Penticton man describes trying to save Jonathan Bacon after shooting
via vancouversun.com
KELOWNA — For what seemed like 20 minutes, Vaughn Smeltzer pumped the chest of a critically wounded Jonathan Bacon, desperately trying to keep him alive.
Smeltzer was nearby the Delta Grand Hotel on Aug. 14, 2011 with his young son and friend when they saw gunmen open fire.
At first he thought it was a movie being filmed. Then he realized it was real.
He told his remarkable story in B.C. Supreme Court on Thursday at the trial of three men accused of killing Bacon that day.

Don't bother giving up avocado toast, Vancouver millennials, the housing is too expensive anyway
via vancouversun.com
No matter how you slice it, the story of saving enough money to buy a home in Vancouver has turned into nothing but a dream for many.
But what about giving up a fancy daily breakfast? Might that give us a chance?
The BBC has crunched the numbers so you and I wouldn’t have to: one would have to give up 48 years worth of daily avocado toast to save enough dough to put together a down payment for a home.
Yes, that’s 17,421 days’ worth. And that’s not even to -

This is one spelling error you can’t claim on autocorrect. A school zone in Revelstoke had drivers slowing down on Tuesday, but not for the usual safety reasons.
A line painter contracted by the city had been tasked with spelling SCHOOL on the roadway in front of Revelstoke’s Columbia Park Elementary. Instead, he spelled SCOHOL — which is, of course, incorrect.
It may be time to go back to “scohol”.
If you’re wondering how an error like this even happens -
Opinion: This is Canada's time to lead the world in research
via vancouversun.com
This is Canada’s moment. Now is the time for us to lead the world in higher education, research and innovation. In an era of closing borders and closing minds, Canada’s universities are reinforcing worldwide connections to ideas, collaborations and expertise. We have the talent, commitment and networks necessary to lead.
The Advisory Panel on Federal Support for Fundamental Science recognizes this strength. In the highly anticipated report released in April, these eminent Canadi -
Opinion: B.C. joins Washington and Oregon for Orca Awareness Month
via vancouversun.com
June is Orca Awareness Month in the Pacific Northwest. Officially declared in Washington State several years, Oregon and B.C. joined unofficially last year, and it’s a good thing they did. Orcas are in serious and life-altering danger, with seven adult southern resident killer whales lost last year, including the 105-year-old matriarch known as Granny.
It’s undeniable that the waters of the Pacific Northwest are vastly different today than when Granny was born. The changes in the Sal -
Setting B.C. on course to $15 per hour minimum wage on NDP/Green government agenda
via vancouversun.com
Putting British Columbia on course to a $15 minimum wage will be part of the Green-backed NDP government-in-waiting’s agenda, a move that business groups have been wary of as much as labour organizations welcome it.
On Tuesday, the same day Ontario announced that it will become the next Canadian jurisdiction to aim for the $15 per hour mark, NDP Leader John Horgan and Green Leader Andrew Weaver unveiled their plan to follow suit.
A new government would “(immediately) establish an at- -
Don't bother giving up avocado toast, Vancouver millenials, the housing is too expensive anyway
via vancouversun.com
No matter how you slice it, the story of saving enough money to buy a home in Vancouver has turned into nothing but a dream for many.
But what about giving up a fancy daily breakfast? Might that give us a chance?
The BBC has crunched the numbers so you and I wouldn’t have to: one would have to give up 48 years worth of daily avocado toast to save enough dough to put together a down payment for a home.
Yes, that’s 17,421 days worth. And that’s not even to buy a s -
Resident upset about road planned to cut through Surrey park
via vancouversun.com
For someone who lives in an urban centre, Steven Pettigrew has an unusual view from his patio.
Trees fill the skyline, not houses. Hawks, crows, eagles and thrushes fly overhead, while coyotes and rabbits run through the brush. Pettigrew lives by Surrey’s Hawthorne Park, which he calls “a little sanctuary in the city.”
“We live right beside the forest and we see the beauty of the forest and of nature all around us. It’s an incredible park we have here,” he sai -
Vaughn Palmer: Alliance has two party heads, but one NDP brain
via vancouversun.com
VICTORIA — There was a telling moment this week when the elected members of the NDP-Green alliance gathered at the B.C. legislature for the signing ceremony to formalize their pact.
Standing on the platform, awaiting the arrival of party leaders John Horgan and Andrew Weaver, were 40 New Democrats. Surrounded in their midst were two Greens.
“See they’ve already been absorbed by the NDP,” quipped one press gallery wag.
Joking aside, the Green agenda was pretty much ov -
Surrey Six Mounties trial delayed yet again. Why? We can’t tell you
via vancouversun.com
The much-delayed trial of four Mounties charged in connection with the Surrey Six murder investigation has been adjourned again for nearly six months — but the reason for the postponement can’t be reported because the matter is covered by a publication ban.
Following numerous prior adjournments, the trial of the accused had been set to get underway before a jury in B.C. Supreme Court in Vancouver on Sept. 25, but has been moved back to March 5, 2018 after a brief court appearance by -
REAL SCOOP: Dramatic encounter before fatal shooting
via vancouversun.com
The trial of Jujhar Khun-Khun, Jason McBride and Michael Jones heard more dramatic evidence Wednesday from people who just happened to be in the area when gunman opened fire on an SUV containing gangster Jonathan Bacon.
Clearly the ordeal was traumatic for so many people. They realized they could easily have been caught in the crossfire.
Here’s my story:

Grand Forks soccer team cries foul after being booted from tournament
via vancouversun.com
A West Kootenay soccer team is crying foul after being sidelined from a tournament this week over a rule it believes unfairly impacts rural players.
Grand Forks Secondary School’s Girls A team had earned a coveted spot at this year’s B.C. provincial tournament, taking place Wednesday to Saturday.
But because of difficulty drafting the necessary 11 players to field a team — plus a few substitutes — at the season’s outset in early April, the Grade 8 to 11 girls a -
Witness to fatal stabbing outside SkyTrain station weeps as she describes attack
via vancouversun.com
A witness wept in court Wednesday as she described an incident in which her good friend was stabbed to death outside a Burnaby SkyTrain station.
Victoria Heard was testifying at the trial of Taitusi Vikilani, who has pleaded not guilty to manslaughter in the Feb. 15, 2015, killing of James Enright, 28.
She told B.C. Supreme Justice Paul Pearlman that the assault happened after she and Enright had driven from her home to the Edmonds SkyTrain station to meet a friend of hers.
After the friend arri -
