The brutal nature of the crimes committed by a man who stabbed his daughter to death and smothered his two sons means he poses too much of a threat to be allowed escorted outings into the community, a Crown lawyer says.
Wendy Dawson asked a British Columbia Supreme Court judge on Monday to designate Allan Schoenborn, 49, a high-risk accused. Schoenborn was found not criminally responsible because of a mental disorder for killing his three children, aged five to 10, at the family’s home in

B.C. Premier Christy Clark introduces new cabinet
via vancouversun.com
Their reign is expected to be a short one, but Premier Christy Clark and her cabinet were officially sworn in by Lt.-Gov. Judith Guichon at Government House on Monday in Victoria.
Clark will recall the legislature on June 22 for a confidence vote that she’s expected to lose after the New Democrats and Greens reached an agreement to allow the NDP to form a minority government.
The Liberals won 43 seats in the 87-seat legislature, with the NDP winning 41 seats and the Greens three.

Health minister says overdose issue requires treatment without judgment
via vancouversun.com
VANCOUVER — Federal Health Minister Jane Philpott says more people are expected to die of illicit opioid overdoses in Canada this year compared with nearly 2,500 fatalities recorded in 2016.
“It is going to get worse before it gets better,” Philpott told the National Health Leadership Conference on Monday, calling British Columbia “ground zero” because the crisis claimed 935 lives in the province last year.

B.C. longshoreman loses court battle for security pass because of criminal brothers
via vancouversun.com
A B.C. longshoreman with two brothers who have been convicted of drug smuggling in the U.S. has lost his bid to get security clearance for the Vancouver waterfront.
Arun Randhawa challenged a Transport Canada decision to deny him the special clearance because of the organized crime links of his brothers, both of whom are also longshoremen.
But the Federal Court of Canada ruled against Randhawa, saying the government’s decision to deny his security clearance was reasonable.

The cyclist, a 48-year-old West Vancouver man, was struck by a black pickup truck, possibly a Ford F-150, while travelling westbound on Bellevue Avenue at around 8:30 p.m.

That 'crocodile' in Surrey is actually just a tire
via vancouversun.com
Surrey RCMP were called twice to a marsh off Highway 17 and 104 Avenue on the weekend after receiving reports of a crocodile swimming in the murky water.
The crocodile, the largest living reptile measuring 20 feet long and 2,000 pounds, can be found in North America — in Mexico and Florida — but the furthest north they usually get is Tampa Bay. You won’t find the American croc in Surrey.
That “crocodile” people were spotting in the Surrey marsh, Mounties say, -

Off the beaten track in Seattle

So you think you know Seattle?
If you’ve made even one trip there, you have probably been to the Pike Place Market, the Space Needle and the Seattle Art Museum. Those are good choices, but a bit mainstream — you’ll find all three in any travel guidebook or online top-10 list of what to see in the Emerald City.

Vancouver man dies after shooting himself during Kamloops pistol contest
via vancouversun.com
KAMLOOPS — A 50-year-old Vancouver man who was competing in a pistol competition Sunday has died in what RCMP say was a tragic accident.
Cpl. Jodi Shelkie says the man was taking part in a pistol contest at the Target Sports Complex in Kamloops when he lost control of his weapon and accidentally shot himself in the torso.
She says witnesses administered first aid right away and the man was taken to hospital by ambulance but he died of his injuries shortly after reaching hospital.

Cars 3 follows Pixar's winning formula
via vancouversun.com
EMERYVILLE, CA. — Kids will love it. Their parents will love it. Their grandparents will love it.
This has always been the strength of Pixar movies, and as I came to appreciate during an exclusive behind the scenes tour of the studio, interviews with the Cars 3 director, writers and creative teams, it’s by no means a happy accident.
This Friday the Radiator Springs gang is back for the third instalment of the Cars franchise, and after getting an exclusive, behind-the-scenes tour of w -
Nickelback Feed the Machine once again

This Friday, Billboard Magazine’s Group of the Decade (1999-2009) releases its ninth album. Titled, Feed the Machine, this is the first album to follow the Canadian quartet cancelling the majority of its tour in support of 2014’s No Fixed Address. Lead singer Chad Kroeger required surgery on a vocal-cord cyst, so the band was obliged to bow-out as he went through a significant recovery process.

Cars 3 an unabashed love letter to NASCAR
via vancouversun.com
“It’s not always the fastest and strongest car that wins. It’s the smartest.”
No, that’s not a tagline from Cars 3. It’s a quote from Ray Evernham, a man who knows a think or two about winning races. He was four-time NASCAR champion Jeff Gordon’s crew chief, owned his own NASCAR team for 10 years and is currently is an analyst for ESPN’s NASCAR coverage.
He also worked closely with Pixar Creative Director Jay Ward as a consultant on Cars 3, bringin -
'Truth to material' guides Cars 3 artists

There’s sweet irony in the fact that despite Pixar’s cutting-edge, computer-generated animation, the studio’s beloved characters are first born from a few simple pencil lines on a sketchpad.
And creating the new ‘car-acters’ for Cars 3 was no exception, only this time the Pixar artists were joined by a design legend from the real world of cars. J Mays was Chief Creative Officer for Ford Motor Company for 16 years, overseeing designs ranging from the Aston Martin DB9 -

Lending their voices

State-of-the-art animation and great story-telling is at the heart of the Cars franchise, but it’s the human voices that breath life into the anthropomorphized ‘car-acters.’

Cars 3 followed 'Story is King' script

‘What is your purpose in life?’
That weighty theme is at the heart of the Cars 3, and serves as testimony to the skilled story-telling ability of Pixar Studio’s creative teams.
After all, this is a cartoon, right?
Well, yes and no. True, it is an animated film, but as Pixar movies of the past have demonstrated, that medium doesn’t exclude exploring life’s big questions through characters based on toys, robots and fantastical floating houses. And, of course, cars.

Building a balance between modern architecture and sustainability
via vancouversun.com
Often in any business endeavour, it’s the relative newcomer with fresh ideas who sets new standards of quality, and for Metro Vancouver’s residential development sector, that person is 38-year-old Nick Kerchum.
Kerchum’s company, Natural Balance Premium Home Builders, most recently took home a 2017 Grand Georgie award as Custom Home Builder of the Year as well as a Georgie in the category of Best Custom Home between $1.8 and $3 million.
The wins would be noteworthy for any home -
Opinion: Pipeline approvals based on faulty assumptions
via vancouversun.com
Once the political reality of B.C. is determined, next steps on energy projects like Kinder Morgan’s Trans Mountain pipeline expansion and the Site C dam will follow.
And while the federal government has approved the pipeline expansion, the B.C. NDP and Green party — which have signed a power-sharing deal following the provincial election — say they’ll use every tool at their disposal to scuttle it.
When determining whether or not the pipeline expansion from Edmonton to B -
Opinion: A slow burn is quickening in B.C.
via vancouversun.com
There is a growing sense of anger and frustration as more people in B.C. realize how their very livelihoods are being treated as pawns in a political chess game between the NDP and Green parties.
Unable to form a government without violating the convention requiring the as-yet-to-be-named Speaker to be a neutral arbitrator, in a classic case of the tail wagging the dog, the NDP-Green coalition is preparing to implement ideologically driven, insular changes to the economy.

Canada 150: Stuart Keate, last of the great Vancouver newspaper publishers
via vancouversun.com
Robert and Donald Cromie are the publishers most associated with The Vancouver Sun. Robert because he saved the paper when it looked like it was going under in 1917, Donald because he was in charge when the Sun overtook The Province to become Vancouver’s biggest paper in the 1940s and ’50s.
Unlike the Cromies, Stuart Keate didn’t own the paper – he was just a hired gun. But the Keate era from 1964 to 1978 will probably go down as the best in the paper’s history.

Separate vigils in Castlegar and Calgary were held Sunday to remember the Canadian woman killed in last week’s London attack who left behind a legacy of generosity and community service.

We are all Italian today as Commercial Drive celebrates Italian Day
via vancouversun.com
Swiss nuts, fresh-squeezed lemonade, Slavic dessert rolls and Vietnamese coffee Popsicles.
Those are just some of the foods that helped to underscore a key take-away from Vancouver’s Italian Day on The Drive Sunday: We, evidently, are all Italian.
Between the tacos, curries, Portuguese plates, hamburgers and myriad other international foods being sold in tents on Commercial Drive, it’s almost hard to find true Italian fare — pizza, pasta, cannoli and the like.

VSO ends season on a high note
via vancouversun.com
This year’s season end concert of the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra is one of those “you had to have been there” propositions, a concert with a favourite concerto (Korngold’s lush Violin Concerto, played with fire and finesse by Baiba Skride), Mahler’s grand and glorious First Symphony, and the premiere of an extraordinary set of songs for soprano and orchestra by Music Director Bramwell Tovey.
The Korngold concerto helped win Tovey, the VSO, and violinist James Ehne -
