Montreal cops stay frosty ahead of the polar bear plunge in Lachine
It’s almost too good to be true.
Not only will dozens of police officers and other do-gooders jump into the frigid waters of the Lachine Canal on Saturday, some of them will even do it in costume. Hopefully no one will get cold feet in the face of the challenge.
Beyond the polar bear plunge, there will be family-friendly entertainment, plus food kiosks, and even a prize for the best costume.
The challenge is organized by the Law Enforcement Torch Run, a global Special Olympics f -

What the Puck: Habs unlikely to make splash ahead of trade deadline
I am already fatigued by all the NHL trade-deadline speculation.
Enough already. It’s always a letdown because there are far fewer blockbuster deals than expected and we end up spending way too much time watching those oh-so-serious sports-network shows with star “experts” talking much ado about nothing.
Part of the reason I’m less than thrilled by the trade gossip is the fact that I firmly believe the Canadiens aren’t going to do anything exciting before the Feb. 2 -

Why the opening of Black Panther is such a major event
Marvel’s Black Panther is a big deal.
This is most obviously the case at the box office, where it is expected to challenge records for February releases.
More importantly, though, the movie is a big deal to black filmgoers who wish to see a wider range of black experiences and characters in theatres.
Many community organizations, including black student groups at McGill and Concordia universities, have organized screenings of the film on its opening weekend.

Pit bulls: Montreal's new dog bylaw will be 'balanced', Plante says
Mayor Valérie Plante says public consultations will help the city come up with an animal-control bylaw that protects Montrealers without targeting pit bull-type dogs.
“We saw that with the previous administration when they decided to do the bylaw (in 2016), a lot of people felt left out and not consulted,” Plante told the Montreal Gazette Friday after the city announced it will consult the public in February and March.
“There’s a lot of research and studi -
Oh hi, Marc: ESPN names Habs GM Bergevin 'Disaster Artist'
Your scrolling finger will have to be in excellent shape if you’re looking to find Marc Bergevin in ESPN’s ranking of NHL general managers.

Defence at Contrecoeur trial blames 'media storm' for UPAC probe
There may have been an “accumulation of irregularities,” but there was no fraud in the sale of the city-owned Faubourg Contrecoeur, a lawyer representing Frank Zampino, the former no. 2 politician at Montreal city hall, said in closing arguments at his trial on Friday.
Zampino’s lawyer, Isabel Schurman, and Pierre L’Écuyer, who is defending co-accused businessman Paolo Catania and who also presented final arguments, maintained that the investigation by Quebec -
NHL's worst team also trounced Habs on Twitter
Not content with bludgeoning the Habs on the ice, which they very much did on Thursday night, the Arizona Coyotes took to Twitter and rubbed a bit more salt in the wounds.
It would be depressing enough if just any team did that after a 5-2 win, but the Coyotes are also the worst team in the NHL. (Before you say it: Yes, there is actually a team doing worse than the Habs this year. At least thus far.)
All of which is to say that the Coyotes tweeted out footage of their fifth goal with the caption -
Editorial: City should listen to opponents of Mount Royal traffic plan
It seems it might be easier to move mountains than to move Luc Ferrandez away from his plan to prevent cars from crossing Mount Royal from one side to the other. His announcement earlier this month elicited a groundswell of outraged opposition, which continues. But based on his reported comments in recent days, it seems clear that the mind of the executive committee member responsible for large parks is made up.
In a flood of letters to the editor and elsewhere, citizens have raised any nu -

Don Macpherson: Anglos' supposed new political influence is an illusion
Recently, a reader describing himself as an anglophone “former Liberal supporter from Côte-St-Luc” emailed to tell me why he won’t be voting Liberal in this year’s Quebec general election.

What he didn’t say, however, is how he’d take out his anger on the -

Both the Turcot and Champlain Bridge projects will disrupt traffic on several main routes this Feb. 16-18 weekend.

Everything's on the table at the Montréal en lumière festival
In late 1999, details of a new festival sounded too good to be true.
It would be called Montréal en lumière, and there would be a performing-arts and museum component, as well as a lighting-arts component. But the table-arts component, with tasting events, seminars and especially guest chef dinners, is what grabbed local food lovers. Within hours of the festival’s unveiling, they were scrambling to get tables at what sounded like the most exciting event to happen on the Montr -

About last night…Canadiens lose 5-2 in Arizona
In terms of total points, the Arizona Coyotes are the worst team in the National Hockey League.
In terms of what we watched Thursday night, the Canadiens could wrest away that dubious distinction.
How bad are they?
No team in the league has lost twice to Arizona this season … except the Montreal Canadiens.
The optimists out there – all four of them, sharing a cab ride home from the brasserie after watching the game – will point to the total domination the Canadiens exercised o -
