QUEBEC — Premier Philippe Couillard has refused to apologize for or distance himself from his finance minister, Carlos Leitão, who this week accused the opposition Coalition Avenir Québec of preaching ethnic nationalism.
Couillard instead turned the issue on its head, calling on the CAQ leader to answer two key questions when it comes to immigration.
How can François Legault justify allowing fewer immigrants given Quebec’s chronic labour shortage and how exa

A Superior Court judge will decide next month whether the delay a former SNC-Lavalin executive has experienced while awaiting a trial, on charges alleging he committed fraud in deals made with the Libyan government, is unreasonable.

Quebec hands housing power, funding to Montreal
Quebec announced Friday that it is handing all provincial housing powers to Montreal, giving the city autonomy over how to spend hundreds of millions of dollars over the next five years.
The money is used to build social and community housing for low-income households and for people with special needs; renovate housing in rundown areas; and adapt housing for people with disabilities.
For this year, Quebec will transfer $94 million to Montreal. The amount is expected to grow annually over the cou -

Stu Cowan: As speed returns, Habs' Alex Galchenyuk regains his rhythm
You have to wonder what kind of player Alex Galchenyuk would be today — and what position he’d be playing — if he hadn’t had a knee-on-knee collision with the Kings’ Anze Kopitar during a game in Los Angeles on Dec. 4, 2016.
Galchenyuk was leading the Canadiens in scoring at the time with 9-14-23 totals in 25 games while playing centre on the No. 1 line between Max Pacioretty and Alexander Radulov. Galchenyuk missed 18 games with an injured right knee before returni -
Canadiens at Maple Leafs: Five things you should know
Here are five things you should know about the Canadiens-Maple Leafs game at Air Canada Centre on Saturday (7 p.m., CBC, SN, TVA Sports, TSN 690 Radio):
The matchup: The oldest rivalry in the NHL has lost some of its lustre this season because the Leafs are good and the Canadiens are very bad. This is the third of four meetings between these teams and Toronto won the first two games at the Bell Centre. The Leafs needed overtime to win 4-3 on Oct. 14 and romped to a 6-0 win on Nov. 18.  -

Seized cash returned to Laval's recently paroled former director general

Canadiens' Carey Price hoping to play again this season
Twice this season, Canadiens goalies have been visibly dazed after taking hard slapshots off the mask. Both times, the Canadiens’ training staff allowed them to stay in the game and both times concussions were later diagnosed.

Under $16
The Pirate Of Cocoa Hill 2015, Dornier, South Africa red, $15.50, SAQ #10679361. Smooth and supple, loaded with red fruits and a subtle smoky note in the background. Tannins grip on the finish, but otherwise are soft enough to not get in the way of the wine. Very easy drinking, but with some substance. Grape varieties: syrah, merlot, cabernet franc, tempranillo. Residual sugar: 4 g/l. -

Best red wine for a date? West Island show may help you decide
I get asked lots of questions about wine. The best one recently was on Valentine’s Day. I was working the floor as a sommelier and while his date left the table, a patron asked me for a wine that “oozed sensuality.”
Go figure: he talks just like me. He wanted red, so we went through the main grapes.
It’s definitely not cabernet sauvignon. It’s too rigid, too tannic and lacks intrigue. They all kind of smell the same, and in the game of “wooing,” what kin -

Why mixing alcohol, sugar and caffeine can be a bad idea
“Is it OK to mix Red Bull with alcohol?” one of my students asked. The question was prompted by the recent tragic story of a teenager who died after reportedly consuming a beverage with the repugnant name FCKD UP, described as a “caffeinated, high-alcohol, high-sugar drink.” Many accounts focused on the enhanced inebriation potential of such beverages because of the caffeine and sugar content.
Alcohol is a central nervous system depressant, while caffeine is a stimulant. -
Don Macpherson: Leitão is right about divisiveness in Quebec politics
It’s easy to dismiss Finance Minister Carlos Leitão’s attack this week on the “ethnic-based” nationalism of the Coalition Avenir Québec party as a sign of desperation on the part of a Liberal government threatened with defeat in this year’s election.
When Leitão gave up a comfortable living as a respected economist to enter active politics four years ago, he said it was to oppose the divisiveness represented by the former Parti Québ&eacut -

Back by popular demand: baby boomer superstars
“If you think Mick Jagger will be out there trying to be a rock star at age 50, you are sadly, sadly mistaken.”
That line from rock ’n’ roll movie Almost Famous got a few chuckles when it came out in the year 2000. Well, it’s 2018 and Mick Jagger is still touring with the Rolling Stones, with seemingly no end in sight.
In the 1960s and ’70s, it wasn’t common to wonder what the music acts of the day would be doing 40 or 50 years down the line, but an asto -
