Like thousands of other First Nations people across Canada, Sedalia Kawennotas was angry, hurt and disappointed by the acquittal on Friday of a Saskatchewan farmer who fatally shot an Indigenous man who was on his property.
On Monday, Kawennotas testified at a public inquiry into the mistreatment of Quebec’s Indigenous population by government institutions, such as the police and justice system, over the past 15 years.

Canadiens' Phillip Danault has Lady Luck to thank for quick recovery
It was a scary sight at the Bell Centre on Jan. 13 when Phillip Danault took a slapshot from the Boston Bruins’ Zdeno Chara in the head and was taken off the ice on a gurney.
Danault hasn’t played since because of what the team called “concussion-like symptoms” but was back practising with his teammates for the first time Monday morning in Brossard. Danault said he never lost consciousness after taking Chara’s slapshot off the right side of his helmet late in the se -
Canadiens Notebook: Team hits the road with NHL trade deadline looming
The Canadiens practised Monday morning in Brossard before heading to the airport for a flight to Colorado, where they will play the Avalanche Wednesday night (9:30 p.m., TSN2, RDS, TSN Radio 690). It will be the first of four straight road games with other stops in Arizona, Las Vegas and Philadelphia. The Canadiens don’t play again at the Bell Centre until Feb. 22, when the New York Rangers will be the visitors.
There’s no doubt the Feb. 26 NHL trade deadline will be on the mind -

Alouettes GM Kavis Reed sets sights upgrading defence as CFL free agency begins
Like any general manager, Kavis Reed is wearing his best poker face before Canadian Football League free agency begins Tuesday at noon.
Don’t expect Reed to predict whether the Alouettes will sign only one or two free agents or whether the team, which seemingly has many holes to fill, will be more active than usual.

Allison Hanes: What kind of health system harms its caregivers?
Anyone who has spent time in a hospital has benefited from the care of a nurse.
They are the ones who greet you in triage when you arrive at the emergency room, the ones who offer comfort during labour pains, the ones who monitor your vital signs after surgery, the ones who administer the medications that fight infection, the ones who answer your call when you need help in the middle of the night.
Nurses usually don’t get much glory or credit. Yet their often thankless work is the backbone -
Celine Cooper: Let's ensure age-friendly Montreal is inclusive
How do we make Montreal an age-friendly city for everyone?
The Plante administration recently announced that it will hold public consultations on its new Municipal Action Plan for Seniors 2018-2020. Why is Quebec airlifting sick kids without their parents?
Every week, gravely ill kids from remote parts of Quebec are airlifted to hospitals on the province’s medical evacuation jet.
