Editorial: Montreal's calèche ban is long overdue
Montreal’s decision to ban calèches starting in 2020 is long overdue. The horse-drawn carriages that chauffeur tourists around Old Montreal raise animal welfare concerns as well as being anachronisms — and not in a good way.
Mayor Valérie Plante’s administration has acted sensibly and generously in giving calèche owners and drivers ample notice. A one-year moratorium imposed suddenly in the spring of 2016 by her predecessor Denis Coderre, after a collision -

The Sens came within a shot of the Stanley Cup final a year ago and since then the team Montreal fans love to hate has stumbled from one unmitigated disaster to another.

Macpherson: An appreciation of my friend Geoff, and other politicians
In the nearly 50 years I’ve covered Quebec politics, people sometimes asked me whether I’d ever go into politics myself. I wouldn’t, because I know what being a member of the National Assembly involves.
A speech I heard in 1976, at a Quebec City nomination meeting, has stuck with me.
“It’s hard,” said then Liberal minister Raymond Garneau, “when you get a phone call at night from a woman crying because her husband is out of work and drinking, and you can -

Wine: Need a break from white and red? Try dry sherry
As rosé has become more widely accepted as a legitimate table wine rather than that halfway wine to be drunk as an apéritif when you want a break from white or red, it’s time to champion another unfairly marginalized wine style. My vote goes to xeres, or sherry for you of English descent.
Why? In the somewhat baffling move by consumers toward sweeter red wines, I have noticed that people want drier and drier whites. I don’t know why, because white wines hold their sweet -

The Right Chemistry: Bleaching powder no match for London's 'Great Stink'
It was during the summer of 1858 that Londoners experienced the “Great Stink.” The city was sweltering with temperatures that reached 36 degrees, but it was not the heat that bothered people. The rising temperature had increased the microbial activity in the fecal matter causing the release of putrid smelling compounds like indole, skatole, methanethiol, dimethylsulphide and hydrogen su -

Brownstein: The circus is back in town – Fringe fest's circus, that is
The circus is back in town. No, not that Cirque with the mechanical trapeze flyers and high-wire artistes. Perhaps more like the defunct Ringling Brothers/Barnum and Bailey with the carnies and clowns.
We’re talking about the 20th Montreal Fringe, a loopy spectacle second to none in this city. No lions or tigers, but it does include a stripping juggler, a sub-atomic rock opera on quantum physics, a multi-tentacled human octopus and, of course, the “50-ft. woman,” Amy Blackmore,
