Syrian refugee finds a job and belonging at Victoria café
via vancouversun.com
A few weeks after 19-year-old Rateb started working at Zazu Cafe in downtown Victoria, he put a Syrian soup, shurbat addes, on the menu. Selling the red lentil soup, spiced with cumin, to customers was a small way of tying his old life in Syria to his new one in Canada.
Rateb has been working part-time at the Blanshard Street café since March. The café’s owner, Tracey Higgins, is not just Rateb’s boss — right now, she’s the closest thing he has to a mother. -

Chuck Berry CHUCK (Dualtone)
On his final recording, the late legendary architect of rock n’ roll does what he’s always done. It would be more than a little late in the game for him to mix up the stripped down, bluesy riffing that is the foundation of some of the most beloved songs of all time.
Yet what instantly strikes you about his first new recording since 1979s Rock It is just how incredibly vital his signature boogie remains. From the opening track, Wonderful Woman, to the -

Oliver Castillo in Hand to God.
Don’t be fooled by the Arts Club’s publicity for Hand to God. They’re advertising the play as “an irreverent comedy,” with a poster of a cute little devilish hand puppet.
It’s a comedy all right, but about as dark as they come. And “irreverent” is an enormous understatement. Hand to God is demonic. It’ -

She says future hearings could be different, depending on the needs of the community, and it takes -
Abbotsford police believe they've nabbed the tailgate bandit
via vancouversun.com
Abbotsford police are hoping a recent arrest will help curb a rash of tailgate thievery in the Fraser Valley.
Since 2016, police have received reports of more than 80 tailgates stolen from newer model trucks in Abbotsford, Mission, Chilliwack and Langley.
Police say the cost of replacing a single tailgate can total thousands of dollars.
David Ahner, 38, was arrested in connection with the theft of two 2016 Ford F350 tailgates from Langley and one 2014 Ford F350 tailgate from Abbotsford.

Vancouver School Board to make leadership announcement today

The Vancouver School Board has called a press conference for 10:30 a.m. Monday to make an “announcement regarding leadership at the school district.”
In October, B.C. Education Minister Mike Bernier fired all nine elected Vancouver School Board trustees and appointed former Delta School District superintendent Dianne Turner as the official trustee.
Bernier dismissed the board for failing to pass a balanced budget.

Police in the suburban Victoria municipality say both incidents happened Sunday near wooded areas close to the University of Victoria.

Vancouver homeowners have less than a month to find renters to fill their vacant homes in the city – or they will be subject to a new empty home tax.

Condolences pour in for B.C. victim of London terror attack

Messages of sorrow and condolence have been pouring in following the death of a B.C. woman who was killed in Saturday’s terror attack in the heart of London.
Christine Archibald, 30, was enjoying a warm spring night with her fiance, Tyler Ferguson, when she was struck by a speeding van that plowed into people strolling on London Bridge.

Rob Shaw: Christy Clark eyes narrow road to redemption
via vancouversun.com
VICTORIA — Christy Clark is entering her dying days as B.C.’s 35th premier. Her once-mighty Liberal government will soon be skulking off to the cramped and unglamorous offices of the official Opposition.
It’s going to be an easy time to kick Clark when she’s down. And maybe she and the Liberals deserve it. But it would be a mistake to count her out for good, just yet.
There’s still a possible road to redemption for Clark. And she’s got about a year to pull it -

The mayor and city council need to take action now and stop “assessing” the situation. You don’t need anyone else to tell you that the Sahotas -
