After losing all of their animals, Universal Ostrich Farm must also pay a $10,000 fine.
The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) issued the fine and violation to the Edgewood farm after it failed to report an outbreak in the approximately 400 bird herd in December of 2024.
The entire flock was ultimately killed due to the outbreak, but the farm contested the violation notice and attached fine with the Canada Agricultural Review Tribunal.

Seair Seaplanes announced it will increase the cost of tickets by $0.15 to help fund re-building kelp forests, with a matching contribution by the company.

Four backcountry skiers had their destination in sight last Saturday afternoon when a wind slab took their group for a brief but buckling slide, burying one who was quickly rescued without injury.

City of Nanaimo dog licence discount valid until end of February
Two weeks into the new year, the City of Nanaimo is reminding pet owners of the need to renew dog licences.
According to the city, valid licences are mandated for dogs four months and older, and if people buy or renew before Feb. 28, owners of spayed and neutered dogs will pay $25, while unsterilized dogs cost $50 and dogs designated as aggressive $75. After Feb. 28, prices increase to $30 for spayed and neutered, $60 for unsterilized and $90 for aggressive.

Nanaimo RCMP arrest 40-year-old for alleged indecent act, assault, on city waterfront
A Nanaimo individual is facing multiple charges following an alleged indecent act and assault on the city’s waterfront.
Nanaimo RCMP responded to a coffee house on the waterfront promenade at #8 – 90 Front St., at about noon Tuesday, Jan. 13, where a confrontation had broken out between the business manager and the individual who was allegedly destroying property, according to an RCMP press release.
