not justified in punching Mr. Gaudette. It was an un -
