  • NAV Canada to conduct routine flight inspection over Nanaimo Harbour

    Nanaimo RCMP are asking people not to be alarmed if they see a low flying aircraft over Nanaimo Harbour.
    NAV Canada will make passes over the harbour between 10:30 a.m. and noon Tuesday, Feb. 17, in a large transport‑category jet aircraft.
    NAV Canada Flight Inspection, according to the RCMP press release, has advised that the flight is part of a regularly scheduled verification of the existing approach at the harbour airport.

  • Two people hospitalized after helicopter crashes near Nelson

    Two people were hospitalized after a helicopter crashed in the Nelson area on Feb. 13.
    The crash occurred in the morning near Mount Kubin, which is approximately 15 kilometres northwest of Nelson, according to a statement from the Royal Canadian Air Force.
    RCAF said there was low cloud and reduced visibility at the crash site.

    Athletes from a Nanaimo academy came away with a haul of gold at a Brazilian jiu-jitsu tournament in the Lower Mainland.
    Daniel Jin, Ronin Hawley and Sonny Thiara, of Island Top Team, combined for six golds and a bronze medal at the Grappling Industries Vancouver Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Gi and Nogi round robin tournament at the B.C. Institute of Technology Burnaby campus on Jan. 31.
