WILLIAMS LAKE, B.C. — The Tsilhqot’in Nation is commending the Law Society of British Columbia for removing the statue of a controversial, historic judge from its lobby.
The society previous featured the statue of Judge Matthew Begbie, who wrongfully convicted six Tsilhqot’in War Chiefs of murder in 1864, sentencing them to death by hanging.
The law society announced in April that it would remove the statue that is a negative symbol of the province’s colonial past and rep

Central Saanich woman uses ruse to help nab man wanted for fraud in four provinces
via vancouversun.com
A ruse concocted by a Central Saanich woman helped police nab a man who allegedly bilked her out of almost $35,000 and was wanted for fraud in four provinces.
The man, who had evaded police for years, was arrested in Calgary on May 26, thanks to the 29-year-old mother of two. The woman, who did not want her name used, bought movie tickets for the man, then tipped off police so they could arrest him in his theatre seat.
The woman first met the man in October on the online dating website Plenty of -
Sinkhole appears at entrance to Vancouver's Granville Island, vehicle access closed
via vancouversun.com
Vehicle access into Granville Island was closed Saturday morning after a sinkhole appeared at the entrance way.
The closure was initially restricted to just inbound vehicles but soon expanded to halt all inbound and outbound vehicle traffic while Vancouver city crews inspected the damage to the roadway.
Outbound vehicles were slowly being allowed off the island shortly after noon when the roadway was partially re-opened, but those heading to Granville Island are still advised to walk or cycle.

West End landmark's days are numbered
via vancouversun.com
If you want to be on Cloud 9, you only have until Sept. 30.
That is the last day for the revolving restaurant on the 42nd floor of the Empire Landmark Hotel, which is slated to come down for a new condo development.
Initially, the plan for the block-long site at 1400 Robson was for two towers, one 28 stories, the other 30. The design by Musson Cattel Mackey architects was for a mixed-use project with 223 market condos, 57 social housing units and two floors of offices and retail at ground level. -
Jeff Paterson: Who's the No. 1 goalie? It's not Travis Green's No. 1 priority
via vancouversun.com
It will surely work its way up his list, but right now Travis Green claims the Vancouver Canucks’ goaltending situation isn’t a priority.
When reached late this week, the new head coach of the hockey club was worrying far more about his teenage daughter’s high school graduation and plans for furthering her education in the fall. And when that isn’t top of mind, Green says he’s busy poring over video of the team he has inherited and is working diligently to finalize -
Weekend Poll: What should be the next step for the Balmoral Hotel?
via vancouversun.com
On Friday, City of Vancouver officials announced it had ordered tenants out of the “disgusting” Balmoral Hotel in the Downtown Eastside and for the landlords to begin immediate repairs.
The Balmoral is owned by the infamous Sahota family. They also own the nearby Regent, Astoria and Cobalt single-room occupancy hotels. Their real estate holding company, Triville Enterprises, is worth more than $130 million, according to B.C. Assessment.

Makeover: Creating a sophisticated and sultry evening look
via vancouversun.com
Wedding season is in full swing and this week I wanted to show you a step-by-step tutorial on how to create a sophisticated and sultry evening look by using neutral eyeshadow, false lashes and a nude lip. I started by evening out my complexion with a medium coverage foundation. I applied bronzer to contour my face and enhance my facial features and highlighted the high points of my face using a skin illuminator.Step 1

Canada 150: Jack Munro, old-school union boss
via vancouversun.com
To mark Canada’s 150th birthday, we are counting down to Canada Day with profiles of 150 noteworthy British Columbians.
At six-foot-five and 265 pounds, long-time International Woodworkers of America leader Jack Munro seemed as big and imposing as the mighty firs and cedars his members chopped down.
He had a temperament to match. Blunt-spoken and given to world-class bursts of profanity, he couldn’t care less if he offended people — his job was to defend his members.
Hence his -

'Bloodbath': Vancouver on pace to hit 1,400 overdose deaths by year's end

Vancouver mayor Gregor Robertson on Friday called on the “new B.C. government” to deal with B.C.’s opioid “bloodbath”.
“The near-record number of drug overdose deaths in the fentanyl crisis is a bloodbath in all corners of Vancouver with no end in sight,” Robertson said in a statement. “With a new B.C. government there’s now some hope for getting people desperately needed treatment options swiftly and without stigma.”

This Week in History: 1909 The Alaska-Yukon-Pacific Exposition opens in Seattle
via vancouversun.com
The 1962 World’s Fair in Seattle is fondly remembered by many Vancouverites. Its legacy can still be felt in Emerald City icons like Seattle Centre, the Space Needle and the Monorail.
But it wasn’t Seattle’s first World’s Fair. That was the Alaska-Yukon-Pacific Exposition, which ran from June 1 to Oct. 16 1909 on the University of Washington campus.
The A-Y-P was initially proposed for 1907, as a 10th anniversary celebration of the Klondike Gold Rush. Seattle had pro -

Lakeside Cultus Lake takes a location that 'has everything'

Jeff Vertes’ summers as a child are a golden memory.
He remembers well how his family would set up camp in an RV on the beach at Cultus Lake and spend sunny summer days splashing around in the surprisingly warm water.
What he couldn’t have known then was that a few decades later, he would be the owner of condominium home at Cultus Lake, looking forward to the same summer fun with his own children. And it would be within eyeshot of where he spent his own summers as a kid.

Canada must use latest science to shrink oil and gas industry’s methane pollution
via vancouversun.com
Last Thursday, the federal government announced draft regulations to shrink methane and air pollution, and reduce energy waste from Canada’s oil and gas industry. Ottawa’s goal is to reduce methane emissions from the oil and gas industry by 40-45 per cent by 2025.
This is welcome news for a number of reasons.
First, methane is a powerful global warming pollutant — 84 times more potent than carbon dioxide over a 20-year period. Methane’s ability to destabilize the cli -

We're not selling Hawaii's weather: Canada's economic advantage is in resources
via vancouversun.com
As a measure of how unhinged Canada’s national discussion has become on natural resource extraction, consider this parallel: Imagine if Hawaii’s state and local governments actively dampened their main industry with new and punitive taxes on tourists. Ponder if island business leaders demanded that Hawaii develop a “new economy,” perhaps manufacturing. And ask yourself what you’d think of pressure groups that disparaged surfing, labelling it “so yesterday -
Opinion: More women on boards is good for business

In 2014, the federal government’s Advisory Council for Promoting Women on Boards recommended as a “reasonable national goal” that 30 per cent of corporate board positions be filled by women by 2019, with gender balance being the longer-term aim.
The advisory council reported that only 10.1 per cent of seats on Canadian boards in 2012 were held by women. By 2016, according to data collected by securities regulators across Canada, the number had risen to just 12 per cent.

Opinion: Fast food? Just say no
via vancouversun.com
Why do so many people eat at McDonald’s or Burger King or Wendy’s or Fatburger or Kentucky Fried Chicken or — sorry, Canada — Tim Hortons?
Seriously, I don’t get it. The occasional doughnut at Hortons is fine as a treat, but I’m talking about the main-meal courses — ‘edible food-like substances’ they’ve been called — that are served up by these fast-food giants.
I haven’t eaten in any of the major fa -
Letters: Courts should know accused's criminal record
via vancouversun.com
A common sense piece of legislation, Bill S-217, commonly referred to as Wynn’s Law, is on the brink of defeat by sheeplike Trudeau Liberal MPs putting political fealty ahead of public and police safety.
Wynn’s Law would require prosecutors to make sure the court is made aware of a bail applicant’s criminal record before granting bail.
The catalyst for the bill was the 2015 murder of RCMP Const. David Wynn by a career criminal out on bail. The killer had been granted bail -
Editorial: An NDP government on tenterhooks
via vancouversun.com
B.C. Premier Christy Clark is right to let the inevitable defeat of her Liberal government play out in the legislature. Handing the keys to NDP Leader John Horgan in a backroom somewhere would not be in keeping with our parliamentary tradition. Our elected representatives should bear the responsibility of bringing a government down by a vote in the legislature.
The Liberal party won the most votes of any single party and earned the right to govern, even if only for a few weeks. The Clark g -
The Happenings: Three things to do in Vancouver this weekend
via vancouversun.com
Looking for something to do in Metro Vancouver? Here are three suggestions for the first weekend of June.
3rd Annual Vancouver Facial Hair Competition
It’s a flippin’ beard contest! The Vancouver Facial Hair Club, which apparently exists, is holding their third annual beard-off at the Lamplighter in Gastown. The event is in support of HeadsUpGuys, a resource for supporting men in their fight against depression.
There are several categories being judged (by a panel that includes San F -
With Balmoral's evacuation, no one sure where to go or what to do
via vancouversun.com
Following reports of squalid, dangerous, “Third World” conditions at the Balmoral Hotel, a reporter visited the East Hastings landmark, asked to speak with the owners, and was rebuffed.
“I am not surprised, given city hall efforts to force the establishment to clean up or shut down,” wrote Larry Pynn in The Vancouver Sun.
That was in 1992.
A quarter century later, on Friday morning, came the latest step in city hall’s efforts to force owners to clean up the Balmoral -
Life in the Balmoral: floods, fights and rats
via vancouversun.com
The sidewalk outside the Balmoral Hotel was a busy place Friday, as residents scurried in and out trying to figure out what was happening with Vancouver’s most notorious low-rent hotel.
Kevin Brown told the story of how he’d gone from working on the oil rigs in northern Alberta to falling under cocaine’s spell and winding up in a tiny room where he and his wife pay $850 per month.
Suddenly he heard something behind the hotel door.
“Oh, he’s going to go beat that guy -
Fab 5: Let the sun shine

Have you heard? Besides being harmful to our eyes, a few studies have now shown that blue light — as in, the light that our cellphones emit — may also give off infrared radiation, which could have harmful, aging effects on the skin. Eek! The verdict’s still out on the exact impact of blue light, but it’s more reason than ever to make sure you’re well-armed with a good SPF. Here are five of our must-haves.

A B.C. Supreme Court judge has barred a woman from using an ultrasonic device to clean dogs’ and cats’ teeth except under the supervision of a veterinarian.
The College of Veterinarians of B.C. filed a petition asking that Corinne Henderson be permanently banned from performing dental hygiene and other services provided by qualified individuals.

Expert says columnist suggestion Alberta shut fuel pipeline to B.C. 'pretty ruinous'
via vancouversun.com
If British Columbia’s government-in-waiting wants to obstruct Kinder Morgan’s Trans Mountain pipeline expansion, Alberta might retaliate by halting fuel flows to B.C. on the existing Trans Mountain pipeline, a Calgary newspaper columnist has suggested.
“B.C. Green Leader Andrew Weaver says Alberta should ‘get with the program’ and move away from oil and gas,” writes Calgary Herald columnist Don Braid.

via vancouversun.com
VICTORIA — While wheels were set in motion this week for transition to a new government, it is still not clear when and how that will take place.
Premier Christy Clark, in bowing to the inevitable, promised to submit to a confidence vote in the legislature “as quickly as possible.”
NDP Leader John Horgan and Green Leader Andrew Weaver, in acknowledging the premier’s right to test the house before resigning, expressed hope that she would proceed “in a timely man -
Lawyer for man accused of shooting, dismembering West Van businessman wants confession ruled inadmissible
via vancouversun.com
A lawyer for a man accused of fatally shooting and then dismembering a West Vancouver businessman is arguing that statements his client made to police were not given voluntarily.
Ian Donaldson says a number of factors contributed to the confession of Li Zhao being involuntary, including that he was cold and hungry in the Vancouver city jail before the police interview.
“I’m not saying that freezing or starving him was deliberate,” Donaldson told B.C. Supreme Court Justice Teren -
B.C. pipeline showdown: Will Kinder Morgan expansion get built?
via vancouversun.com
British Columbia appears headed for a showdown with Ottawa and others, including Alberta, over Kinder Morgan’s $7.4-billion Trans Mountain oil pipeline expansion.
The Houston, Texas-based company seems to have everything in place to proceed, including approval from the National Energy Board, the backing of Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and an environmental certificate from B.C.
But is it enough?
That question will be answered in the coming months, as forces that are aligned against the pro -

Vancouver bike shops aren't happy with Mobi's Stanley Park expansion
via vancouversun.com
The addition of five new Mobi bike share stations in Stanley Park is grinding the gears of some private bike rental shops in Vancouver’s West End.
“We don’t welcome it,” said Louis Kwan, who has been operating Bayshore Bicycle Rentals on Denman Street for 33 years. “We don’t want to have this type of competition. It’s David vs. Goliath, with City Hall as Goliath.”

Drug that killed New Westminster teen was MDMA not fentanyl, say police
via vancouversun.com
New Westminster police say MDMA has been linked to the overdose death of a 16-year-old girl and the hospitalization of her friend.

Brian Minter: Add flavour to your patio with vegetables in containers
via vancouversun.com
Growing vegetables successfully in containers is so easy.
It can be very productive when a few key issues are looked after, and one of the most important is the variety of veggies you choose to grow. Today there are many choices for container gardening that are adaptable to the limitations of confined space.
Although it has been a very late start this year, we still have a long gardening season ahead of us, and growing and harvesting should continue well into September and even
