Montreal wants refund after report on garbage contracts shows double-dipping
Montreal Mayor Valérie Plante said she’s going to try to get back money the city’s inspector general said was illicitly taken from Montrealers by a garbage contractor.
“It’s unacceptable that Montrealers pay for garbage that came from other cities,” Plante said. “If there is a way to recuperate money that Montrealers paid for services they didn’t get, we’ll do that.”
A report from Denis Gallant found a company paid by the weight of gar -
Anthony Calvillo hopes to rekindle his coaching fire with Argonauts
After 16 years as the Alouettes’ franchise quarterback, followed by three more as an assistant coach, perhaps it’s sacrilegious seeing Anthony Calvillo in Toronto Argonauts’ blue.
But this was a move Calvillo had to make, for peace of mind and his future in the coaching profession. And don’t blame him for taking the carrot when it was dangled after he said he was going to take a year’s sabbatical. Had Toronto head coach Marc Trestman not come calling, down a body fo -

Allison Hanes: Time to wake up and smell the garbage problem
Montreal’s integrity watchdog has detected the whiff of corruption emanating from a contract for garbage collection in the borough of Verdun.
If the possibility of fraud wasn’t alarming enough, the investigation by the Bureau de l’inspecteur général (BIG) has also uncovered a larger and equally worrisome problem: The city doesn’t have a good-enough handle on what’s happening to all the waste being picked up from its streets. And that lack of scrut -

Montreal Impact sign Uruguayan midfielder Alejandro Silva
The Montreal Impact boosted their attack with the acquisition of Uruguayan midfielder Alejandro Silva on Monday and are expected to make at least one more signing soon.

Spring starts Tuesday, but winter will have some parting shots
February’s spring tease was just that, the Weather Network says. There are chilly days ahead for most of Quebec in the early spring, coupled with a higher-than-usual threat of winter storms.
Those storms will bring above-normal amounts of precipitation across Eastern Canada, but the extended thaw in late winter means much of the snow in the south of Quebec has already melted, reducing the possibility of severe flooding. The Weather Network expects March to be colder than normal in Quebec, -
