Romeo meets her Juliet in Repercussion’s same-sex version
The star-crossed lovers get the cross-gender treatment in the latest production from Shakespeare-in-the-Park specialists Repercussion Theatre, now into their 30th season. Their Romeo and Juliet, which opened on Thursday and tours around Montreal (and beyond) to Aug. 8, sees Shauna Thompson playing the lovelorn swain to Michelle Rambharose’s Juliet.
It shouldn’t be a complete shock to the system, given the long Shakespearean tradition of mixing it up gender-wise, whether it be Elizabe -

Shea Weber's knee surgery raises questions about Canadiens
There will no doubt be plenty of questions about the Canadiens’ medical staff following Thursday’s news that defenceman Shea Weber had surgery on his right knee on June 19 and will now be sidelined until at least mid-December.
Weber, who will turn 33 on Aug. 14, already had surgery in March to repair tendons in his left foot. Weber suffered a fracture in his left foot when he was hit with a shot during the first game of the season, but played 26 games before his year came to an end w -
Jean-Talon Market merchants decry plan for public square in parking lot
A longtime merchant at the Jean-Talon Market said he will have to close up shop if the city goes ahead with a plan to remove parking spots to build a public square.
The city announced a plan last month to permanently close Shamrock Ave. to cars and make it a place for people to walk and sit, with several seating areas, a picnic area and newly planted trees and plants. Construction on the project began last month and is expected to be completed by the end of the year.
However, merchants are miffe -

Restaurant review: Some but not all of Le Petit Italien's charms restored
There is a certain kind of restaurant that almost inevitably thrives because it checks off so many boxes. Mid-priced? Check. Terrasse? Check. Neighbourhood place? Check. Terrific location? Check. And finally, I’d say, casual French bistro or classic Italian? Check and check. The chances for success rise with every such asset. If you have two or more, you basically have it made. If you have them all, you should have it made in the shade.
Outremont’s Le Petit Italien is a restaurant wi -

Vanity licence plates exempt from Quebec's French language charter
French, English, Spanish or even Italian: any language will be acceptable on personalized licence plates when they start appearing on cars in the province sometime next month.

Brownstein: Jean-Marc Vallée delivers another powerhouse HBO series
It’s uncanny. Montreal director Jean-Marc Vallée has this knack for penetrating the American underbelly, often with even more precision than his counterparts to the south.
Vallée did it on the big screen in Dallas Buyers Club and Wild, and on the small screen in Big Little Lies last year. He does it again in the brutally searing and haunting psychological thriller Sharp Objects, the eight-part miniseries based on the Gillian Flynn novel which debuts Sunday at 9 p.m. on HBO Ca -

Montreal real estate undergoes a millennial-powered rental renaissance
A renaissance in rental construction is projected to add tens of thousands of new apartment units in the Montreal area over the next few years, and they’re not your typical cheap urban flats.
The new building trend is for higher-end — and in some cases, luxury — rentals, designed to appeal to up-and-coming young professionals and downsizing baby boomers. Many of these new projects also aren’t in the city, but in suburban areas like the South Shore.

The SQ does not yet know what caused the fire.

Fariha Naqvi-Mohamed: Beating Montreal's heat wave is a community effort
Sprinklers, sticky Popsicles and community pools — these are some of the things that come to mind when I recall my childhood summers. Growing up mostly without AC, we’d bear the summer heat while staying hydrated as best as we could.
In the days long before splash pads, a sprinkler was enough to entertain us for hours at a time. We’d run through it shrieking with excitement. If we wanted to be particularly festive, we might even rip up a garbage bag to slide on with water from -

Canadiens' Shea Weber out until mid-December after knee surgery
The Canadiens provided a medical update on Shea Weber Thursday and it’s not good news.
In fact, it’s terrible news for a team that finished 28th in the overall NHL standings last season when the No. 1 defenceman only played 26 games due to injuries.
The Canadiens announced that Weber had arthroscopic surgery last month to repair a meniscal tear in his right knee and the veteran defenceman’s recovery period is expected to be six months. Weber also had surgery in March to repair -
Rahul Varma: Why SLAV's cancellation was right decision
All artists have freedom to express truths and ideas, particularly uncomfortable truths and provocative ideas; artists have the freedom to learn about cultures and stories other than their own. They should not, however, have the freedom to discriminate, distort and exploit colonial histories.
Cultural freedom is sacred, but it is essential to behave ethically in exercising that freedom. And ethical considerations do not permit the production of a show about black slavery without an equitable par -
P.K. Subban and girlfriend Lindsey Vonn ask: Who wore it better?
When it comes to social media, there are few athletes who do it better than P.K. Subban and Lindsey Vonn.
Now that the Nashville Predators defenceman and the U.S. ski star are dating, it’s a double-whammy.
Subban and Vonn are vacationing together in Italy and celebrated Wednesday’s July 4 Independence Day holiday back in the U.S. by posing in matching (or the same?) red-and-white striped bathing suits with “USA” on the front and P.K. asking on Twitter: “Who wore it -
