This is Ontario's cannabis store logo. Surely Quebec's won't be worse
As the the target date for legalization in Canada approaches, provinces are getting into the nitty gritty of actually selling cannabis.
A small but important part of that equation is figuring out what the branding for cannabis stores will look like.
On Friday, Ontario announced that its stores will use the imaginative “Ontario Cannabis Store” name, and the logo for the retailer will be the “OCS” in a circle.
The Ontario Cannabis Store logo
Yawn.

The Right Chemistry: Early heroes in the battle to debunk mediums and fraudsters
The audience was sparse for the performance at the Bold Street Theatre in Liverpool that day in 1865. That was a disappointment for John Nevil Maskelyne and George Alfred Cooke, who had high hopes of becoming famous performers after their exposé of the trickery of the Davenport brothers a few months earlier in Cheltenham.
William and Ira Davenport had come to England riding a wave of publicity from America about their amazing ability to contact the spirit world. The brothers would se -

Couillard mulls a review of how Quebec doctors are paid
Quebec Premier Philippe Couillard called into question Friday the manner in which the province pays its physicians, a system in which medical federations administer the payrolls of their memberships.
At the moment, a total payroll sum is granted by the province to the federation of general practitioners and the federation of medical specialists, which decide on their own how the monies will be distributed. Couillard told reporters during his last day of a trade mission to France that it was &ldq -
New column: Royal Orr asks us to pardon his French
“Pardon my French” — it’s a common phrase with an interesting history, but its literal meaning expresses how I often feel about the way I speak my second language.
Non-francophones like me who have decided to make Quebec their home inevitably have to make peace with the French language. Well, OK — I’ve been attacked by enough “angryphones” in my life to know that “peace” may be too strong a word here. But at the very least, you have to -
Don Macpherson: Liberals edge toward the lifeboats
This may come as a surprise to the 44 per cent of non-francophones who told the Léger polling firm last week that they still expect (hope?) the Liberals will win this year’s Quebec election. But Liberals themselves seem less confident.
On Tuesday, a Liberal candidate nominated only last November in Iberville riding south of Montreal pulled out after realizing, he said, that he’d rather be chair of his school board than a member of the National Assembly. Not that he appeared to -

Under $16
Campo de Borja 2016, Seleccion, Borsao, Spain white, $12.55, SAQ # 10856161. This vintage has so much pear, from the flowers right down to the skin, with a spicy, bitter note on the finish. A textured white wine that is best served on the warmer side to take advantage of the richness. Grape varieties: macabeo, chardonnay. Residual sugar: 1.7 g/L. Serve at: 10-12 C. D -
Bill Zacharkiw: Californian complexity starts with zinfandel
I was recently asked about my favourite California red. I had a feeling I was being goaded into an argument, because the person who asked is a longtime reader of this column, loves California cabernet and brought up a 2016 interview I did with Le Vin Papillon owner/sommelier Vanya Filipovic. I received a number of angry letters regarding Filipovic’s decision to not put cabs on any of her wine lists.
Like Filipovic, I don’t really drink cabernet sauvignon, from anywhere. In -

Montreal unemployment rate up slightly from January, down from a year ago
The unemployment rate in the Montreal region rose from 6.1 per cent in January to 6.4 per cent in February, Statistics Canada said on Friday.
The rate, which is seasonally adjusted, was down 0.5 per cent from 6.9 per cent in February 2017.
This is the lowest February unemployment rate since statistics using the same geographic boundaries started being recorded in 2001.
The increase in unemployment comes as the region shed more than 10,000 jobs, according to the federal statistics agency.

Al Harrington was digging through a bag of turkey sandwiches when the fight broke out.
Like so many of the disputes that erupt on the streets of Montreal, its origins were unclear. It could have been a simple exchange of insults that snowballed, an old score that needed settling or perhaps just a textbook case of revenge.
Regardless of how it began, one woman was intent on keeping it alive. She lunged at a middle-age man, swinging a wild right hook toward his face. The punch glanced his ar -
