Drink plenty of water and don’t forget the sunblock, advises Environment Canada.
Thanks to a high-pressure ridge, continuous sun and warmer-than-normal temperatures are being forecast for Metro Vancouver and southern B.C. on Saturday and Sunday.
“It is going to be a hot weekend,” meteorologist Cindy Yu said Friday. “We’re potentially looking at eight to nine degrees above normal. Stay hydrated and enjoy the sun.”
On Saturday, areas closer to the water in

Weekend heat wave set to sweep south coast from Whistler to Hope
via vancouversun.com
As Rob Thomas and Santana would say, it’s a hot one.
A heat wave is set to sweep the Lower Mainland this weekend before cooling down on Monday. Special weather statements have been issued for the region stretching from Whistler all the way to Hope.
“A strong upper ridge of high pressure building over the province will result in a brief heat wave over southwest B.C.,” read a weather statement from Environment Canada.
Temperatures will reach 32 degrees near the water, with temper -

Vancouver Fire and Rescue Service reports an 18 per cent increase in overdose calls over the same period.
A news release from the city says a local medical lab has also identified a spike in the number of u -

Town Talk: East Side Junior Alternative School marathoners may lead world
via vancouversun.com
RUNNING UNWILD: East Side Junior Alternative School students know about running. From other schools, family or problematic pasts, that is, or to catch up with those to whom life dealt a better hand. Saskatoon-born teacher Trevor Stokes, 47, had a better idea. If students began running full marathons, he figured, they might lead their contemporaries in more ways than one. It worked. His program has reportedly developed the world’s largest cohort of student marathon runners. Thirty completed -
Abbotsford school district makes 31 recommendations after fatal stabbing of student
via vancouversun.com
ABBOTSFORD — A B.C. school district is making 31 recommendations to improve security after a fatal stabbing last year at a secondary school in Abbotsford.
A report by the Abbotsford School District says the lack of separation between a public library and a school library may pose a risk to students.
It calls for some sort of physical barrier between the two libraries in Abbotsford.
The report examines a stabbing last November that killed one student and critically injured a second at Abbot -
Man found in distress in east Vancouver parking lot died from an accidental fall
via vancouversun.com
Vancouver police say a man who was found in distress and later died in hospital had fallen accidentally and that there was no foul play.
On Thursday early morning, police began investigating after a man was found in the Kingsgate Mall parking lot, near Broadway and Kingsway, in Mount Pleasant.
“B.C. Ambulance and police responded, and he was rushed to hospital where he died,” Const. Jason Doucette had said in a news release.
Updates shared Friday said the death was “not crimina -
'I'm in trouble': A harrowing story from the heart
via vancouversun.com
I was washing the dog on Monday, May 1, when I suddenly felt light-headed and vaguely nauseous, then began to sweat profusely. I sat down on the edge of the tub. I knew something was wrong, but being a guy — and therefore stupid — I sat for five minutes on the bathtub and waited for the feeling to go away.
It didn’t.
So I stood up, told my wife my symptoms, and she said she was driving me to Emergency at Delta Hospital.
I walked up to the ER registration desk, produced my beat- -

Finding one's place on the Juan de Fuca Trail
via vancouversun.com
Kurt Johnston is a recent transplant to Vancouver, B.C. Calling Ontario home most of his life, he and his partner made the move west to live, explore, and fall in love with the West Coast. He shares with us this journal from their recent hike along the Juan de Fuca Trail.
They say to go west, to see the country: to experience things grander, wilder, and more beautiful. A long, wet winter – coupled with a lack of knowledge of our new environs – has limited our exploration to short, te -

Canada 150: Vancouver Art Gallery’s five B.C. art works for nation’s birthday
via vancouversun.com
We asked the Vancouver Art Gallery‘s chief curator to choose five works — out of more than 12,000 in the permanent collection — to help celebrate Canada’s 150th birthday.
More than visually representing aspects of B.C., they also refer to art history and to ideas and events that allow viewers to consider “who we are as people and societies,” says Daina Augaitis.
“Art often points to things beyond itself — one can a learn a lot about the world -
Douglas Todd: 'Hygge' fad has depth, if you want it
via vancouversun.com
I’ve just returned from the land of Viking burial sites, Tuborg beer and the Borgen TV series — so, of course, I’ve also become an expert on “hygge.”
The Danish word “hygge,” as everyone exposed to global trends is aware, describes everything associated with cosiness, intimacy and togetherness.
Pronounced “hoo-gah,” this quality of well being, comfort and safety is the subject of more than a dozen recent books, many of which are on bestseller -
Daily Poll: Do you believe Premier Christy Clark's throne speech?
via vancouversun.com
On Thursday, the 41st Parliament of the B.C. Legislature opened with the election of a Speaker and the reading of Premier Christy Clark’s throne speech.
Liberal MLA Steve Thomson was named the Speaker, having been the only candidate to put his name forward. The leaders of all three parties praised his appointment.
Clark’s speech, however, raised some eyebrows. Reporter Rob Shaw was in Victoria on Thursday to hear from Clark – as well as B.C. NDP Leader John Horgan and B.C. Gree -

Stolen Dawson City 'sour toe' returned to its rightful owner

DAWSON CITY, Yukon — A mummified human toe that is the key ingredient in a strange drinking ritual in Dawson City is back where it belongs.
RCMP in the Yukon city say the shrivelled, brown toe that was stolen last weekend has been returned to its rightful owner.

Canada 150: Gary Gait, the Michael Jordan of lacrosse

B.C. has always been a hotbed for lacrosse. So perhaps it’s only fitting that the best lacrosse player in history comes from Victoria.
“Over the years, Gary Gait has been described as the Michael Jordan of the sport and the game’s Pavarotti or Nureyev,” wrote The Vancouver Sun’s Gary Kingston in 2011. “His identical twin brother, Paul, is often ranked just behind him.”
This isn’t hype. Check out his record from his biography in the B.C. S -
Vancouver's polarizing Cube House on market for $14 million
via vancouversun.com
A cube-shaped house on Vancouver’s Golden Mile that drew mixed reviews while it was being built is hitting the market Friday with an asking price of $14 million.
The 2,280-square-foot house on Point Grey Road has been described as “hideous” and a “box with a skirt” because of its shape, the stark, galvanized-steel exterior on the second-storey and the lack of windows on the south facade.
“If there’s just one window on that facade, there w -

Opinion: Bike lanes versus nature a conundrum
via vancouversun.com
I remember cycling with my family when I was younger, crossing the Lions Gate Bridge from North Vancouver to visit Stanley Park. I feared falling onto the busy road as we crossed the bridge, so as soon as we reached the other side I focused on the chirping birds nesting in the trees.
We cyclists often are concerned about our safety, but also value nature. Recently, the City of Vancouver decided to cut down 14 trees to widen the cycling path for safety purposes, but species such as birds that rel -

The ‘cube house’ at 3691 Point Grey Rd.
It doesn’t look like anything else in the neighbourhood.
The Point Grey home —a 2,280-square-foot four-level house is a cube of galvanized steel atop a glassed-in ground floor area — sitting on the corner of Vancouver’s coveted “golden mile” was described as “unneighbourly” by some and “ghastly” by others during construction last year.

Vaughn Palmer: Liberal explanations disguise reckless spending plans
via vancouversun.com
VICTORIA — As Premier Christy Clark tells it, the B.C. Liberals were able this week to match the NDP and Green parties dollar for dollar on some big ticket spending programs because of a windfall in provincial revenues.

This year’s sockeye salmon run on the Skeena River in northern B.C., second in production only to the Fraser River, is forecast to be the lowest on record.
As a result, more than a dozen First Nations communities along the river and on the coast have decided not to fish the sockeye run, the second such decision in the past four years.
It has also resulted in a decision by Fisheries and Oceans Canada to close the recreational fishery on the Skeena River to all salmon species, including Chin -

The City of Vancouver officially reopened the North Plaza of the Vancouver Art Gallery on Thursday.
The new plaza is 4,197 square metres and will have a capacity for up to 1,500 people, providing ample space for the many gatherings that take place in the historic location in the centre of downtown, the city said in a news release.

B.C. Liberals cite windfall revenues as grounds to adopt NDP/Green proposals
via vancouversun.com
VICTORIA — B.C.’s Liberal government delivered what is likely its last gasp in power Thursday, with a throne speech that borrowed heavily on ideas from opponents and pledged “humility” to voters.
But it won’t be enough to stave off the party’s defeat next week in the legislature, after the NDP and Greens reconfirmed their commitment to topple the Liberals on a confidence vote in the legislature.
The speech from Premier Christy Clark’s government was pack -
Dan Fumano: New Chinatown proposals rise from ashes of Keefer condo rejection
via vancouversun.com
Following a showdown over a landmark street corner, one of Canada’s endangered historic neighbourhoods is at a crossroads.
Vancouver councillors will introduce a pair of motions next week arising from the rejection, earlier this month, of a rezoning application by local developer Beedie seeking to build a 12-storey condo development on the edge of Chinatown. That council vote followed months of acrimony between opposing sides, with councillors describing the process as the most emotional a -
Class of '47 at Grandview High School of Commerce celebrates 70th reunion
via vancouversun.com
Such are life’s sweet little ironies.
“When I was in junior high at Templeton they gave us an aptitude assessment to decide which path we should take,” Merrill Gordon said. “It looked like I should be in the labour workforce so I put down L, but my Ls look like Cs.”
The rest, as they say, is history.
Gordon was one of 11 alumni of Grandview High School of Commerce who celebrated the class’s 70th-anniversary reunion in Vancouver last Saturday.

B.C. throne speech makes grand promises for transit, transportation
via vancouversun.com
When the New Democrats pledged during the recent election campaign to eliminate tolls on the Port Mann and Golden Ears bridges, Premier Christy Clark called the idea expensive and “irresponsible”.
But in Thursday’s throne speech, Clark changed her tune and promised to get rid of tolls on the Port Mann “as quickly as possible” and work with TransLink to end tolling on the Golden Ears. During their campaign, the Liberals had promised to cap tolls at $500 per year per -
Then and Now: What the Liberals promised before the election and what they are now promising in the throne speech
via vancouversun.com
As she has been hinting for the last week, Premier Christy Clark’s throne speech flip-flopped on major issues ranging from social services to transit, abandoning long-held Liberal positions in favour of policies championed by her political rivals.
The chart below compares what the Liberals promised during the campaign to what they said in their uncharacteristic throne speech on Thursday. It clearly shows that the Liberals are promising — if they can cling to power — to es -

The air of Vancouver real estate is rarefied for ordinary purchasers, but prominent philanthropists Joseph and Rosalie Segal are reaching for the top of the luxury market with a $63-million asking price for their palatial Point Grey mansion.
That price would set a record for Metro Vancouver, according to a statement from Sotheby’s International Realty Canada.

B.C. unveils throne speech of campaign promises for potentially short-lived government
via vancouversun.com
VICTORIA – Premier Christy Clark delivered what might be her government’s final throne speech Thursday, a grab-bag of campaign promises from the other parties lining up to defeat her, and a theme of “humility” at the loss of her majority in the May 9 election.
“The May election delivered a divided result,” read Lt.-Gov. Judith Guichon in the legislature. “Your government has listened to that result and brings forward this agenda to gain the House’s -
Live: Polarizing Point Grey cube house hits the market for $14 million
via vancouversun.com
It doesn’t look like anything else in the neighbourhood.
The Point Grey home —a 2,280-square-foot four-level house is a cube of galvanized steel atop a glassed-in ground floor area — sitting on the corner of Vancouver’s coveted “golden mile” was described as “unneighbourly” by some and “ghastly” by others during construction last year.
The new house replaced this 1935 character house, which was purchased in 2015 for $3.5 million.

In August 2016, B.C. Supreme Court Justice Miriam Gropper found David Alan Lessor guilty of one count of sexual assault and one count of sexual interference of the girl, who cannot be identified due to a publication ban.

Air India bombing anniversary brings frustrating memories
via vancouversun.com
Relatives of some Air India bombing victims say they feel like a forgotten part of the country’s history as Canada marks its 150th birthday next week.
And they say they are no longer being kept informed about the ongoing RCMP investigation into the June 23, 1985 terrorist attack.
“Canada has forgotten the Canadians that were lost,” Shipra Rana said from Toronto on Thursday. “I don’t think that the cry of all of us is ever going to be heard.”
