Yukon government opposition won’t hold up federal gun buyback program: MP
The Yukon government’s opposition to the federal gun buyback program won’t hold up the program, according to Yukon MP Brendan Hanley.
Territorial Justice Minister Laura Lang expressed in a statement that the Yukon government won’t participate in this “counterproductive program,” but didn’t outline the government’s next steps.
The way the program works is that the RCMP will be in charge of collecting firearms under the program using federal funding that i -

Vancouver Island joins provincial push to make reading social
In an age where screens usually do the talking, thousands of readers across B.C. will be turning pages together instead.
The Great Big Buddy Read returns on Thursday, Jan. 29, inviting students, families and community members across Greater Victoria to pair up and share stories as part of a provincewide celebration during Family Literacy Week.
The initiative challenges the idea that reading is a quiet, solitary pursuit, instead reframing it as something social, joyful and shared.

Vancouver Island e-bike theft a reminder of how registration can reduce risk
While his cargo e-bike might now be a shell of its former self, Coun. Keith Yacucha can still see a silver lining.
He’s hoping the recent theft and return of his e-bike will encourage others to think about how to secure their two-wheel vehicles, plus take advantage of a bike registry program.
Yacucha’s $3,500 e-bike was stolen from his condo-building’s underground parkade sometime overnight Jan. 12. Video surveillance shows a masked thief using “insanely large bolt cutter -

The program, which runs every Sunday from 6 to 7 p.m. at Braefoot Park, is designed to create space for people facing social exclusion or vulnerable to homelessness to connect through soccer, community and a sense of belonging.

Inspiration came after retirement for Julia Banford, the latest artist featured at Art 10 Gallery.
Banford’s printmaking work will be on display over the month of February.
The artist was trained on printmaking while studying graphic arts and communications at University of the Fraser Valley, but once she landed a career at Canada Post, that training was put on the back burner, outside of custom holiday cards. After retirement, she found herself with time on her hands and a chance to once -

B.C. man’s 6-year search ends for the pulled pork sandwich he could not forget
Most people can relate to having that regular special spot they go to that has their favourite meal, and the anguish they feel when that spot closes.
For Shawnigan Lake resident Nic Bokrossy, it was a pulled pork sandwich he’d get every Friday at Charelli’s Cheese Shop and Delicatessen on Oak Bay’s Foul Bay Road while working as a landscaper in the area.
Even six years after the chef disappeared, Bokrossy couldn’t let the sandwich go. So, his partner Sairuh Tonin went on -
Waiting for an angel: B.C. woman with rare liver disease in need of donor

That changed a few years ago when she was diagnosed with a rare and incurable liver disease.
“I cried because I thought, ‘I’m too young to die,’” she said.
