When foul-mouthed anti-hero Deadpool comes knocking, it’s no surprise no one’s around to answer.
Production on the sequel to the unconventional superhero flick has started in B.C., with filming taking place on Vancouver Island.
Star Ryan Reynolds shared the first official set image from the sequel’s production on Saturday through Twitter and Instagram.
“Dropped by the X-mansion. Big f-cking surprise. No one’s home,” tweeted the actor on Saturday, alongside an

Nostalgia for dad's day: Car shows abound this weekend
via vancouversun.com
Reports of car culture’s death are greatly exaggerated.
For proof, look no further than parks, closed-off downtown streets and recreation centres across Metro Vancouver on weekends throughout the summer as car shows and swap meets draw thousands of participants and spectators.
Some come in the sentimental spirit of nostalgia, others to stoke the passions that chrome machines inflame, while others just to see some cool cars and maybe do a little Lotto Max dreaming.

Metal detector: Lifelong Ford fan the go-to guy for restorers hunting rare car parts
via vancouversun.com
“I believe that some people are born into the wrong time,” says Doug Blamey. “And I was born too late.”
How late? Probably a half-century, the 64-year old figures.
The longtime Maple Ridge resident — he’s owned his Dewdney Trunk Road corner lot house for four decades – has been many things during his well-lived life: husband to Bernice, father to five kids, CP Rail worker, movie extra.
But ‘parts picker’ is what he’s considered him -

Weekend Poll: Do animal abuse cases make you reconsider eating meat?
via vancouversun.com
This week, the B.C. SPCA announced it had launched an investigation into a Chilliwack chicken-catching company after undercover footage revealed alleged instances of animal abuse. Six employees were fired after the probe began.
Just days later, Crown prosecution shared it had filed an appeal to B.C. Supreme Court, seeking increased jail time for those convicted in a Chilliwack dairy farm abuse case.
Some activists have encouraged individuals to stop eating meat as a cold-turkey solution, while o -

Apologies to our readers for undelivered copies of The Vancouver Sun
via vancouversun.com
We’d like to apologize to our readers who missed their morning Vancouver Sun on Saturday.
Owing to major production issues at our press, our run finished late and as a result subscribers on Vancouver Island and other parts of B.C. did not receive their papers.
We will be sending out Saturday’s Sun along with the Sunday Province edition.
Our glitches also led to very late Friday papers.

Sweet succulents: Desert plants hottest greenery of the season
via vancouversun.com
Social media has a funny way of making people — and things — famous.
But unlike #selfies, memes and makeup bloggers, its latest protégé is something we can all easily embrace: succulents.
“Succulents have been hugely trending,” Sophia De Mello, a co-owner of Botany Living florists in Vancouver, says of the plants, which include cacti (All cacti are succulents but not all succulents are cacti, get it?). “The advent of social m -
Makeover: Going for fun, versatile and functional
via vancouversun.com
Lesley Santillan is a new mom and was in need of a style update.
After having her baby, Lesley was feeling out of touch with her style and was having trouble shopping for her body type. Her area of concern is the tummy. She struggles to find the right clothing to camouflage that area and tends to wear boxy and baggy tops, which make her look and feel frumpy. My goal was to pull together an outfit that is fun, versatile and functional, all while looking classic, polished and ladylike.

Scale and sensibility

Display suites present a glimpse of the lifestyle that is possible in a condo development. In a kitchen, there’ll be a place for wine glasses, coffee mugs and a modest set of dinnerware; deep pot drawers will hold high-end cookware, while dried herbs and spices might nestle in a drawer organizer alongside the cooktop. In the bedrooms, clothes will be hung in the closets, and in bathrooms, towels and soaps are often complemented by a candle or two to evoke a luxury retreat. Everything has i -
Father's Day food: A make-your-own pizza party for dad
via vancouversun.com
Dad needs a pizza stone. On this point there can be no quibbling.
If you want to make a good pizza — anything resembling the fresh, crisp, chewy delight that is pizza Napoletana — you must have a hot oven with a hot cooking surface.
The wood-fired stone oven at Nicli Antica in Gastown hits 800 F (425 C) before the first pizza of the day hits the cooking deck. Your oven doesn’t go that high, but you can still approximate the alchemy of high-heat cookery with a pi -
Waterside residency on offer at West Harbour

Sometimes the difference between success and failure in building a community comes down to a developer putting aside his or her ego and going for what feels right, says the developer of one of Kelowna’s most successful lakeside communities.
Renee Wasylyk says her company, Troika Management Corp., was on the verge of going with a 1,500-home development, including a 19-storey concrete highrise on Okanagan Lake, when she got what she called a “Spidey tingle”, a reference to the fo -

Viva Cuba: An historical journey through an island frozen in time
via vancouversun.com
An Explorer’s First LandingsOur vehicle bounces and rattles over dusty roads bordered by expansive stretches of lush fields dotted with swaying palm trees. Abundant fruit trees shade outer rows of sugarcane against a backdrop of the Maniabon mountain range. While this landscape captures my attention, it more importantly commanded the attention of the intrepid Christopher Columbus upon his arrival in 1492. In his journal, he described Bariay Bay in Cuba’s eastern Holguin province as & -
Tranquil setting boosts the appeal of Intracorp's Belpark
via vancouversun.com
Finding a tranquil, natural setting that still provides easy access to rapid transit is a hard thing to pull off in Vancouver’s increasingly tightly developed neighbourhoods. But the people at Intracorp reckon they’ve nailed it with Belpark, a 120-home development of three buildings planned for a block east of Cambie Street on West 59th Avenue.
“We have an extensive history building on the west side of Vancouver, including at UBC,” said Barrett Sprowson, vice-president of -
The Home Front: Turning chopsticks into tabletops
via vancouversun.com
There are not many conversations that start out with the words: “Imagine you’re a chopstick”. But such is the passion of Felix Böck, founder of Vancouver’s ChopValue, a company that recycles around 300,000 chopsticks a week, turning them into products for the home. You can’t help but be right there with him when he asks you to embody the humble eating tool on its journey from the bamboo field to the bin.
“You’ve been cut down in a bamboo forest -

This Week in History: 1928 Amelia Earhart becomes the first woman to fly across the Atlantic
via vancouversun.com
Eighty-nine years ago, Amelia Earhart became the first woman to fly across the Atlantic.
“AMELIA SPANS OCEAN!” trumpeted a front-page headline in The Vancouver Sun on June 18, 1928.
The flight came just over a year after Charles Lindbergh electrified the world with the first solo flight across the Atlantic. The Sun labelled Earhart’s “Lindy’s double” in a photo on the front page, while the Province called her the “Girl Lindbergh.”

Opinion: Weaver made bad deal for Greens and B.C.
via vancouversun.com
I’m sorry to be the one to tell Andrew Weaver and the Green caucus that they traded their milk cow for three magic NDP beans — but it’s time someone did.
Having won three seats and the balance of power in the recent provincial election, they entered into negotiations with both the NDP and B.C. Liberals. But from the start, the numbers presented only one option to form a stable government with a workable major -
Opinion: Time to cut our losses and stop Site C hydro project
via vancouversun.com
At the Nov. 7, 2016, Clean Energy B.C. Conference, I voiced opposition to the Site C dam on the Peace River in northeast B.C. for economic, fiscal, environmental and aboriginal treaty-rights reasons.
I personally and professionally think Site C is an economic, fiscal, environmental and aboriginal treaty-rights disaster.
B.C. Hydro’s demand across three core groups (residential, commercial and industrial) has been dead flat for the last 10 years; as the extractive industries show no sign of -
Opinion: New government can take immediate steps to address province’s drug crisis
via vancouversun.com
Ambulances criss-cross urban areas responding to overdose calls. City morgues are unable to accommodate the number of citizens lost to toxic drugs. A prominent journalist who covers the gangsters in control of the lucrative illicit drug trade is threatened with death.
While this description might sound like a lawless Latin American failed state, this is the current reality in B.C. The province’s new government has an urgent task ahead.
As director of the province’s new B.C. Centre on -
Opinion: NDP must clarify how it will pay for deal with Greens
via vancouversun.com
The power-sharing deal struck by the NDP and Green party means British Columbians could soon see an NDP minority government propped up by Green support.
But if NDP Leader John Horgan becomes premier, the deal with Andrew Weaver’s Greens would commit the NDP to policies and government spending not part of the NDP’s election platform.
This raises an important question — will a Horgan-led government keep the NDP’s election promise to balance the budget, and if so, how?
