Alex Simons, 21, of Kamloops and Sidney Robillard, 24, of Lethbridge, Alberta, were expected to arrive in Kamloops at 4 p.m. Thursday.
Their Piper Warrior aircraft, call letters C-GDTK, left Cranbrook around 3 p.m. that da -
Union Gospel Mission wilderness program helps men overcome addiction
via vancouversun.com
GARIBALDI PROVINCIAL PARK — Looking out on Cheakamus Lake, Tom Sauls recalls how he would often stand at Crab Park in Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside and gaze north at the mountains, dreaming of someday escaping homelessness and addiction to find refuge in the wilderness.
Sauls, 57, would take swigs of strong beer beneath the stars and picture himself climbing the green hills to look down upon the glimmering city. In his mind, Burrard Inlet would finally separate him from the shouting -

Weekend Poll: Are you prepared to care for your aging parents?
via vancouversun.com
These are the bruises left on Patricia Craven’s wrists that her son alleges came from being forcibly restrained by hospital security at St. Paul’s Hospital on Monday.
This week, we heard from Aaron Craven, a local Vancouver man whose mom was admitted to St. Paul’s Hospital this week to stabilize her Alzheimer’s medication.
The treatment she received, however, may have been less than ideal. Craven alleges hospital security restrained her and stripped her naked after she be -
Makeover: Gearing up for summer
via vancouversun.com
Diane Sorochuk is a 23-year-old teacher and vice principal. She is gearing up for a trip and wanted style update for summer.
Diane has medium textured and slightly wavy hair. It was previously lightened and she is ready to go little brighter for the summer. To lighten her overall colour, I applied very fine weave-foil highlights round her hairline and did some customized hair painting for a ribbonlike colour effect. To colour balance her highlights, I used a warm-golden blond tone to compliment -

Westbank's Joyce to bring a striking design to its neighbourhood
via vancouversun.com
A planned 30-storey tower next to Vancouver’s Joyce-Collingwood SkyTrain station will feature ways of accommodating families that are sure to be high profile — quite literally.
Instead of penthouse units, the top floor of Westbank’s striking Joyce highrise will be a public space for residents. The “rooftop learning and activity lounge,” as Westbank calls it, will include a library space, a music room and private study rooms that will include a tutor who will come in -
The Bowker Collection a nod to its Oak Bay neighbourhood
via vancouversun.com
It’s back to the future for the Bowker Collection, Abstract Developments’ new project in Oak Bay, one of Western Canada’s oldest municipalities.
The Bowker Collection’s rusticated brick facade is a nod to the historic neighbourhood, while the solar-ready building and an electric car for residents are forward-looking elements of the four-storey development, the first residential multi-family mixed use project approved by the District of Oak Bay in more than a decade.

Victoria actor Emily Piggford being rewarded for her love of work
via vancouversun.com
Victoria actor Emily Piggford first came to attention with her work in Impulse Theatre. The movement-based performance company known for site specific works was started by her former classmate Andrew Barrett. She toured Toronto with the company for the Summerworks Festival five and a half years ago. At the urging of her agent, she stuck around. It was a good move, and she hastily set about establishing a busy career.
Piggford has gone on to work in such varied series as Netflix’s Eli Roth- -
The Home Front: Home furnishings to match the beautiful outdoors
via vancouversun.com
It’s hard to beat nature when it comes to beauty, but some designers are doing a pretty good job at complementing it through home decor and furnishings that accessorize outdoor living and entertaining.
The Sun caught up with two designers whose products encourage us to spend more time in our backyards, on our porches and patios.
Sandy Chilewich launched her innovative textiles company, Chilewich, in 2000, believing the woven vinyl material traditionally used for outdoor furniture upholster -
Style Q&A: Arc’teryx sets up shop on Burrard Street
via vancouversun.com
Vancouver has long been a mecca of outdoor beauty, outdoor adventure – and outdoor clothing.
And one brand that’s boosting the locale’s latter element is Arc’teryx. The North Vancouver-based business has been at the forefront of technical outwear and apparel design since its start in 1989. Now, they’re set to expand their foothold in their hometown with a new location on Burrard Street.
Megan Cheesbrough, the brand’s director of global retail chatted wit -
Opinion: Cetaceans do not belong in aquariums
via vancouversun.com
It is perfectly legitimate to debate the ongoing relevance of established democratic institutions, and I — as an elected Vancouver park board commissioner — welcome constructive criticism of our deliberations and decisions.
To suggest, however, as The Vancouver Sun has done in a recent editorial, that the park board be abolished because of its recent vote to expand the ban on displaying cetaceans in Stanley Park is to ignore mounting public, scientific and ethical considerations.

Bonnie Raitt
June 19, 8 p.m. | Queen Elizabeth Theatre
Tickets and info: From $79.50 at Ticketmaster.caBonnie Raitt wants to set the record straight. It seems somewhat unnecessary. When you have 10 Grammy Awards lined up in a row on your mantle and your most recent album Dig In Deep debuted at #10 on the Billboard Album Charts, does it matter if you get called a blues woman, folk rocker or roots artist or not?
“My thing is probably as much R&B as it is blues or rock ‘n’ rol -

Public services need public scrutiny to protect public interest
via vancouversun.com
The federal government’s new infrastructure bank has become increasingly controversial over the last few months. Studies have suggested the bank’s projects will be expensive and slow to advance. The high-priced developments will likely be out of range for all but the largest municipalities.
However, little attention has been paid so far to what is perhaps the biggest reason for controversy: The lack of public transparency about the public-private partnerships the bank will support.

Opinion: Stop Victoria spewing sewage into sea
via vancouversun.com
Green party Leader Andrew Weaver is trying to shut down the wrong pipeline. He laments the potential environmental threat of the proposed Kinder Morgan pipeline while right on his doorstep the City of Victoria actually allows millions of tonnes of raw sewage to be pumped into the sea.
Victoria pumps the equivalent of a tankerload of raw sewage into the ocean on a daily basis and this has been going on for decades. Where has Weaver been on this issue? Where are all the Green protesters? Why has t -
Opinion: Farmland speculation: The buck stops with municipal politicians
via vancouversun.com
In his May 26 article, Postmedia reporter Sam Cooper noted that the B.C. government’s decision to exempt farmland from the 15-per-cent foreign buyers tax is fuelling runaway speculation on property in the Agricultural Land Reserve.
He also noted that several other provincially sponsored tax breaks have been contributing to an agricultural land rush in the Metro Vancouver area — lower property taxes on farmland that meets minimal production levels, a 50-per-cent break on school and tr -
Canada 150: Dan George, a North Shore native chief who became a Hollywood star
