Allison Hanes: To Mom, with gratitude and apologies
I had to become a mother myself to fully appreciate my own.
This is probably not an original realization, but in the quest to blaze our own trails as modern women, we are too often blind to such truths until they smack us in the face. And dealing with the challenges of raising small children is just the wake-up call I needed to cast my own youthful antics in a fresh light and fill me with gratitude for my mom’s extraordinary patience.
I was the Difficult Child, according to the title of a -

Stu Cowan: Joël Bouchard sure looks like a good fit with Canadiens
BOISBRIAND — Joël Bouchard landed a pretty sweet job as an RDS analyst for Canadiens games after his 14-year NHL playing career ended.
It’s the kind of job any former player would love, staying involved in the game while watching the action up-close from beside the Canadiens’ backup goalie at the end of the bench. There’s not a ton of pressure and you’re one of the few media people who gets to travel on the Canadiens’ charter flights and stay in the same -

While you were sleeping: Polls open in Iraq, rebel attacks in Myanmar
Polls opened across Iraq on Saturday in the first national election since the declaration of victory over the Islamic State group.
After hours of low voter turnout, Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi partially lifted a security curfew to encourage more people to come to the polls. After weeks of official campaigning, no clear front-runner has emerged as al-Abadi faces stiff competition from political parties with closer ties to Iran.

The video crusader: one citizen's battle to film council meetings in the spirit of transparency
As he has every month for the past several years, on Jan. 15, Francisco Moreno made his way to LaSalle’s borough hall for its monthly council meeting. It was the first one of the year but also significant in another way: for the first time ever, the meeting was being filmed and streamed online.
For Moreno, the meeting was a personal victory of sorts. For roughly nine years, the 54-year-old masonry contractor had argued the borough should either stream its meetings -

Royal Orr: Appreciating the bridge-builders
I drove into Montreal earlier this week to listen to the former mayor of Montreal, Denis Coderre, give the keynote address at the Victor and Sheila Goldbloom Symposium. On Sunday, the 72-year-old obstetrician-gynecologist will be honoured for her life’s work, which includes co-founding a prenatal clinic in 1979 at the Royal Victoria Hospital for women with gestational diabetes — the first such clinic in Canada. -
