Reduce the residential tax hike or we'll vote against Montreal's budget: opposition
The opposition party at Montreal city hall will vote against Mayor Valérie Plante’s first budget on Wednesday unless her party adopts an amendment that would reduce the residential tax rate by 1.1 per cent — an amount equivalent to the proposed water tax increase.
Lionel Perez, the leader of Ensemble Montréal, said his party opposes the budget as presented because Montrealers can’t afford the planned 3.3-per-cent average increase in residential taxes.

Chinese tourists spend nearly $200M in Quebec each year, ministry says
A growing number of Chinese are choosing to take their vacations in Quebec, and their spending in the province is closing in on $200 million annually, the Quebec tourism ministry says.
And the ministry is crediting that increase to the establishment of a direct flight between Montreal and Shanghai.
The number of tourists from China is also continuing to increase, rising from 83,000 in 2015 to 138,000 in 2016 and 170,000 last year.

Scores of Montreal firefighters were called in late Sunday and early Monday to battle a pair of fires that broke out in the city’s north end.

Two suspects sought in violent Terrebonne home invasion
Terrebonne police were combing the area around a residence on Pierre Le Gardeur St. Monday morning seeking clues in connection with a violent home invasion hours earlier.
