Stu Cowan: Habs hope Lady Luck's on their side at NHL Draft Lottery
If Canadiens general manager Marc Bergevin has a lucky suit in his closet he should wear it Saturday night. He might also want to put a small horseshoe, a rabbit’s foot and a four-leaf clover in one of his pockets.
After finishing 28th out of 31 teams during the regular season, the Canadiens have a 9.5-per-cent chance of winning the No. 1 pick at Saturday night’s NHL Draft Lottery. The Buffalo Sabres, who finished in last place, have an 18.5-per-cent chance, followed by the Ottawa Se -

Spring thaw causes floods in Beauce and Gaspé
Some Quebec rivers overflowed Friday, notably in the Beauce and Gaspé regions.
In Ste-Marie-de-Beauce, the Chaudière River is overflowing, forcing 19 people to leave their homes. About 100 houses have been isolated, and 250 homes have had to pump water, according to Urgence Québec.
The municipality opened a relief centre for flood victims, Mayor Gaétan Vachon said.
Citizens can check water levels in their areas by going to the civil security department’s Vigilan -

Montreal march to 'side with workers' to be held Saturday
May 1 will come early in Quebec this year – on April 28, to be precise.
Saturday marks the traditional celebration of the Fête internationale des travailleurs du 1er mai (International Workers’ Day), with a “national” march leaving from Olympic Park at 1 p.m., heading to Parc des Faubourgs, near the Jacques Cartier Bridge.
Some years, the Fête des travailleurs takes the form of regional gatherings, but things are different this year with the Oct. 1 Quebec elec -

The long farewell: Crumbling Blue Bonnets racetrack to be demolished
The abandoned Hippodrome de Montréal grandstand looks over a weed-choked field, a mountain of dirty snow covering the track where horses once thundered past on their way to the finish line.
In the almost 10 years since the harness racing track closed, the structure has been quietly decaying as a series of municipal and provincial administrations have struggled to put a plan in place for the immense track of land northwest of Montreal’s downtown.
Now, that era will likely come to an -

Walter Buchignani: Taking stock as Formula One stops in Azerbaijan
After three races in far-flung lands, now’s a good time to take stock of the Formula One season so far.
This weekend, F1 edges closer to its European base as the series rolls into the streets of Baku for the Azerbaijan Grand Prix.
After that, nine of the following 10 races take place on European soil before the teams pack up again for the season homestretch, beginning in Singapore in September.
Some count Baku itself as part of the European leg, despite its location in the Caucasus on the -

What the Puck: Geoff Molson will turn around Canadiens horror show
I have faith. I really do.
I believe that Montreal Canadiens owner and president Geoff Molson will do the right thing. Molson is a standup guy and he really does want to bring the Stanley Cup back to Montreal. His family has been part of the Habs ownership group on and off for several decades and I know that Molson would give anything to return this tattered franchise to its previous glory.
Make no mistake, I have not put on the rose-coloured glasses favoured by the Bergevinites. A few days back -

Impact's makeshift defence faces a daunting Atlanta United attack
The first priority for the Montreal Impact when they face Atlanta United on Saturday is to avoid having anyone sent off.
The Impact (2-5) have seen two players ejected in their last three games, all losses. Eight of the 12 goals they conceded in that span came when playing a man down.
The latest was defender Victor Cabrera, who was sent packing 40 minutes into a 5-3 home defeat to Los Angeles FC last Saturday that the Impact led 3-1 at the intermission. It came two weeks after midfielder Saphir -

Wine: Try looking through orange-coloured glasses
Orange wines are catching on — finally. Since I first wrote about them in 2015, this ancient wine style has become more popular, and we are seeing more on the shelves at the SAQ. For the uninitiated, they have nothing to do with oranges, rather they are skin-macerated white wines.
Most white wines are made by separating the juice from the skins immediately after the grapes are pressed. For reds, the grape skins are left in contact with the juice, a technique called maceration. For orange w -

Dance: Shaolin Temple’s kung-fu monks are unleashed again in Sutra
Re-enter the dragon. Sutra, Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui’s legendary collaboration with 19 Buddhist monks and kung-fu masters, all from China’s Shaolin Temple, is back in town next week, courtesy of Danse Danse and London’s Sadler’s Wells.
