via vancouversun.com
VICTORIA — B.C.’s Liberal government tried to use its dying days to ban union and corporate donations with the co-operation of the same opposition parties that later this week will likely topple the government with a non-confidence vote.
But any hopes for passage were short-lived, after the NDP and Green combined to kill the bill on its first reading.
Green leader Andrew Weaver said while he might support the idea, he can’t vote in favour of a Liberal government that has yet to -

“It’s so bad down there yesterday that people were begging me to try and get it back,” Erin Schulte said on Monday morning.

Angus Reid started off his professional life as a sociology professor at the University of Manitoba.
But he didn’t last long. Academia was too slow for Reid, whose entrepreneurial knack and a passion for politics led him to take a leave of absence from the university to start a polling firm in 1979.
CanWest Survey Research Group’s first headquarters were above a 7-Eleven in Winnipeg. Reid would research topics on spec, then try to sell the results to corporate clients.

Opinion: Medical schools can solve Canada's rural doctor shortage
via vancouversun.com
Timely medical care is all too rare for many Canadians.
Fewer than half can get a same-day or next-day appointment with their family doctor, according to a recent report from the Canadian Institute of Health Information. Fifty-six per cent of Canadians have to wait more than a month to see a specialist.
These statistics are a bracing reminder of the nation’s growing shortage of physicians, especially primary care doctors. More than 4.5 million Canadians lack a regular -
Opinion: Let's have a level-headed discussion on immigration
via vancouversun.com
Economists have not reached a consensus on whether the solution to depleting pension reserves and a slumping national economy is to take in more immigrants. It is possible that high levels of immigration may lead to a “smaller piece of the bigger pie” that is the Canadian economy for the average worker. This is by no means a given, but dependent on the performance of the economy and government policy at a given time. In short, Martin Collacott is right to proclaim that Canadians &ldq -

Heat wave topples temperature records across B.C.
via vancouversun.com
The Lower Mainland has survived its first heat wave of the summer.
After a soggy spring, summer hit the B.C. south coast with a vengeance on the weekend, breaking at least 10 daily temperature records on Saturday.
Lytton was the hottest spot in the province, its 36.5 C toppling a record set almost a century ago in 1926. Cache Creek came a close second with 35.6 C.
The two-day heat wave also saw records broken Saturday in Victoria, Squamish, and Abbotsford, where the mercury topped 32.2 C.

Opinion: Monitoring sexual abuse helps prevent it
via vancouversun.com
Last year, B.C. Green party Leader Andrew Weaver pioneered efforts to make institutions of higher education more accountable for sexual misconduct. His private member’s bill — which inspired Premier Christy Clark to share her own personal story of assault — became the basis of the eventual Sexual Violence and Misconduct Policy Act. The SVMPA mandates that public institutions finally have policies in place for students and staff to safely report sexual violence.

If you’re planning to pack the family in the car and hit the road this summer, other drivers aren’t the only hindrances you’re liable to encounter.
There are hundreds of road projects underway across the province, among them crack sealing, paving and bridge replacements.
In the city of Vancouver, major projects at the Burrard Bridge, on Southwest Marine Drive and near 41st Avenue and Oak Street will be joined by a major reorganization of the on-ramps at the north end of the Kni -
Dragon boat festival draws crowds to False Creek under sunny skies
via vancouversun.com
Thousands of dragon boaters and onlookers gathered in False Creek on Sunday to compete in the Concord Pacific Vancouver Dragon Boat Festival, watch races, indulge in food truck fare and enjoy the sunshine.
Unfortunately, racers were challenged by at least one boater who refused to move his vessel from a spot that interfered with one of the race lanes, said executive director Anne Phelps. On Sunday, the vessel, piled with garbage and decked out with tarps, spewed sparks and black smoke from -

Black Lives Matter holds alternate Pride march in Vancouver
via vancouversun.com
Crowds chanted “Black Lives Matter” in a downtown Vancouver park Sunday before marching in support of the LGBTQ community.
March on Pride, organized by the local chapter of Black Lives Matter, was an alternative event to the annual parade that the group says is more welcoming to marginalized groups by blocking police and corporate involvement.
Black Lives Matter organizer Cicely Blain says Pride was started as a protest against police violence on minorities and Sunday’s event w -
Rob Shaw: Throne speech has torched Clark and de Jong's credibility
via vancouversun.com
VICTORIA — If you were stunned at the avalanche of promises and massive spending spree that tumbled out of the B.C. Liberal government’s throne speech last week, you weren’t alone.
Among longtime Liberals, there are more than a few uncomfortable questions for Premier Christy Clark about the ramifications of the two dozen policy reversals, new proposals and outright flip-flops she unveiled in Thursday’s speech.
“I think there’s likely to be some real angst toda -
Ian Mulgrew: B.C.'s civil courts as guilty of complacency as criminal courts
via vancouversun.com
While the Supreme Court of Canada has scolded players in criminal legal system for their culture of complacency, it should read the same riot act to players in the civil court.
It’s bad enough that big constitutional cases, such as the adjourned challenge to medicare, take most of a decade to get to trial, but even minor automobile collisions can take years and years to resolve.
And far too many of the proceedings feature ridiculous armies of competing “experts” who can’t -
