Lac-Mégantic verdict: Relief but also renewed call for rail detour
Like most of her citizens, Lac-Mégantic Mayor Julie Morin was not surprised Friday when a jury acquitted three former railway workers on criminal negligence charges in the 47 deaths that resulted when a runaway train carrying crude oil hurtled into the town’s downtown core and exploded in July 2013.

Shelter: Pied-à-terre love at first sight in Griffintown
Education is what brought Canan Çili’s son to Montreal, but she was the one who was charmed enough by the city to buy a condo in Griffintown.
A decade ago, Istanbul-based Çili knew practically nothing about Montreal. Things changed when the petite lady with a bubbly personality and her husband — a retired civil engineer who works as a consultant — were checking things out here for their son. He had decided to come here to pursue his education. And then Çili -

Winter biking in Montreal? No sweat
People who cycle all winter in Montreal have a name for themselves: “hurlus,” short for “hurluberlus.” French for “weirdo.”
Winter biking may have been a weirdos-only pursuit a decade ago, but from the look of our streets, either the weirdos are proliferating or winter biking is going mainstream. With the Plante administration’s prioritization of “active transportation,” the trend is likely to continue.
The popularity of Bixi might explain pa -

In the Habs' Room: 'I think we played extremely well tonight,' Julien says
WASHINGTON — Max Pacioretty said he couldn’t remember the last time an empty-net goal proved to be the game-winner.
But that was the case Friday as Pacioretty’s second goal of the night — and 14th of the season — was the margin of victory in the Canadiens’ 3-2 win over the Washington Capitals at Capital One Arena.
Pacioretty took advantage of a pass from Tomas Plekanec, but he said he hesitated for a moment before making a break.

About last night … Canadiens beat Caps 3-2
On the day he departed this vale of tears, you have to wonder what Red Fisher would make of this season’s Montreal Canadiens.
The Living Legend of Sports Journalism undoubtedly would have been impressed by the team’s effort in Washington.
They played a solid game against a tough opponent.
They got excellent goaltending from a guy who wouldn’t remind Red of Jacques Plante.
And there were contributions from everyone in a white jersey … even the beleaguered Captain, w -

In Lac-Mégantic, few expected a guilty verdict, or wanted one
LAC-MÉGANTIC — The mood at the cafés and bars in Lac-Mégantic Friday night was subdued, as the news began to sink in that the three railway employees who faced criminal charges in the rail disaster that killed 47 people here in July of 2013 had been found not guilty.
