A fire in a storage building in Nanaimo’s Old City Quarter sparked a response from the city’s firefighters.
Multiple units from Nanaimo Fire Rescue rushed to the scene Friday, Jan. 23, at about 12:40 p.m. where a single storey older commercial building on the 300 block of Selby Street had caught fire.
John MacKenzie, Nanaimo Fire Rescue assistant fire chief of operations, said fire crews arrived on the scene quickly because a crew was already working nearby when the alarm went out.

Curtailment of Chemainus sawmill will continue through 2026
The curtailment of the Chemainus sawmill will continue through to at least the end of 2026, Western Forest Products announced on Jan. 23.
WFP spokesperson Babita Khunkhun said the Chemainus mill, which has been curtailed since June, continues to face persistently weak market demand and ongoing log supply challenges that do not support the economic operation of the mill.
She said these conditions are not expected to change in the near term at the mill, which employs approximately 150 workers when -

Fallen old-growth in Vancouver Island park finds new life as salmon safe-haven
A fallen old-growth western redcedar tree in Goldstream Provincial Park will find new purpose – not on land, but in the river it once stood tall next to.
The toppled tree in the provincial park’s day-use area, located adjacent to the Trans-Canada Highway, will remain where it lies as large woody debris within the river system, creating natural habitat for salmon and other fish.
“Large in-stream wood improves salmon spawning and rearing habitat by slowing down water and allowing -
Once a welcome to Victoria, town crier statue now sits in limbo
A bronze statue that once welcomed cruise ship passengers to Victoria has quietly slipped into limbo, with no plan in place for its return.
The Town Crier statue, unveiled at Ogden Point in 2009 and removed roughly a decade ago for repairs, remains in storage, according to the Greater Victoria Harbour Authority (GVHA).
And while former Sidney crier Kenny Podmore says the statue represents a lasting legacy for the community, GVHA says its current focus lies elsewhere.

West Shore RCMP expansion project headed for ‘catastrophe’ warns ex-boss
