Cement production is one of the world’s leading sources of carbon dioxide emissions, accounting for as much as 10 per cent of global emissions, according to a 2014 study by the Netherlands Environmental Assessment Agency.
Most of that cement is used to make concrete.
While methods have been developed to reduce the amount of cement used in concrete, it’s still a necessary ingredient, binding the materials together.
But Mehrdad Mahoutian wants to change that.

Longueuil profiling case headed to human rights tribunal
The city of Longueuil will not comply with a decision by the Quebec Human Rights and Youth Rights Commission asking it to pay $12,000 to a South Shore man who was racially profiled by police in 2012.
That means the decision over the profiling of Joel DeBellefeuille will be referred to the Quebec Human Rights Tribunal, Fo Niemi, executive director of the Centre for Research-Action on Race Relations (CRARR), said on Sunday.

About 100 cows are dead after flames tore through a dairy farm south of Montreal early Sunday morning.
Fire services were called around 2 a.m. to the farm in Noyan, near the Quebec-U.S. border.
Several neighbouring fire departments were also called in to battle the blaze, which was brought under control around 7 a.m.
Michael Johnston, assistant chief of operations, says the fire probably originated in the building’s electrical system.

Motorcycle safety campaign encourages other drivers to share the road
Quebec’s car insurance agency is launching a motorcycle safety campaign, aimed at other drivers as well as motorcyclists.
The goal is to tell drivers of other vehicles to share the road, and encourage motorcyclists to drive safely.
Fifty-four motorcyclists were killed in 2016, when 180,000 motorcycles were registered in Quebec. That was four more than in 2015.
Speed, carelessness and distraction, often on the part of other drivers, are the main causes of motorcycle accidents.

Minimum wage goes up to $12 an hour on Tuesday
Quebec’s minimum wage goes up by 75 cents to $12 an hour on Tuesday.
The increase will affect nearly 353,000 workers, mostly women, according to the provincial labour department.
However, Quebec lags behind other provinces on the basic hourly rate. The minimum wage is $14 an hour in Ontario, rising to $15 on Jan. 1, 2019, while it is already $15 in Alberta.
Employers’ organizations in Quebec have said the 75-cent increase could cause job losses, or at least cause employers to r -

Fitness: Does the 'e' in e-bike stand for exercise?
Electric bikes have a bad rep in the fitness community. Battery powered and motor assisted, they allow users to forgo the effort it takes to pedal, which decreases the fitness and health benefits of cycling.
But not everyone has the strength and endurance necessary to tackle hilly terrain or a tough headwind. And there are commuters who may not want to sit behind their desk all sweaty after a long, arduous bike ride into the office.

Incineration is Swedish for recycling
Carbon taxing puts the cart before the horse. I am against it for two reasons:
1-It is plainly another tax dip for political governance inefficiency (redundancy alert.)
2-It is a penalty supposedly imposed on people who refuse to get it — stop polluting – but like a drag net, it sweeps us all up in its indiscriminate mesh.
I go out of my way to sort, recycle and compost, avoid unnecessary packaging and buy in bulk when possible, and always have a dozen cloth bags in the car. (Note to -

Stu Cowan: Canadiens don't luck out at NHL Draft Lottery
Canadiens legend Dickie Moore used to love to ask people whether they’d rather be good or be lucky.
