B.C. Conservatives slam ‘decade of decline’ 2026 B.C. budget
B.C. Conservatives says Budget 2026 is an “assault on seniors, working families, and the small businesses that drive our economy.”
The B.C. Green Party says the government is doubling down on a familiar approach of managing decline, while investing in industry-first growth, and going backward on forestry reform, Indigenous relations, and healthy ecosystems.
These comments came shortly after Finance Minister Brenda Bailey delivered this year’s B.C. budget in the legislature Tues -

Family of man killed by semi in B.C. says psychosis afflicted him, system failed him
The family of a late young man is searching for answers and accountability after they say he somehow evaded 24/7 supervision in a state of psychosis and escaped Vernon Jubilee Hospital, wearing only hosptial pyjamas and socks, only to be fatally struck by a semi-truck about a kilometre from the place where he should have been kept safe.
Ezra Cool died in the early hours of Feb. 12 after being struck by the semi, which was heading east on Highway 6 near the 27th Street intersection. The former Ro -
Budget 2026 will delay 7 scheduled long-term care projects in B.C.
The latest provincial budget includes delays to seven long-term care projects throughout B.C.
B.C.’s seniors advocate Dan Levitt says that’s just going to put the pressure elsewhere in a province that is already behind on seniors care.
Budget 2026 says the government is “adjusting the timing of delivery” of several long-term care projects “to incorporate the lessons learned from projects already underway and from it’s ongoing review of the long-term care infra -

Snuneymuxw First Nations members who live on reserve lands may finally have the opportunity to vote for Nanaimo’s mayor and council due to a proposed boundary change.
In a joint press conference on Tuesday, Feb. 17, Snuneymuxw Chief Mike Wyse and Nanaimo Mayor Leonard Krog announced they would be pursuing a boundary change to have Snuneymuxw First Nation reserve lands included within the City of Nanaimo.

B.C. is raising taxes and cutting public sector jobs as provincial debt soars
B.C.’s latest budget will slash public sector jobs and raise taxes.
But over the next three years, the province’s debt is still expected to soar. By 2028, British Columbians could be paying 8.2 cents out of every tax dollar toward interest.
Finance Minister Brenda Bailey released what she has called a “tough” budget on Tuesday (Feb. 17), but also made the firm declaration that it is not an “austerity” budget — the government still intends to invest in se -

Former B.C. Conservative leader will not take another leadership run
Nechako Lakes MLA John Rustad will not seek the leadership of the B.C. Conservative Party again.
In a Facebook post on Sunday (Feb. 15) Rustad said he made the decision after a lot of reflection.
“This decision is not about the importance of the moment we are in. It is exactly because this moment matters that I am making it,” he wrote.
“British Columbia needs a Conservative Party that is united, focused, and ready to form government. The best thing I can do for the party, and u -

“Standing water and wood is never good,” he says to the person on the other end. “I can come by after I drop my truck off, maybe tomorrow.”
Svanvik, a hereditary chief and former elected chief, hangs up and tells me he was talking to someone in Port McNeill, B.C., about a support system for a totem pole he helped carve.
