Christie Brinkley talks social media and the importance of love
via vancouversun.com
There are a lot of wonderful things about social media.
Through platforms and apps such as Instagram, Facebook and Snapchat, users are able to make friends, keep old friends and pretty much connect with anyone and everything from around the world in an instant.
But that level of openness and access also comes at a price.
From cyber bullying to live-streamed acts of violence, the very apps that connect and promote a global community can quickly devolve into arenas of isolation, abuse -

Awe, yes: Cam Ontko's release shows Lions leaning towards Micah Awe at linebacker
via vancouversun.com
The B.C. Lions’ Tuesday announcement that they were releasing Cameron Ontko doubled as a vote of confidence for Micah Awe at the linebacker position.
Ontko, 25, a second-year Lion who openly talked about patterning his game after Adam Bighill, had been considered one of the frontrunners for the spot left open by Bighill’s departure to the New Orleans Saints, but Awe, a newcomer out of Texas Tech, has been the one turning heads at training camp so far.

Opinion: The debt we owe to Vancouver’s Chinatown
via vancouversun.com
Let’s face it, we’ve neglected Chinatown. We all have fond childhood memories of the glory days of Chinatown — barbecue pork buns from Maxims, pepper steak at Goldstone and Cantonese lessons at the Chinese Cultural Centre.
But today, outside of heading down there for the odd craving for lemon pepper chicken wings from Phnom Penh, many of us have moved on to newer, shinier things and haven’t looked back since. The allure of the air-conditioned T&Ts for groceries, the s -
How an NDP-Green gov't can free-up B.C.’s housing supply
via vancouversun.com
After last month’s election, the NDP and Green party appear poised to form the next government in Victoria. And yet, in their 10-page agreement, (which has sweeping implications for the future of governance in B.C.) they make only brief mention of one of this province’s hottest issues — housing affordability — by promising to increase the supply of “affordable housing” and tackle “speculation and fraud” in the housing market.

Canada 150: Pamela Anderson a centennial-day baby who became a global sex icon
via vancouversun.com
To mark Canada’s 150th birthday, we are counting down to Canada Day with profiles of 150 noteworthy British Columbians.
She’s been called TV’s first sex goddess. Cultural critic Chuck Klosterman called her “the embodiment of modern female sexuality.” The Encyclopedia of British Columbia dryly notes that at the end of the 20th century, she could claim to be the most widely recognized Canadian in the world.
There’s little dispute that Anderson is a pop cult -

Burnaby man waged online campaign to destroy his ex-wife, court told
via vancouversun.com
A woman who is accusing her ex-husband of trying to destroy her life by harassing her through emails and on a website began her testimony in court Monday.
Crown counsel Mark Myhre told a B.C. Supreme Court jury that the campaign of harassment by Patrick Fox of Burnaby against Desiree Capuano of Arizona arose from a bitter custody dispute involving their son.
At the end of the dispute, Capuano had custody of the boy, who cannot be identified due to a publication ban, Myhre told the jury.

Vaughn Palmer: Barely a twinkle as Liberals march out fallen stars
via vancouversun.com
VICTORIA — For a government that passed the best-before date weeks ago, the swearing-in Monday for Premier Christy Clark and her revised cabinet lineup was a predictably sombre affair.
“They look like they are arriving for a root canal,” quipped one wag as the B.C. Liberals came to government house for an oath-taking ceremony bereft of the usual pomp and circumstance.
As the event proceeded, observers toyed with what to call this strange entity that will in all likelihood -

VANCOUVER — Animal advocates say they have opened an investigation into “absolutely sickening” alleged animal abuse by a chicken-catching service in Chilliwack, B.C.

Moving day at Balmoral brings stress, but also 'a fresh start'
via vancouversun.com
Immediately after Michael Hurlburt moved into the Balmoral Hotel a little over two years ago, he started trying to find a way to move out.
Hurlburt finally left the Balmoral to move into a new home Monday, along with about 150 other residents of the Downtown Eastside single-room-occupancy (SRO) hotel. The mass relocation followed an evacuation order 10 days earlier from the City of Vancouver, citing “imminent danger” and chronic problems in the century-old building, one of sever -
'It is going to get worse before it gets better': Health minister on opioid crisis
via vancouversun.com
Federal Health Minister Jane Philpott says more people are expected to die of illicit opioid overdoses in Canada this year compared with nearly 2,500 fatalities recorded in 2016.
“It is going to get worse before it gets better,” Philpott told the National Health Leadership Conference on Monday, calling B.C. “ground zero” because the crisis claimed 935 lives in the province last year.
The Public Health Agency of Canada released figures last week saying at least 2,458 peopl -
REAL SCOOP: Longshoreman loses court battle over security pass
via vancouversun.com
Arun Randhawa doesn’t think its fair that he can’t get a security pass to work on the Vancouver waterfront just because his brother are convicted drug smugglers.
But the Federal Court of Canada has ruled that it was reasonable for the Minister of Transport to deny the pass to Randhawa because of his sibling association. Both his brother Alexie and Alvin are also longshoreman. When Alexie was being sentenced in California for possessing 107 kilos of cocaine in 2008, both Arun and Alvi -

Judge rules that confession of man accused of murdering West Van millionaire is admissible
via vancouversun.com
A judge has ruled that the confession of a man accused of fatally shooting a West Vancouver male and chopping up his body is admissible in court.
A lawyer for Li Zhao, 56, who has pleaded not guilty to the May 2016 second-degree murder of Gang Yuan, 42, had argued that the accused’s statements to police after he was arrested were not given voluntarily and should be thrown out.
In a brief ruling Monday, B.C. Supreme Court Justice Terence Schultes said he “greatly appreciated” th -
Surrey trees falling fast from development on private land
via vancouversun.com
Healthy trees on private property in Surrey are being chopped down at a frantic and increasing pace in recent years, according to data in a city report slated for Monday’s council meeting.
Nearly 5,800 trees were given the axe by property owners and developers in 2013. By 2016, following year-after-year increases, that number had jumped to nearly 9,900, and this year it’s on pace to break 10,000 by a wide margin.
All that chopping is a result of “growth pressure south of the Fr -
Murderous Greeks gang members appeal convictions
via vancouversun.com
The judge presiding over the trial of three men convicted in a series of brutal gang slayings in Vernon more than a decade ago improperly instructed the jury in the case, a defence lawyer argued Monday.
Mark Jette told the B.C. Court of Appeal that the key Crown witnesses against his client, Leslie Podolski, and co-accused Peter Manolakos and Sheldon O’Donnell, were extremely unsavory criminals themselves.
Jette said the defence lawyers challenged the credibility of those witnesses in open -
