Seventeen dogs described by the B.C. SPCA as “badly neglected” have been removed from a breeder in the Cowichan Valley.
Fifteen of the dogs are silky terriers — 10 females and five males, aged from one to nine years old — and two are adult German shepherds. The dogs are now living in foster care and some require dental attention, but they’ll eventually be put-up for adoption.
According to a news release from the SPCA, “the dogs were in poor condition, with bad

via vancouversun.com
Premier Christy Clark has fired back at the B.C. NDP and the B.C. Greens over their position on Site C in a pair of nearly identical letters defending her party’s decision to approve the project.
The B.C. Liberal leader’s letters are in response to one sent by B.C. NDP Leader John Horgan last week to the head of B.C. Hydro.
Clark’s letter begins: “I appreciate being copied on your correspondence to BC Hydro CEO Jessica McDonald with respect to current and future plan -
Hiking the West Highland Way
via vancouversun.com
The spirit of Rob Roy MacGregor was palpable as we gazed over the highlands that he roamed and did battle with the English from some 300 years ago. Although history has treated him kindly, he was in fact a rogue who was lucky to escape the noose, but now he lives on in Scottish history as a Gaelic Robin Hood.
I was part of a group on a guided walking tour of the West Highland Way, which stretches from Milngavie (pronounced Mal-guy) just outside Glasgow to Fort William almost due North. The 96 mi -

“Canada’s 150th anniversary is an important celebration, and Hermés wanted to honour this milestone,” Jennifer Carter, the president and Chief Executive Officer of Hermès Canada, says. & -

Ian Mulgrew: Province's top appeal court judges now seized with medicare challenge
via vancouversun.com
The constitutional litigation over B.C.’s medicare law has moved into the province’s highest court with an appeal that Victoria fears could create havoc in the trial courts.
While the civil trial is adjourned in B.C. Supreme Court until at least Sept. 5 to resolve procedural issues, the B.C. Court of Appeal has been asked to reconsider its normal practice and overturn some of the judge’s rulings within the proceedings.
B.C. government lawyer Jonathan Penner vehemently opposed t -

via vancouversun.com
Four-year-old Wesley Fernandes doesn’t have to be asked twice which is his favourite among animals that his grandpa has carved out of shrubs and hedges.
“T-Rex! Over there!” Wesley points excitedly.
Over the past decade, Manuel Fernandes has turned his Burnaby yard into a topiary jungle. One of two: He’s done the same thing at his place in Osoyoos, only on a smaller scale.
“It’s like one was not enough work, I had to have two,” Fernandes said.

Opinion: Provincial power on pipelines comes from being an Indigenous ally
via vancouversun.com
A key policy commitment in the B.C. NDP and Green Party agreement is to “immediately employ every tool available to stop the expansion of the Kinder Morgan pipeline.” There has been much buzz about this commitment debating what the province constitutionally can and cannot do. Alberta Premier Rachel Notley has stated that B.C. has no tools to overturn or block the federal government’s approval of the project. Indeed, the Trans Mountain Pipeline is a federal undertaking, which gi -
REAL SCOOP: Witnesses saw SUV speeding near Bacon shooting

The big development at the Kelowna trial for the accused killers of Jonathan Bacon was that the judge presiding over the case dismissed the defence application to throw out the charges.
Justice Allan Betton hasn’t provided his reasons yet, but will at a later date. That means the trial will continue as scheduled.
The Crown entered a new phase in its case. After a week of witnesses who were at or near the Delta Grand at the time of the shooting, witnesses Monday described seeing an SUV spee -

Dan Fumano: Vancouver's privately owned single room occupancy hotels cause lion's share of problems
via vancouversun.com
When the City of Vancouver ordered the evacuation of the Balmoral Hotel last Friday, telling 150 residents they must vacate within 10 days due to “imminent danger” in the century-old building, it left many people wondering how things could have gotten so bad.
The Balmoral, the city said, was in such a state of disrepair that tenants needed to vacate to allow repairs to “ensure that the building does not collapse.”
The Balmoral is far from the only problematic single-room -

Vaughn Palmer: Expect the speaker to be busy taking sides in the political fray
via vancouversun.com
VICTORIA — On an otherwise routine day in the B.C. legislature in the spring of 1980, the Opposition New Democratic Party sprang a trap on the Social Credit government of then-Premier Bill Bennett.
A year earlier, Bennett was elected to a second term by less than two points in the popular vote and five in the seat count, one of the thinnest margins in modern times before this year.

Five things about the northeast False Creek plan to remove the viaducts
via vancouversun.com
With the City of Vancouver’s unveiling of conceptual plans concerning a new look for northeast False Creek, here are five things to know:
A Nov. 18, 1970, artist’s conception of the Georgia viaduct at the beginning of construction.

Beyond all the planned green space, this is clearly the most notable item in the plan. City engineers insist the new plan, which includes a new Georgia Street extension down from the height of land by Beatty Street down to Pacific Boulevar -

Vancouver father, son to cycle in Europe for today’s warriors, yesterday’s heroes
via vancouversun.com
It’s not the physical strain of cycling 600 kilometres from England to France that has Larry and Steve Osachoff worried.
That’s the easy part.
It’s the emotional weight of visiting the places where thousands of Canadians gave their lives during the First World War that has the Vancouver father-son duo nervous to begin their journey.
“I have thought a lot about it, and honestly? I think it will be utterly heart-wrenching,” said Larry.

Salt Spring residents give thumbs down to RCMP crackdown
via vancouversun.com
Salt Spring Island residents are in a spat with members of their local RCMP detachment who they say are cracking down on a key component of their island culture — hitchhiking.
For decades, locals have relied on the kindness of one another to get from place-to-place on the large island.
So common is hitchhiking that in one location, rather than using their thumbs, prospective riders have taken to using handmade wooden signs painted with destination names to flag passing drivers.

Lions Bay is a small village with a big parking problem.
That’s why the municipality, which straddles the Sea-to-Sky Highway about 13 kilometres north of West Vancouver, is soliciting proposals for a pay parking pilot project at three of the most popular areas for summer visitors.
“Social media has led to any number of places that were only known to the locals to be discovered,” said Lions Bay Mayor Karl Buhr. “On a good day, it’s a zoo.”

Judge dismisses application to throw out charges in Bacon murder case
via vancouversun.com
KELOWNA — Jamie Farquhar was on his way home from a job on Aug. 14, 2011 when he noticed an SUV approaching him rapidly in his rear-view mirror.
He was so concerned about how the occupants of the Ford were driving that he tried to memorize the time and the plate number so he could call police later, he testified in B.C. Supreme Court Monday.
Farquhar was one of a series of witnesses who testified about the vehicle that the Crown alleges was used by the killers of Jonathan Bacon to flee the -
Daphne Bramham: Christy Clark raises much and donates little
via vancouversun.com
There’s a glaring irony in the phrase “pay-to-play” when it comes to B.C. politics. While developers, oil companies, banks, unions and lobbyists clearly got the memo, B.C.’s fundraiser in chief apparently didn’t.
Christy Clark helped raise $7.6 million for the B.C. Liberals in 2016. But the premier and party leader didn’t contribute a dollar of that nor has she made any donations this year, according to her party’s weekly online disclosures.
In fact, Cla -
Education funding and teacher hiring marred by government uncertainty
via vancouversun.com
VICTORIA — B.C.’s ambitious plan to hire more than 2,600 new teachers is being hampered by a lack of money, bureaucratic hang-ups and the political uncertainty over who will form the next government, say teachers and trustees.
The Ministry of Education has been in “caretaker” mode since the election campaign began in April, meaning staff are in a holding pattern. That has dragged on because an accord between the NDP and Greens has given those parties the votes to topple L -
Another half-metre added to expected high-water mark on Okanagan Lake
via vancouversun.com
KELOWNA — The feasibility of increasing the drainage capacity of Okanagan Lake should be examined once the current flood risk passes, Kelowna Mayor Colin Basran says.
The 60-year-old drainage system can lower the level of the lake by 11 centimetres a week, a rate that isn’t sufficient to avert the prospect of serious flooding in the next 10 days along many areas of the city’s shoreline.
All of City Park could be under water, to varying depths, with flooding also aff -

Wildfire near Quesnel out of control
via vancouversun.com
The B.C. Wildfire Service says crews are responding to a wildfire about five kilometres south of Pantage Lake and 40 kilometres northwest of Quesnel.
Thirty-seven firefighters are working to establish control lines around the perimeter of the 50-hectare fire, which is currently classified as being out of control.
Officials say crews began fighting the fire Sunday and are now being supported by airtankers, a helicopter and heavy equipment.
The cause of the fire is under investigation. -
College of Veterinarians of B.C. apologizes to Indo-Canadian colleagues
via vancouversun.com
The regulatory agency for veterinarians in B.C. has dropped a legal challenge to a finding that its investigation of Indo-Canadian vets was racially motivated and has issued an apology to all of the complainants involved in the rancorous dispute.
On Monday, the College of Veterinarians of B.C. announced that it would not pursue a judicial review of an October 2015 decision of the Human Rights Tribunal of B.C. that found the college had engaged in discrimination against a number of Indo-Canadian -
Ben Kuzma: Can Canucks fill void if they deal Chris Tanev?
via vancouversun.com
Talk is cheap, but the asking price isn’t.
Vancouver Canucks general manager Jim Benning will inquire about trading for the third-overall selection in the 2017 National Hockey League draft. The Dallas Stars are seeking an impact right-shot defensive defenceman capable of logging as many as 24 minutes a night to part with the pick.
Chris Tanev checks all the desirable boxes, and that’s where it gets tricky.
Chris Tanev would make any team better in the defensive zone.
If Benning wants -
