An overdose advisory was issued on Friday, as drug poisonings are reportedly increasing in Nanaimo.
Issued by Island Health on Friday, Feb. 27, this is the second drug poisoning overdose advisory over the month, after an advisory on Feb. 4.

A fundraising campaign launched in memory of Hannah Henry has raised more than $17,500 in its first two days, as friends, family and supporters work to create a lasting tribute in her name.

Fraser Lake RCMP recover body following inn fire
Fraser Lake RCMP have recovered a body from the scene of a fire that took place at the Fraser Lake Inn.
According to a press release from Feb. 27, the RCMP have completed their search of the scene of the Feb. 22 fire at the inn.
Police believe the body recovered is that of the person who was previously unaccounted for, the release says. DNA analysis is being conducted for positive identification and police are working with the BC Coroners Service as the investigation continues.

A smashed vehicle and toppled community mailboxes on Old Victoria Rd. has Nanaimo RCMP asking for dashcam footage.
The vandalism is believed to have occurred the night of Wednesday, Feb. 25, between 11 p.m. and 5 a.m., which involved several Canada Post community mailboxes torn from the cement base, and a Tesla with deep gashes to the front hood, side panels and a smashed windshield.

Balmy February breaks 3 B.C. weather records
An unseasonably warm winter has broken some records in the region.
While the normal maximum temperature for this time of year is around five degrees Celsius, both Vernon and Salmon Arm were well above that on Thursday, Feb. 26.
Salmon Arm set a new record of 15.2 C, breaking the 10.6 record set in 1932.
The mercury reached 11.7 C in Vernon, breaking the old record of 10.7 set in 2005.

When a dog needs an emergency transfusion on Vancouver Island — after a collision, internal bleeding or major surgery — the blood may come from a local donor program.

Gabriola Island, Island District RCMP team up to arrest alleged meth trafficker
A two-year multi-jurisdictional investigation has led to the arrest of a man on Gabriola Island for allegedly dealing methamphetamine.
In a press release, Gabriola Island RCMP said it, along with Island District RCMP General Investigation Section, initiated a drug trafficking investigation in the latter part of 2024, that included overt and covert tactics.
There was enough evidence gathered for an arrest warrant and on Monday, Feb. 23.

Agassiz RCMP officers have been cleared of wrongdoing in a 2025 shooting.
The Independent Investigations Office (IIO) of B.C. recently concluded their investigation of a shooting in Agassiz on June 19, 2025.
“The chief civilian director has reviewed the evidence collected by IIO investigators – including medical records, police reports and witness accounts – and has determined that there are no reasonable grounds to believe that an officer may have committed an offence,”
