Stu Cowan: Habs ironman Karl Alzner focuses on mental side of blue line
Defenceman Karl Alzner played in his 600th consecutive NHL regular-season game Thursday night when the Canadiens beat the New York Rangers 3-1 at the Bell Centre.
If Alzner doesn’t miss any games for the remainder of his contract with the Canadiens, he will reach 950 consecutive games, which would leave him 14 behind the NHL ironman record set by former Canadiens forward Doug Jarvis.
The thought of Alzner playing 350 more games in bleu-blanc-rouge probably scares a lot of Canadiens fans in -
Creditors demand $32.4 million but Montreal Formula E has few assets
Montréal c’est électrique’s creditors say they are owed $32.4 million, but the organizer of last year’s ill-fated Formula E electric car race left assets of no more than $462,000.
The non-profit organization, set up by the city of Montreal, closed shop this month after Mayor Valérie Plante cancelled plans to hold races in 2018 and 2019. She described Formula E, a pet project of former mayor Denis Coderre, as a “financial -

Update: Atwater market reopens after overnight fire
The Atwater market reopened Friday morning after a brief closing caused by an overnight fire.
It was market employees who alerted authorities to the fire at about 3:30 a.m. The Montreal fire department said it seems the flames took hold in the wooden stalls inside the market and then spread to the building itself.
Material damage is estimated at $50,000. No one was injured in the incident.
There is no evidence thus far to suggest the fire was deliberately set. The possibility it may have been sp -

Kathleen Weil: Enhancing the vitality of the anglophone community
Last spring Premier Philippe Couillard, on a tour to the Gaspé, met with English-speaking community leaders. It was an eye-opener for the premier. He learned first-hand of the challenges the local English-speaking community, from access to health care, to youth retention, to low representation in the civil service and to the challenges of poverty and unemployment in the region. This led to a rethinking of how the Quebec government can better meet the needs of English-speaking Quebecers.

Canada's Olympians are singing Céline Dion and our hearts won't go on
Pack it up folks, we have reached peak Canada and there’s really no point in trying to outdo this.
The story here, such as it is, involves a group of Team Canada athletes on a bus doing the only right and natural thing: Belting Céline Dion’s smash hit “My Heart Will Go On.”
They may lack Céline’s melisma, but they more than make up for it with enthusiasm.

The Right Chemistry: Cracking a nut conundrum
The question took me by surprise. “Do you really have to activate your nuts?” Just as a plethora of strange mental images began to bubble through my mind, I learned that we were talking about tree nuts.
