A School District 23 teacher has been reprimanded by the BC Commissioner for Teacher Regulation after multiple issues of “professional misconduct”.
Kelly Jean Hettinga, a teacher in the Central Okanagan school district and former volleyball coach, is being ordered to complete a professional boundaries course after his involvements in incidents involving a student being pantsed and an argument with a parent.

Threats to Fraser Lake school unsubstantiated: RCMP
Local threats allegedly made to a local school were unsubstantiated, and there was never any danger to students or staff, according to Fraser Lake RCMP.
Police received a report of a possible threat to students and staff at Fraser Lake Elementary Secondary School in the evening on Feb. 19.
RCMP investigated the report overnight and were able to determine that the threat was unsubstantiated, and at no time were staff and students in any danger.

Xavier’s Law on dangerous driving passes second reading in legislature
Xavier’s Law passed second reading in B.C.’s legislature on Feb. 23 in a 78 to 7 vote.
The private members bill would toughen up the penalties for dangerous drivers in B.C. if it passes.
The move to change the driving laws comes after 12-year-old Xavier Rasul-Jankovics was struck and killed by a car while he was rollerblading with his family on a rural road near their home in Cobble Hill on Aug. 25, 2025.

CVRD nixes unpopular user fee proposal for yard waste drop-off
Charging user fees for dropping off residential yard and garden waste at the recycling centres in the Cowichan Valley Regional District has been taken off the table.
The board voted almost unanimously, except for North Cowichan director Bruce Findlay, not to charge for dropping off residential yard waste at the CVRD’s recycling yards at its meeting on Feb. 12.

An email changed everything for Carter Hrynyk.
The 16-year-old is heading to Madrid, Spain, in March after earning an invite to attend a weeklong academy put on by the Real Madrid Foundation. His favourite club just happens to be Real Madrid.

Highway 4 is set to be shut down from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Feb. 25.
Crews will be completing repairs to the shoulder and bank erosion, requiring a full closure of the highway. The closure will be between Chalet Road and the Port Alberni Summit.
The ministry of transportation created a plan with emergency services to ensure there is a process if emergency transport is required through the closure.
Drivers are asked to obey traffic-control personnel and plan around the closure. -
