Quebec floods: Pierrefonds couple drained life savings, still waiting for funds from province
After the basement in their Pierrefonds home was flooded on May 7, 2017, Zofia and Ped Malek cashed in their life savings and rolled up their sleeves to do the repairs themselves.
The Maleks were among about 6,000 property owners who sustained damage during last year’s historic flooding in the Montreal area.
Now nearly a year later, the Maleks are still waiting for the province to come through with money promised by the disaster relief fund set up in the wake of the flooding.
Zofia, 68, is -

Westmount Liberals hope for anglo MNA this time around
QUEBEC — The last time Westmount–Saint-Louis riding had an English-speaking MNA, his name was Richard Holden — and he ended his career having crossed the floor to the Parti Québécois.
That was 1989, and the teacups are still rattling.
Today, with the general election looming, a movement is building to return to the tradition of having an anglophone representative or at least someone who lives in the riding if, as expected, current Liberal MNA Jacques Chagnon decid -

Social Notes: Sterling quality Daffodil Ball
When I first skipped onto the social scene as Gazette Social Gal more than a decade ago, I was admittedly unaware of what that actually entailed. I mean, I knew we are the “party city” and the beat would never be dull, but I had no idea the social reach was so huge — and that certain events would take on global appeal, like the internationally recognized and award-laden Daffodil Ball benefiting the Canadian Cancer Society. Noties, it brings me great pleasure today to continue c -
Zurkowsky: Alouettes' Kavis Reed deserves full marks for draft strategy
Trey Rutherford will never lift fans out of their seats at Molson Stadium. Let’s face it, nobody goes to Canadian Football League games to watch 6-foot-5, 312-pound offensive linemen.
Slowly but surely, however, Alouettes general manager Kavis Reed is doing his best to improve this misfit band of spare parts he inherited almost 18 months ago. Will it translate into a competitive team, one that improves on its 3-15 record in 2017?
There are many throughout the league who firmly believe the -

Macpherson: A debate in English, a trap for Legault
It’s understandable if Quebec anglophones were excited that leaders of the four parties in the National Assembly agreed in principle this week to a televised debate in English during the campaign for the Oct. 1 general election.
It would be only the second leaders’ debate in English in a Quebec election campaign ever, and the first on television. There was one on radio in 1985 (in which the leader of a short-lived, fringe, pro-independence party was included on the order of the chief -
Impact 'keeper Evan Bush sees ray of hope after brutal road stretch
The Montreal Impact knew it would be tough to pick up points while playing six of their first eight Major League Soccer games away from home.
But they had hoped to do better than a 2-6 record and an MLS-high 21 goals conceded.
Now they’re back a Saputo Stadium for three of their next four games, starting Saturday (1 p.m., TVA Sports, TSN 690 Radio) against the New England Revolution (4-2-2).
“Playing six out of eight on the road in tough environments kind of baptized us with a bit of -
Editorial: Exposing neo-Nazi activity is essential
The Montreal Gazette revealed this week that a prominent North American neo-Nazi propagandist is based in this city and has been recruiting here. A major investigation by two independent journalists and a Gazette reporter linked “Zeiger,” the pseudonym for a prolific writer for the extreme-right website the Daily Stormer, to an IT consultant who lives in Rosemont-La Petite-Patrie. And their investigation chronicled how Zeiger assembled a nucleus of supporters who left the shadows of -
What the Puck: Habs' return to glory a matter of dollars and sense
It is impossible to exaggerate the bitterness felt by Habs fans.
Many of us are watching some mighty exciting playoff hockey and as we see the best players in the world engage in the war of attrition that is the never-ending NHL post-season, we think of just how far our Montreal Canadiens are from teams like the Winnipeg Jets, Nashville Predators, Boston Bruins, Tampa Bay Lightning, Vegas Golden Knights, San Jose Sharks, Washington Capitals and the Pittsburgh Penguins.

May the 4th be with you: Stormtroopers cheer up kids at Quebec hospital
