Quebec premier tells Trudeau he's 'not happy at all' with NAFTA deal
Canadian dairy farmers have panned the renegotiated trade pact between Canada, the U.S. and Mexico, saying the new deal will undercut the industry by limiting exports and opening up the market to more American products.
The renegotiated trade pact between Canada, the U.S. and Mexico, which will open up Quebec’s dairy market to American farmers, will likely not have an affect on Monday’s provincial election because all the province’s political parties have vowed to support Quebe -
Return of Canadiens forward Andrew Shaw adds wrinkle to roster plans
Just when you thought the Canadiens’ roster was set for Wednesday’s season opener in Toronto (7 p.m., Sportsnet, SN360, RDS, TSN 690 Radio), forward Andrew Shaw dropped in on the Canadiens’ practice in Brossard Monday and declared himself ready to go.
Shaw said he would like to be in the lineup Wednesday but, even if head coach Claude Julien decides to wait, his return is imminent, which means Jacob de la Rose and Nikita Scherbak are back on the bubble.
Shaw was sidelined -

Editorial: A NAFTA deal by any other name …
Not long after he took office, U.S. President Donald Trump assured Canada that, for all of his pillorying of NAFTA during the election campaign, the Canada-U.S. part of the trade relationship was merely in need of tweaks.
Little more than 18 months later, that is what has happened — but only thanks to steadfast negotiating on the Canadian side that has largely spared this country a host of harsher, even catastrophic, provisions that the Trump administration had tried to bully Canada into a -

5 things you should know about Habs' new season
Here are five things you should know about the 2018-19 Canadiens.
Youth will be served, Part 1: Jesperi Kotkaniemi has earned a roster spot to begin the season and the 18-year-old Finn is the youngest Canadien since Mario Tremblay broke in shortly after his 18th birthday in 1974. The Canadiens have a reputation for bringing young players along slowly but these are desperate times and Kotkaniemi, who was drafted third overall in June, forced coach Claude Julien’s hand by standing out in the -

Two days after a high-profile investigation involving a Liberal MNA fell apart, Robert Lafrenière, director of Quebec’s anti-corruption squad, has resigned from his post.

What the Puck: Habs management is busy spinning the truth
It’s all about the public-relations spin with the Montreal Canadiens.
If management spent half as much time on hockey operations as they do managing the media, the Habs really would be contenders. There was a lot of talk about the team’s off-seasons moves — bringing in mighty nine-goal scorer Max Domi and Vegas playoff bench-warmer Tomas Tatar — but I maintain that the biggest move since that miserable last season was Geoff Molson’s decision to hire Paul Wilson as h -

Opinion: After divisive election, let's listen to each other's stories
With the end of another divisive election cycle in Quebec, one of the lesser known recommendations of the Bouchard-Taylor commission into reasonable accommodation comes to mind. Then, as now, heated debates around immigration usually included sweeping statements about “immigrants,” “refugees” and “pure laine” Quebecers. Gérard Bouchard and Charles Taylor believed if -

Charles Aznavour, who had lifelong love affair with Quebec, has died
The death of French singer Charles Aznavour closes a long and storied chapter of Quebec’s musical history.
The singer and actor, who died Monday at the age of 94, left an indelible impression on the province, one he visited frequently over the course of his career.
It’s a love story that didn’t begin recently. In 1948, about two years after coming to the notice of French singer Edith Piaf, Aznavour played at the Faisan Doré, a Montreal nightclub where, with pianist -
Quebec election: Leaders, dairy farmers on high alert for NAFTA talks
“The worst has happened.”
This was Parti Québécois leader Jean-François Lisée’s reaction to news — late Sunday night — that Quebec’s dairy farmers will bear the brunt of trade concessions between Canada and the United States.
“Canada has already made significant concessions on dairy. Why? To protect Ontario’s auto industry against tariffs,” said Lisée during a campaign stop at a cheese factory.
