The city of Laval is offering a $2,000 grant to any of its citizens who want to buy a fully electric car, making it the first municipality in Canada to do so. In conjuction with Quebec’s Roulez électrique program that gives buyers of an all-electric vehicle an $8,000 grant, Laval residents can save $10,000 of the cost off a vehicle like the Nissan Leaf, which retails at $36,000, or the smaller Smart fortwo that sells for $29,000.

Editorial: Loss in Bill 99 constitutionality case is ultimately a win
Keith Henderson may have lost his court challenge against Bill 99, but Justice Claude Dallaire’s nuanced decision Thursday in the long-running case ultimately leaves him a winner. It allows just about everyone else to declare victory, too.
The law, enacted in 2000 by the Parti Québécois government of the day, asserted Quebecers’ right to determine their future. Underpinning Henderson’s challenge was the concern that certain articles might be used a -

Don Macpherson: A major-league boondoggle for Montreal
On Wednesday, Montrealers awoke to see snow on the ground and hear a forecast of a high temperature that would feel like 3 degrees Celsius.
It was three weeks into the major-league baseball season. Boosters of a proposed new ballpark say Montreal has proven it’s a baseball city by filling (or this year, half-filling) the indoor Olympic Stadium for a couple of pre-season games. But on Wednesday, none was heard waxing poetic about the pleasures of taking in the summer game in an open-air bal -

In Kanesatake, a marijuana dispensary sprouts on Mohawk land
There’s no turning back now.
The thought looped its way around Clifton Ariwakehte Nicholas’s mind as he sorted through a pile of narcotics. It was, he thought, surreal to see the freezer bags sprawled out in his shop, each stuffed with fragrant, yellowish-green buds.
Nicholas opened the first-ever medical marijuana dispensary in the Kanesatake Mohawk territory on Friday.
The dispensary is, strictly speaking, illegal. It puts Nicholas at odds with the provincial police who patrol Kane -

Review: Louise Pitre’s Édith Piaf soars in The Angel and the Sparrow
Feathers fly when the Little Sparrow meets the Blue Angel in a story of the relationship between two legendary chanteuses. And at the risk of being ungallant to one of them, there’s a clear winner by the end of it.
In Broadway director Gordon Greenberg’s enjoyable production of the German musical biopic The Angel and the Sparrow, playing at the Segal Centre through May 6, Louise Pitre caps her many stage incarnations of Édith Piaf with a remarkable, heart-raking portrayal of a -

Wine: Quebecers plant roots in Oregon
Back in 1986, a Colorado wine merchant named Michael Etzel purchased a 35-hectare farm in Oregon’s Willamette Valley and planted pinot noir. His partner, and brother-in-law, was famed U.S. wine critic Robert Parker Jr. Their venture was named Beaux Frères, and part of their success can be attributed to a Quebecer. The first harvests from Beaux Frères were sold to other wineries. In 1990, Quebecer Robert Roy invested in the business, on the condition that they build a wine -

QUEBEC — Jan. 29, 2017, was a normal day at the Soufiane household in Quebec City.

Brownstein: Despite star power, Seth Rogen’s Netflix show is less than stellar
Montrealers, be warned: Seth Rogen’s Hilarity for Charity show, which is now streaming on Netflix, is definitely not to be confused with the Just for Laughs gala of the same name, one of the highlights of the 2014 fest.
This latest, like the JFL show, was a fundraiser for Alzheimer’s research and awareness. Hilarity for Charity was founded by Rogen and his wife, Lauren Miller Rogen, as a tribute to her mother who had been beset with the disease.
