Apprentice jockey Jose Asencio was competing last weekend at Hastings Racecourse when his horse clipped heels with another horse, sending the young jockey and his steed tumbling into the dirt.
While the horse, a three-year-old named McCallum, walked away uninjured, Asencio wasn’t so lucky. The ensuing spill fractured a vertebra in his back and broke his leg, among other injuries. He was rushed to Vancouver General Hospital, where he underwent multiple surgeries. He now has a steel rod in h

Downtown Eastside decrepit hotels vital, but temporary answer to housing woes: experts
via vancouversun.com
Despite the rats, roaches and clogged toilets at decaying rooming houses and hotels in Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside, activists and experts say they provide necessary affordable housing to the poorest people who would otherwise be pushed onto the streets.
The Balmoral Hotel recently became the focus of the housing crisis in the neighbourhood when the city issued an evacuation notice for about 143 tenants after it determined the building is at risk of collapse.

A B.C. NDP minority government will feel the crack of the whip
via vancouversun.com
Gerard Janssen remembers the day then-premier Glen Clark was left pounding on a locked door after arriving late for a vote in the B.C. legislature.
Clark’s blunder in May 1997 nearly lost the government the vote. Janssen, the party whip, punished the New Democrat premier with four nights of house duty and a cancelled trip to New York.
Not even the most powerful person in provincial politics was above sanction by Janssen, who as whip ensured politicians were in the house when they needed to -
Youth dominate street beat in crushing Abbotsford's fun Police Challenge Run
via vancouversun.com
ABBOTSFORD — Bob Rich once told a breakfast crowd in this patch of Fraser Valley pasture that “crime is toast.”
Posing for pictures before Saturday’s 27th annual Abbotsford Police Challenge Run, the chief constable also joked that anyone trying to pass him in the morning 5K would be, too.
So, at about the 1K mark, as we shuffled past Rich and the police torch-carrying Callun Hay, the chief blurted: “Hey Gord, the back of your shirt is on fire!”

Buyer beware: Duty-free shopping whammy
via vancouversun.com
I don’t usually buy duty-free anything in airports, thinking it’s usually more hassle than it’s worth and the supposed bargains often don’t turn out to be bargains.
So it was a bit of a shock when, after I finally relented and brought some Carlos 1 brandy at one airport duty free shop in Europe, it was soon seized by customs officials at another airport.
Falsely believing the boxed bottle of Carlos 1 brandy was safely tucked into a World Duty Free shopping bag, we were tr -

Father's Day gift guide: Give the gift of good grooming
via vancouversun.com
It’s almost Father’s Day, so, the big question becomes: what are you going to buy dad?
While the items on his wish list likely include, oh, a shiny new John Deer ride-on lawn mower, an even-shinier Omega watch, a vintage cab sauv (or a delicious IPA) and a tasty meal centred around a perfectly marbled steak, there are a few more personal presents to give him this year.
Rather than gift an old go-to, why not treat pops to something a little more, shall w -
Five Things to Know: Langley shooting, Vancouver man gets skateboarding ticket

There was a shooting in Langley Friday night, a Vancouver man got a $600 ticket because his skateboard can go on its own, and two protest marches collided on Granville Street. Here are five things you need to know:
Shooting in parking lot of Langley restaurant

Letters: Reducing natural-gas use is a good thing
via vancouversun.com
Re: We’re not selling Hawaii’s weather: Canada’s economic advantage is in resources, Opinion, June 2.
Mark Milke says he agrees that reducing carbon pollution is important, but uses the majority of his opinion piece to attack the businesses, organizations and governments trying to solve the problem. The City of Vancouver’s green-building policies were one of his targets and he misses the mark by a wide margin.
Those policies will reduce natural-gas use, and that’s a -
Editorial: Mobility pricing is on the table
via vancouversun.com
In 2008, TransLink and Metro Vancouver undertook a consultation process that consisted of 60 presentations in which 2,700 participants provided feedback, two public-opinion surveys that tapped 9,000 Metro residents and an online poll that drew thousands more. The results showed support for some system of road-pricing, a policy that subsequently became one of the Mayors Council on Regional Transportation recommendations to raise revenue and reduce congestion.
However, the mayors lumped it in with -

Hikers rescued after getting stranded on Coquitlam's Eagle Mountain
via vancouversun.com
Two hikers have been rescued after getting stranded near the summit of Eagle Mountain, also known as Mt. Beautiful, north of Coquitlam.
According to Michael Coyle of Coquitlam Search and Rescue (SAR), the hikers called for help shortly after reaching the peak, when the trek back down the mountain became too dangerous.
“What we think happened is they went up, they got into the snow, and they proceeded over the summit,” he said, “and as they were going down the other side it got -
Jeff Paterson: Blink, and your shot at the Stanley Cup is gone
via vancouversun.com
A tweet from hockey writer and statistical analyst Tyler Dellow earlier in the week got me thinking. Dellow posted to social media: “Good way to realize how hard it is to get to the final is to go back and look at a team that lost and count the players who get another shot.” I decided to take him up on that offer and examine the post-season histories of the 20 players in uniform for the Vancouver Canucks on the night of June 15, 2011.

Vancouver protest marches collide on Granville Street
via vancouversun.com
Worlds collided in Vancouver on Saturday when two protest marches nearly did the same.
The Red Umbrella March for Sex Work Solidarity, now in its fifth year, had some competition this time out, as another protest, The Vancouver March to Close All Slaughterhouses, walked a similar route at the same time. The two groups met on Granville Street on Saturday, where police suddenly found themselves trying to manage a traffic jam of causes.

Advocates ask how B.C. could house Balmoral residents within a week, but others wait years
via vancouversun.com
Advocates for B.C.’s homeless are wondering how B.C. Housing almost immediately found homes for residents being evacuated from a Vancouver SRO despite an escalating homeless crisis.
Friday, the City of Vancouver said it had worked with B.C. Housing to line up 131 units for the displaced residents of the Balmoral Hotel, who were given an evacuation notice a week before. Residents were told they would need to leave the building by Monday.
For decades, conditions at the Balmoral have deterior -
Vancouver man's first ride on electric skateboard ends with $600 ticket
via vancouversun.com
A Vancouver man is “flabbergasted” after his first ride on his new, motorized longboard ended with a $598 fine.
Daniel Dahlberg, 25, was on his way to work, riding a Boosted Board v2 that he’d purchased just two days earlier from West 4th Avenue’s Boarder Labs. After rolling down a hill and coming to a stop at 3rd Avenue and Maple in Kitsilano, a Vancouver police officer on a motorcycle pulled him over, then wrote him a ticket.

Quesnel mayor says political uncertainty creating problems
via vancouversun.com
QUESNEL — The mayor of Quesnel says political uncertainty in B.C. is hurting resource-dependent communities.
Bob Simpson says forestry companies in the Quesnel-area are awaiting determination of their annual allowable cut to learn how much they can harvest.
He says B.C.’s chief forester won’t be issuing those figures until a new government and a new forests minister are in place, and the lack of detail about the softwood lumber agreement is compounding the anxiety.

‘Inevitable’ demise for many manufactured homes in Surrey
via vancouversun.com
Will manufactured homes and trailers become a thing of the past in Surrey?
Along Surrey’s King George Boulevard, the city estimates there’s more than 1,000 of these homes. But with light rail planned along the major artery, will they remain?
Surrey’s Community Planning Manager Don Luymes predicted many will fall.
“As the city grows and transit investments are made along King George, it’s probably inevitable that many of these sites will be redevelopment candidates,& -
