BURLINGTON, Vt. — A Montreal man has admitted to smuggling handguns from the United States into Canada, including some that were left in a library that straddles the border of Vermont and Quebec.
Authorities say 40-year-old Alexis Vlachos, of Montreal, pleaded guilty Monday in federal court in Burlington. He could be sentenced to 20 years in prison.
Court documents say that between 2010 and 2011, Vlachos worked with others to get about 100 handguns purchased from dealers in Florida into Ca

Increase in asylum seekers at border in December as 2017 sets record for claims
OTTAWA — December brought a rise in the number of asylum seekers apprehended between formal entry points at the Canada-U.S. border.
New figures from the federal government show 1,978 people were stopped by the RCMP, up from 1,623 the month before.

A 22-year-old woman has seen her medical condition upgraded to stable from critical after being the victim of a savage beating on Ste-Catherine St. early Monday.
The incident occurred at 2 a.m. near Amherst St. Police responded to 911 calls that a man was beating a woman on the street, witnesses telling investigators he continued to strike her even as she was on the ground.

APA seeks class action suit against Kia over alleged engine defect
The Automobile Protection Association (APA) has filed a request in Quebec Superior Court seeking autorization to launch a class action suit on behalf of owners of Kia Forte automobiles equipped with a two-litre engine.
