Medical specialists are far from greedy when it comes to their remuneration, says the Fédération des médecins spécialistes (FMSQ). And in fact they made a number of concessions in the contract they just signed with Quebec.
That was the message the FMSQ wanted to get across Thursday at a news conference in Montreal after several days of silence.
President Diane Francoeur and her team did not deny the numbers — an increase of $2 billion by 2023 and $480 million re

Quebecor out of the running for Just for Laughs, comedy fest says
Quebecor has dropped out of the race to purchase Montreal-based Just for Laughs comedy festival, Groupe Juste pour rire confirmed in a statement Thursday.
That means the owners of the entertainment juggernaut will most likely be from outside of Quebec and Canada. However, no deal has yet been finalized with U.S. entertainment conglomerate ICM Partners, which is expected to be the new owner when the paperwork is completed.
In the statement, Groupe Juste pour rire stated that, “Quebecor Medi -
Six-month recovery normal for Shea Weber's injury, specialist says
Canadiens defenceman Shea Weber had surgery Tuesday in Green Bay, Wisc., with the team announcing only that it was “to repair an injury to tendons in his left foot.”

Theatre: TNM takes up the challenge of Dostoyevsky's The Idiot
Long considered one of the most formidable, if not forbidding, of the great novelists, Fyodor Dostoyevsky has been getting more Montreal stage time than all his 19th-century peers put together over the last few years.
In 2016, The Gambler played Théâtre Prospero’s mainstage at the same time as Notes From Underground hunkered down in its basement studio theatre. In the same year, Hudson Village Theatre played host to a slapstick adaptation of the Russian maestro’s early a -
Liveblog: Pittsburgh at Canadiens
Bell Centre fans are in for a treat Thursday night: They’ll get to watch the world’s greatest hockey player.
And I don’t mean Jacob De La Rose.
Sidney Crosby and the Pittsburgh Penguins are in snowy Montreal,
It’s an absurdly belated first game this season between the Cup contender and the draft lottery aspirant.
And it should be a good one.
As evidenced by last Saturday’s Shootout loss in Tampa, the Canadiens can play well against fast, skilled teams.

Man gets prison term, probation for threats evoking Polytechnique massacre
A man who harassed and threatened women online for their opinions was sentenced to a four-month prison term at the Montreal courthouse on Thursday.
Alexandre Chebeir, 24, used photos of Marc Lépine, who killed 14 women in 1989 during a shooting rampage inside the École Polytechnique, and the hashtag #JeSuisMarc in his messages in 2016. Besides the prison term, Chebeir was also sentenced to three years of supervised probation.

Telefilm's outgoing executive director has been an agent of change
It’s like a cliché out of a bad movie. In the early 1990s, when Carolle Brabant was an auditor at Telefilm Canada, she visited a Vancouver production company that was, shall we say, less than enthusiastic about her visit.
“It was winter, January,” Telefilm’s executive director recalled on Monday afternoon, sitting in the Old Montreal office that would be hers for just 48 hours more. “They put me in a room with a broken window. So the wind was coming in. I had -

A breathalyzer, a belch and the Supreme Court of Canada
The Supreme Court of Canada will hear an unusual case from Quebec to determine the necessary conditions under which a breathalyzer test can be conducted — and whether a belch can throw that process into doubt.
The case involves a suspected drunk driver who was not placed under the required 20 minutes of surveillance before the test was administered.
Marc Cyr-Langlois was arrested in July 2012 and was taken to a police station, where he was left alone for a period of time.

Weekend traffic update: come downtown, but don't drive
Montrealers are invited to come out in great numbers to attend the St. Patrick’s Day parade on Sunday but are being warned to leave their cars at home.
Major traffic closures will make it difficult to navigate several highways around the city this weekend because of work on the Turcot Interchange and the new Champlain Bridge.
The closure of the Ville-Marie Expressway will make it difficult to go to and from downtown, and street closures on Sunday because of the parade will add to the mess. -

QUEBEC — The hot-button issue of ethnic nationalism has roared to life in the National Assembly.
The opposition Coalition Avenir Québec presented a motion Thursday asking the legislature to state that no political party advocates ethnic nationalism.

Fariha Naqvi-Mohamed: Allow flood victims to dip into their RRSPs
As much of a nightmare as the floods of 2017 were to live through, the ongoing horror that some survivors are still experiencing is arguably worse. Almost an entire year after the floods that ravaged Pierrefonds, Rigaud, Gatineau and other communities in the western part of Quebec, some families remain in hotel rooms, living with relatives or relying on aid. They are exhausted in every sense of the word. All they want now is their home.

Group claims responsibility for Queen Victoria vandalism
A group calling itself the Delhi-Dublin Anti-Colonial Solidarity Brigade is claiming responsibility for the defacing overnight Thursday of two Montreal monuments to Queen Victoria.

Opinion: Those leprechauns don’t tell the whole story
As the St. Patrick’s parade makes its way along de Maisonneuve Blvd. and green beer flows in Montreal’s pubs, you may be tempted to think that it’s great fun to be Irish. But is it? Believe me, those happy-go-lucky leprechauns don’t tell the whole story. The fact is, being Irish is a complicated business.
To begin with, St. Pat himself wasn’t Irish. In fact, the consensus among scholars is that he was Welsh. His remains are buried in Northern Ireland, which, like Wa -
Checking In: At YOTEL Boston, the future is now
I have seen the future of hotels and it looks a lot like YOTEL Boston.
The avant-garde YOTEL calls its genre “micro-luxury.” The brand’s idea is to be an affordable getaway in a major metropolis. Since YOTEL is a relatively new concept, it follows that it also is high-tech and high-design.
British businessman Simon Woodroffe launched his vision in the early 2000s. He had enjoyed a first-class airline flight so much that he built a hotel brand around that sort of minimalist comf -

Have you ever wondered what it would be like to live on the streets?
Every year, Concordia commerce students go beyond that mental exercise and actually sleep on the pavement outside the university’s Hall Building.
