    The captains guiding Vancouver Island University Mariners basketball teams will both be sailing off into the sunset at the conclusion of the playoffs.

  • Highway 4 to be closed between Alberni and Qualicum between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m.

    Highway 4 is set to be shut down from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Feb. 25.
    Crews will be completing repairs to the shoulder and bank erosion, requiring a full closure of the highway. The closure will be between Chalet Road and the Port Alberni Summit.
    The ministry of transportation created a plan with emergency services to ensure there is a process if emergency transport is required through the closure.
    Drivers are asked to obey traffic-control personnel and plan around the closure.

    A Kelowna man is likely to face a hefty fine after being found guilty of interfering with a helicopter actioning the McDougall Creek wildfires in 2023.
    On Aug. 27, 2023, Derek Leippi was in his boat and operating a miniature drone just off the shore of Okanagan Lake Resort. Leippi was using the drone to take video of the wildfire with a focus on the damage of the blaze to the resort.

  • 1 man suspected dead in massive Fraser Lake Shopping Centre fire

    One man is suspected to have died in a blaze that tore through the Fraser Lake Shopping Centre last weekend.
    According to RCMP, officers were called to a structure fire at the Fraser Lake Inn at about 3 a.m., Sunday, Feb. 22.
