Vineyard owned by former politician Alfonso Gagliano wins awards
It’s a four-medal streak for Alfonso Gagliano and his vineyard in the Eastern Townships.
The former federal cabinet minister, known for his role in the sponsorship scandal that rocked the Liberal government of Jean Chrétien, now has accolades for four 2016 wines produced by Gagliano Vineyards: three silvers and a bronze awarded by the Finger Lakes International Wine Competition 2018 in New York.
The prizes were announced last week after judges tasted the wines in late March.

Montreal to name park after Habs great Dickie Moore
The city will name a park in northern Outremont after hockey great Dickie Moore.
The new park will be in the neighbourhood taking shape near the Université de Montréal’s new science and engineering campus.
The executive committee authorized the decision Wednesday.

Businessman turned Quebec Liberal campaign chair Alexandre Taillefer believes media mogul Pierre Karl Péladeau exerts a “certain influence” on the work carried out by reporters and columnists at the Journal de Montréal.
Taillefer made the assertion during an interview Wednesday on 98.5 FM radio.
Péladeau, a former leader of the Parti Québécois, is controlling shareholder of the Quebecor media chain that includes the Journal de Montréal. -

Rockfest founder's band Deadly Apples touring with Rob Zombie, Marilyn Manson
The Montreal band Deadly Apples, fronted by Montebello Rockfest founder Alex Martel, will open for Rob Zombie and Marilyn Manson on their 30-date North American tour this summer. The tour is called Twins of Evil — The Second Coming and runs from July 11 to Aug. 29. The only Canadian date is at the Budweiser Stage in Toronto July 26. (Zombie and Manson will play the Heavy Montréal festival on July 28, but Deadly Apples aren’t on the bill.)

Quebec mosque shooting: Victims commemorated with McGill bursary
In an effort to “encourage greater tolerance and understanding in Quebec and Canada,” McGill University has established the Centre culturel islamique de Québec Memorial Award — a pair of $1,200 bursaries that will be given to McGill students who have fostered “the inclusion of Muslims within the larger Québécois and Canadian societies.”

Sherbrooke cops bust cocaine, meth supply site
A raid by Sherbrooke police has led to one arrest and the seizure of several kilos of cocaine and thousands of methamphetamine pills.

Charles Dutoit could lose Order of Montreal as new recipients named
Montreal’s executive committee has approved this year’s recipients of the order of Montreal.
They include medical researcher Michel Chrétien, Olympic leader Richard Pound and Louise Roy, who in the 1980s and ’90s headed what is now the Société de transport de Montréal.
