Comedy traces attempt to transform a ramshackle fixer-upper
Describing it as a dump would be generous. A good-natured slacker named Bruno has inherited a shack near a swamp from his dad and Bruno has a plan. He wants to transform it into a vacation destination and rent it out to family. Uh, not so fast.
Such is the premise of humorist Lorne Elliott’s play The Fixer-Upper, based on his book of the same name. The play has a two-day run at Hudson Village Theatre, April 20-21 at 8 p.m.
Elliott, a longtime Hudson resident, directs the play and shares st -

One of Quebec’s most notorious inmates serving time at a federal penitentiary will be getting a slight taste of freedom for the first time in four decades.

Opinion: I’m not going to delete Facebook, and here’s why
The #DeleteFacebook movement, in which users were encouraged to abandon the social-media leviathan in the face of privacy scandals, came from a position of male privilege.
Calls to back away from Facebook have echoed for years, but privacy warriors doubled down this month after reports a British data-mining firm, Cambridge Analytica, had used Facebook to gather personal data that it then used on behalf of political clients.
The outrage — much of it on Facebook and rival Twitter — dem -

Opinion: Remembering Claude Ryan
I read Royal Orr’s Saturday column (“Ryan brought linguistic peace to Quebec“) with nostalgia, broad agreement, but a few reservations. The nostalgia came in recalling our CJAD debate shortly before the 1989 Quebec election. I was one of the four Equality Party candidates who won seats in it. Orr argued, roughly, that Quebec anglos could catch more flies with honey than vinegar. I was more abrasive, arguing that Robert Bourassa’s recent surrender to nationalist fevers had -

What began as a morning of school cancellations, windshield maintenance and fears for the worst was by midday Monday officially designated as another grey, blustery, rainy day in April.
