Police make arrest in 2020 homicide of Coquitlam man
Charges have been laid in relation to the homicide of a 24-year-old whose body was found in Maple Ridge.
Investigators with the Integrated Homicide Investigation Team, (IHIT), arrested 31-year-old Alan Mohammed Taheri of Port Coquitlam for the homicide of Edi Bogere.
(Previous stories have referred to the homicide victim as Edi Bogere-Nyigwo.)

Canada Post and the Canadian Union of Postal Workers have reached tentative agreements, with the union set to manage a ratification vote.

Assault suspect dead after interaction with Prince Rupert RCMP
An assault suspect has died following an incident with Prince Rupert RCMP.
On Dec. 19 at 2:24 p.m., Prince Rupert RCMP responded to a residence located in the 500 block of Pillsbury Avenue after a report of an assault. After speaking to the complainant, the RCMP proceeded toward the location of the male suspect.
A short time after contacting the suspect, an interaction took place, and a conducted energy weapon was deployed, police said.

One lucky lotto player is having a particularly good holiday season after waking up $46 million richer after winning the jackpot in this past weekend’s Lotto 6/49 draw.
On Sunday, Dec. 21, B.C. Lottery Corporation (BCLC) announced that a person who bought a ticket in Quesnel had matched all 10 winning numbers during Saturday night’s draw.

UPDATE: B.C. Ferries announced that sailings are set to resume on major routes after cancellations during the daytime Monday, Dec. 22.
Service on the Swartz Bay-Tsawwassen route resumes with a 6 p.m. sailing from Swartz Bay and a 7 p.m. sailing from Tsawwassen; service on the Duke Point-Tsawwassen route resumes at 8:15 p.m. and service on the Departure Bay-Horseshoe Bay route resumes at 8:30 p.m.

Ferry sailings are being cancelled throughout the day today to and from Nanaimo.
In a series of service notices, B.C. Ferries advised that sailings are cancelled on all major routes into the evening on Monday, Dec. 22.
The ferry corporation is pointing to Environment Canada’s “severe weather forecast for high winds and wave height in the Strait of Georgia.”
On the Departure Bay-Horseshoe Bay route, all sailings are cancelled from 10:55 a.m.-6:20 p.m.

Peer-support groups in B.C. help people who have suffered backcountry trauma
Cheryl Smith is her truest self in the mountains.

UPDATE: No one hurt as suspicious fire destroys Vernon newspaper warehouse
UPDATE: 9:30 a.m.
A fire that damaged the warehouse of the Vernon Morning Star started in a dumpster behind the building.
Upon arrival, fire crews found the blaze had extended from the dumpster into the rear of a nearby building. Due to the extent of the fire, mutual aid was requested from the BX Fire Department, which provided an engine and additional personnel to assist with suppression efforts.
Vernon RCMP have deemed the fire suspicous and believe it to be human caused.

An early morning blaze has damaged a significant portion of The Morning Star in Vernon.
The newspaper’s printing press facility and office is closed while firefighters investigate.
“Everyone is OK, no one was here when it broke out around 1:30 a.m.,” said group publisher Karen Hill.
It’s unknown how the fire was started, but it was concentrated in the back warehouse area.
Some flyers and the press are impacted by the fire, which is still smouldering at 7:30 a.m.

B.C. fur farmers discouraged after last legal challenge to COVID ban abandoned
Four years after a mid-pandemic shutdown, two fur farming associations have dropped their court case attempting to overturn the B.C. government’s decision.
As of December, the British Columbia Mink Producers Association and the Canada Mink Breeders Association announced they were dropping a petition for judicial review of the province’s shutdown order.

Two pedestrians injured after car drives onto Victoria sidewalk
Two pedestrians were injured in a collision on the afternoon of Dec. 19, after a car drove onto the sidewalk at the intersection of Oak Bay Avenue and Foul Bay Road.
VicPD said that just before 1 p.m., officers, paramedics and firefighters responded to the scene.
Police located a large collision scene spanning approximately one city block. One youth sustained minor injuries, while an elderly pedestrian suffered non-life-threatening injuries.

If there was any doubt that racing was over for good at Fraser Downs, that doubt has now been obliterated.
All the barns on the backstretch have been leveled.
The demolition began around Dec. 9 and all barns were down by Dec. 18, with excavators still patrolling the debris field to excoriate the foundations of the former backstretch.

‘Extremely dangerous’: Police seek woman shining red laser at Oak Bay drivers
The alleged use of a laser pointer led to a police search in Oak Bay late last week.
On the evening of Dec. 14, officers were dispatched to the intersection of Fort Street and Foul Bay Road, following a report of a woman shining a red laser at passing drivers.
“Shining lasers at drivers is extremely dangerous,” Oak Bay Police said in a news release. “It can cause temporary blindness or distraction, increasing the risk of collisions and serious injuries.”
