It’s a safe bet that mixing the fervid passion of Édith Piaf with the cool aloofness of Marlene Dietrich will brew up some dramatic thunder when The Angel and the Sparrow opens at the Segal Centre this weekend. The casting choices for these two legendary divas certainly won’t hurt the show’s chances.
Piaf is being played by “the First Lady of Canadian musical theatre,” Louise Pitre. Pitre, who has played Piaf several times before, will be forever associated i

Stu Cowan: Suggestions on which playoff teams Habs fans should root for
For the second time in three years there will be no NHL playoff action in Montreal.
Last season, there were only three playoff games at the Bell Centre as the Canadiens were eliminated by the New York Rangers in six games in the first round. The Canadiens lost two of the three games on home ice, so Bell Centre fans have witnessed only one playoff victory in the last three years.
While the Canadiens aren’t in the playoffs this year, there are quite a few former Habs taking part with differe -
Montreal money launderer sentenced to five years in jail, serves two months

On Tuesday, the Parole Board of Canada determined Lech, 55, should be released from the penitentiary she was brought to just two months ago.

Quebec rodeos violated animal protection laws: report
An examination of videos of 20 rodeos held in Montreal and St-Tite last summer concludes they were illegal and a report to that effect has been filed with the provincial agriculture ministry’s committee on rodeos.
The report was made public on Wednesday by Université de Montréal law professor Alain Roy, who last summer filed a request for an injunction to stop a rodeo staged as part of Montreal’s 375th anniversary celebrations.

Mayor's plan puts home ownership within reach of Montreal families
Mayor Valérie Plante announced a new program Wednesday to help more Montrealers become homeowners.
Plante said that while the city’s booming economy is good news, soaring housing prices are beyond the means of many families with young children.
“That’s why we have gone ahead with the creation of a program to support residential acquisition, for which we are setting aside an annual budget of $21.2 million,” she said.

Analyze This: Habs GM's botched roster construction began at blue line
It would be an understatement to say a lot went wrong for the Canadiens this year.
Not only did they finish with the second-lowest point total in modern franchise history, only one point ahead of the infamously terrible 2001 edition of the team, but they finished with a minus-55 goal differential. Last season, they posted a plus-26 differential. The Canadiens scored only 209 goals, which ranks them 29th in the NHL, while surrendering 264 goals, the fifth-highest total in the league. Last se -

Opinion: Humboldt tragedy shows value of helicopter ambulances
Like all Canadians, North Americans and many others around the world, I deeply sense the grief related to the recent tragedy in Saskatchewan. It is particularly poignant to me, as I have lived the team bus experience while playing amateur hockey in Saskatchewan, the province of my birth.
This horrendous accident occurred in a rural agricultural community, on a clear day, with the Humboldt Broncos team bus and the semi-trailer truck ending up in a snow-covered field. There were 29 young ath -

Social Notes: Batshaw Centres Foundation’s canapés for the cause
Noties, we might not have the same population as NYC, but I’d bet major accessory dollars that on a per capita basis, we’re pretty competitive when it comes to the number of events per year. The sheer volume of events that take our party city by storm each social season renders it virtually impossible to cover them all in a calendar year, leading to the sad eventuality that some amazing, inspiring fundraisers get lost in the mix — until, of course, the next year, when we can tu -
Fariha Naqvi-Mohamed: Jersey Day is one more way to support Humboldt
As a hockey mom, I am among the Canadians across the country who have been consumed by news of the Humboldt Broncos tragedy. This hit our nation where it hurts, with our children and in our hockey-loving hearts. While thousands of kilometres may separate us, when it comes to our children and our love of hockey, our hearts beat as one.
Here in Montreal, many local elementary and high schools will join others across the nation in participating in Jersey Day this Thursday, April 12. It’s the -
