Fire at the Willow Inn in Hudson causes only minor damage
A dulcet spring at the Willow Inn in Hudson was briefly interrupted when a fire broke out in a ventilation duct, March 29.

Protesters denounce changes to Quebec's welfare program
Anti-poverty groups staged a demonstration on Tuesday against changes to Quebec’s welfare program that will require new recipients to participate in employment training.
The program, called Objectif emploi, aims to help people find work by undergoing job training, learning how to find work and developing social skills. The program took affect on April 1.
But anti-poverty groups say the new law will cut up to $224 from their $648 monthly income if they fail to participate in the -
Opinion: Quebec labour standards bill threatens to undermine businesses
A law is judged by its effects, not the legislator’s intentions, regardless of how laudable they may seem. Bill 176, “An Act to amend the Act respecting labour standards and other legislative provisions mainly in order to facilitate family-work balance,” introduced last month in the National Assembly, is a case in point.
This bill threatens to undermine the competitiveness and viability of many businesses in Quebec. The government seems to be failing to take into account compar -

Six O'Clock Solution: Pecans serve as Parmesan in vegan kale salad
Kale, the fashionable greenery, can make interesting, crunchy salads. This one from Angela Liddon’s new cookbook, Oh She Glows Every Day (Penguin, $32), has a lemon-garlic dressing that the author claims softens the kale, plus a pecan topping. Serve it with a soup or a combination of roasted vegetables and chickpeas, she suggests. She calls her topping Toasted Pecan Parmesan, although no Parmesan cheese is included.
